The United States is expected to declare on Tuesday that it will provide Ukraine with an extra $150 million in essential ammunition, according to two American officials, as Russia levels accusations against Ukraine for utilizing US-supplied munitions to attack targets within Russia or Russian-controlled areas.
According to a report from AP, Russia called in the US ambassador on Monday to object to what it alleges was the deployment of advanced American-made missiles by Ukraine in an assault on Crimea on Sunday, which reportedly resulted in four deaths and over 150 injuries.
Nevertheless, the US Department of Defense said last week that Ukrainian forces are now permitted to employ longer-range missiles supplied by the United States to hit targets inside Russia if acting in self-defense. From the beginning of the conflict, the US had upheld a policy of not permitting Ukraine to use the weapons it provided to strike targets on Russian territory to avoid further escalating the war.
The ongoing supply of US ammunition, which will be sourced from current inventories, is meant to assist Ukrainian troops in repelling intensified Russian offensives.
The forthcoming delivery is anticipated to include ammunition for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems, or HIMARS. This system can launch the longer-range missiles from the Army Tactical Missile System, or ATACMS, which Russia has warned would trigger retaliation and risk escalating the conflict.
One of the US officials said they could not confirm whether this aid package contained ATACMS munitions, but stated that the aid did not include cluster munitions.
The officials spoke on the condition of anonymity to provide details that had not yet been made public.
In addition to anti-armor weapons, small arms, and grenades, the package also includes the highly sought-after 155 mm and 105 mm artillery rounds, among other support.
