- If
US President Joe Biden chooses to not continue his re-election campaign, Vice PresidentKamala Harris is the top choice to replace him, according to several sources, reported Reuters. - If Harris were to be named the party nominee, she would inherit the money raised by the Biden campaign as well as the campaign infrastructure, it added.
- She was also trailing only one percent behind Trump at 42% in a Reuters/Ipsos poll, meaning she was statistically just as strong as Biden.
- Furthermore, Reuters said that several
Democratic strategists believe that passing over the first Black and woman VP for another candidate would lead to a backlash from keyBlack and women voters .
- A wave of panic was set off among Democrats after Biden’s first debate with Republican Donald Trump, where the President was seen fumbling and speaking incoherently.
- There were concerns that he might not be fit enough to serve another term and there were calls for top aides to resign.
- But
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Biden just had a “bad night” and would continue on the path to reelection.
- Besides Harris, influential Democrats have also floated other names such as
Gavin Newsom from California, Gretchen Whitmer of Michigan and Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania, said Reuters. - But these sources also believed it would be near impossible to sidestep Harris.
- Several influential Democrats said Harris would not be able to defeat Trump, noted Reuters.
- The US had never elected a woman president and last year, many inside the White House worried she would be a liability for the campaign, it added.
- Although Harris managed to find her space when it came to the issue of
abortion rights , her polling didn’t improve by much.
