COP28 can't be just words.
We need a Net Zero Operating Model for 1.5 degrees
As we come out of the 28th COP conference, a milestone has been reached which should put us on a trajectory away from fossil fuels. These words are welcome. Now we need action otherwise they remain just words. We need the Net Zero operating model that takes us rapidly off fossil fuel dependency.
COP28 company-announced commitments to doubling energy efficiency and 3x renewables capacity will not be reached without this new operating model. It links our built environment (our homes, schools, offices and industrial sites) and their electrified heat and transportation with the smart networks and controls that are as critical a part of the infrastructure of the future energy system as ‘silver bullets’ like nuclear or hydrogen.
As digital energy and climate innovators, we collectively comprise a net zero operating model for real carbon performance that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels. This is the operating model built on rapidly accelerating data and information value chains that support the infrastructure financing, deployment and business models shifts required for electrification and decarbonisation of grids.
The business models that emerge over this smart operating model will deliver affordable energy, stable prices, resiliency and jobs that we desperately need now and for our children. Above all, they need to deliver a way to achieve 1.5 degrees or the stability, security and opportunities in shifting to a net zero world are not possible.
As innovators, our use cases build the evidence that this operating model is here to make fossil fuel dependency obsolete. We see these as the common principles we’re operating to…
The Net Zero Operating Model ‘Data First’ Principles:
Stopping climate change means reducing carbon emissions at source - in our businesses, communities and homes.
Transitioning legacy energy infrastructure must be done equitably and affordably.
Smart technology and electrification diffusion is required to outcompete fossil fuels, to keep pace with renewable generation
Real performance data as ground truth of climate impact is increasingly affordable and needs to be made more accessible
Smart technologies are ready to be deployed to support a new generation of net zero businesses if they are given a level playing field
