Jio to enter the cloud laptop segment – What are they and what to expect
  • Reliance Jio is reportedly working on a ‘cloud’ laptop for India.
  • The company is in talks with HP, Acer and Lenovo to manufacture this laptop.
  • The laptop will allow users to get access to powerful hardware and storage at an affordable price.
Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Jio is reportedly working on launching a ‘cloud’ laptop in India, with the aim of making a powerful laptop more accessible. Jio has already launched two affordable laptops in India, including the JioBook.

According to a report by Economic Times, Jio is working on launching a ‘cloud’ laptop in the country, aimed at reducing the ownership cost. The company is reportedly in talks with manufacturers such as HP, Acer and Lenovo to launch the laptop in the country.

What is a cloud laptop?

If you are confused about what a cloud laptop is, here’s everything you need know:

Jio will reportedly offer the laptop as a “dumb terminal”, which will just be enough to connect with the company’s JioCloud. This is where all the processing and storage will reportedly happen.

What this basically means is that you don’t have to get the latest processors and expensive storage to get the performance of a top end laptop. You can just buy the laptop from Jio, which will likely feature an entry-level chipset.

All the computing and storage will occur on the JioCloud and you will need an active internet connection to access this data, unlike traditional laptops where you can access files on your device without the need of an internet connection.

“The cost of a laptop depends on its hardware like memory, processing power, chipset etc. The greater capacity of these hardware increases costs as well as battery power. What we are doing is, we are stripping all this and the whole processing of the laptop will happen at the back end in the Jio cloud,” an official familiar with the matter told ET.

In addition to the cost of the laptop, the user will reportedly also be charged a monthly subscription fee to use this service. At the moment, there is no information about what the subscription plans will look like but we can expect multiple tiers, based on performance and storage capacity.

If you already have a desktop or a smart TV, you will reportedly be able to access this service, without having to purchase the laptop.
