NMC allows FMGs to enrol for internships in non-teaching hospitals pan India

The National Medical Commission (NMC) has released a circular allowing Foreign Medical Graduates (FMGs) to enrol for internships at non-teaching hospitals. This comes days after several All FMGs Association (AFA) members and Delhi Medical Council (DMC) requested NMC to absorb FMGs who did not receive seats in the medical colleges for their Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship due to non-availability.

The notice further reads, “Based on various representations received from Medical Councils and FMGs regarding facing difficulties in deployment of FMGs for an internship, it has now been decided to extend the above time period from May 2024 to May 2026 i.e. for two years.”

Earlier, in 2023, internship seats were increased to 587 seats in Delhi alone, after NMC allowed standalone postgraduate medical institutes imparting DNB training, and non-teaching hospitals to accommodate FMGs as interns.

As Education Times reported earlier, in April 2024, the DMC notified a college-wise distribution of seats available for internships in all the categories in various medical colleges in Delhi. The list revealed there are no seats available for the FMGs to undergo the CRMI at All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS), Maulana Azad Medical College, Army College of Medical Science, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Medical Sciences &RML Hospital. These medical colleges cited ‘administrative reasons’ behind the non-availability of internship opportunities for FMGs.
