Kunuku Hema Kumari, a 30-year-old Sarpanch (village head) from Pekeru village in Andhra Pradesh, is making waves on the global stage. This inspiring woman, who holds a Master's degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering, recently addressed the 57th Commission for Population and Development session at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
Kunuku's journey is remarkable. An engineer by profession, she has balanced lecturing with her role as Sarpanch, a testament to her dedication. Now, she's using her platform to advocate for women's empowerment, particularly in rural India.
At the UN, Kunuku stressed the importance of education and healthcare for women. She highlighted the global challenge of balancing childcare with careers, a hurdle that often hinders women's professional growth. "Mere talk on women empowerment will not help if there is no gender equality," she stated.
Her personal life reflects her commitment to these values. She credits her supportive husband and in-laws for enabling her to pursue her goals.
Back in Pekeru, Kunuku is actively working to improve the lives of her villagers. She prioritises women's literacy, believing it's the key to a more equitable society.
