Kunuku Hema Kumari, a 30-year-old Sarpanch (village head) from Pekeru village in Andhra Pradesh, is making waves on the global stage. This inspiring woman, who holds a Master's degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering, recently addressed the 57th Commission for Population and Development session at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.

Kunuku's journey is remarkable. An engineer by profession, she has balanced lecturing with her role as Sarpanch, a testament to her dedication. Now, she's using her platform to advocate for women's empowerment, particularly in rural India.

At the UN, Kunuku stressed the importance of education and healthcare for women. She highlighted the global challenge of balancing childcare with careers, a hurdle that often hinders women's professional growth. She emphasised that achieving gender equality is crucial for progress across all sectors.

"Mere talk on women empowerment will not help if there is no gender equality," she stated.

Her personal life reflects her commitment to these values. She credits her supportive husband and in-laws for enabling her to pursue her goals.

Back in Pekeru, Kunuku is actively working to improve the lives of her villagers. She prioritises women's literacy, believing it's the key to a more equitable society. Her days are filled with raising awareness about government schemes, monitoring schools and childcare centres, and ensuring access to necessities like healthcare, proper roads, and sanitation.

As Kunuku says, quoting Maya Angelou, "With strength as her armour and love as her guide, she conquers mountains, she crosses the tide." This young Sarpanch is undoubtedly an inspiration to women chasing their dreams and making a difference in their communities.
