At a time when the nation is witnessing a sudden increase in the number of electric vehicles (EV), minister of state for heavy industries Krishnan Pal Gurjar that the Union government had sanctioned 2,877 charging stations across the country.

Under phase-II of the faster adoption and manufacturing of electric vehicles (FAME) India scheme, 7.66 lakh EVs have been supported until December 19 this year, by way of demand incentive amounting to about 3,311 crore. “Out of 2,903 crore budget allocation for the year 2022-23 for the second phase-II of FAME India scheme, 1,128.45 crore have been utilised. Further, 6,315 e-buses were sanctioned to 65 cities and 2,877 charging stations were sanctioned in 68 cities across 25 states and Union territories.” said Gurjar in Rajya Sabha.

The information by the minister was given in response to the question posed by DMK MP P Wilson when he questioned about details of funds disbursed and allocated under phase-II of FAME India scheme and whether the ministry conducted any studies to see whether a switch to hybrid and electric technology in vehicles under the scheme would cause difficulties for motorists.

For the question on studies undertaken, Gurjar replied that there was no such study conducted by the ministry but they have recognized the difficulties faced by motorists in switching to hybrid and electric vehicles such as high upfront cost of electric vehicle as compared to conventional combustion engine vehicle, customer anxiety about range of EVs and the limited models of EVs available in India.
