Fossil may no longer launch Google's WearOS-powered smartwatches
Fossil launched its last WearOS-powered smartwatch, the Fossil Gen 6 in 2021. Since then, Google’s wearable operating system has become popular amongst smartwatches with the launch of newer versions like the WearOS 4. However, Fossil hasn’t made any major additions to its WearOS-based smartwatch lineup. Now, a recent report claims that the company may have given up entirely on the WearOS-based smartwatches.

According to a report by Android Police, multiple Reddit users have claimed that they have spoken to some Fossil retail employees. They have reportedly said that the company's Gen 7 Wear OS smartwatches may never come out.

The report cites another user claiming Fossil is waiting for Qualcomm to launch a new Wear OS chipset. However, the report didn’t confirm if Qualcomm is working on a new Wear OS platform. Fossil also hasn’t shared any official statement about this matter.

Fossil’s status for WearOS smartwatches
In November, Fossil rolled out the Wear OS 3.5 update for its Gen 6 wearables after a long delay. However, that firmware was criticised for being buggy and users also complained about poor battery life as well as performance issues.

However, the company later rolled out a minor update to address the reported problems. Yet, all the issues weren’t completely resolved.. The company also hasn’t clarified whether it will update its existing Gen 6 wearables to Wear OS 4. If the rumours are to be true, the latest Wear OS release may never be available for the Fossil Gen 6 watches.

Since the launch of Wear OS 3, Google has had a major partnership with Samsung. The company also launched its Pixel Watch 2 this year. Apart from these two companies, TicWatch is the other major player in the Wear OS category.

However, the smartwatch models offered by the company lack Google Assistant, which puts it at a disadvantage against offerings from Samsung and Google. Also, Mobvoi recently released its WearOS 3 models and hasn’t mentioned when Wear OS 4 will arrive for its watches.
