How did you first connect as a Board Member? "I went on a volunteer match, and the rest is history," BOSS Board Member Elaine Morgado. Elaine Morgado is a member of the BOSS Board of Directors. She was first introduced to the organization over thirty years ago when she served as staff (Job Developer) at BOSS’s Hayward shelter, South County Homeless Project (SCHP). 🚲✨ Celebrating Juneteenth with a Twist at Ursula Sherman Village! 🎉 The day was not just about honoring freedom and history, but also about embracing cycling freedom! Our participants dived into cycle safety workshops, learning everything from road safety tips to integrating bikes with public transport. 🚲🚴🏽♀️🚴🏽♂️ The highlight? Each participant received a bike, helmet, and lock, and together, they took their new wheels for a spin on the nearby trails. It was a day of community, fun, and empowerment. The recent Supreme Court decision allows cities to enforce bans on outdoor sleeping, a move that could significantly impact our homeless community, especially in light of the latest PIT data showing a slight decrease in overall homelessness but a significant portion still unsheltered in Alameda County. The latest PIT count shows a 3% decrease in homelessness in Alameda County from 2022, with 33% of our homeless population sheltered - yet two-thirds remain unsheltered, highlighting the urgency for accessible housing solutions. While this appears to be progress, the need for supportive services remains critical. As we digest these developments, it's crucial to push for policies that not only manage but also compassionately address the needs of the unhoused.
