Although LA has the largest number of homeless veterans in the US, veterans have struggled to find housing and shelter to meet their needs. A project is finally coming to fruition at a site in Brentwood that the VA has owned since 1887. Although gifted as a home for Civil War Veterans, the property has been used for a variety of completely unrelated purposes, including UCLA’s baseball stadium and a private K-12 school. At long last, housing for actual veterans is being built on the site 👍 🏠 👷♂️ 🚧 Read the NPR article below to see why veterans are cautiously optimistic, but still feel more could and should be done. https://lnkd.in/gjjKYa9F

Forging pathways to housing.
About us
From our pioneering start in 1993, Operation Dignity has grown to provide shelter and transitional or permanent housing to approximately 100 veterans and their families on a given night, and to be Alameda County’s largest provider of transitional housing to veterans. We operate three veteran housing communities in Oakland, Berkeley, and Alameda, each providing comprehensive on-site supportive services to help veterans escape the crisis of homelessness and regain stability and self-sufficiency. Since 2001, we have also partnered with the City of Oakland to provide street mobile outreach to people who are homeless and living in encampments, in parks, and in other areas not fit for habitation. In 2016, we expanded our street outreach to the City of Alameda as well. Our outreach team is in the field each weekday and serves more than 60 people on a given day.

Last week, in honor of Veterans Day, Wells Fargo volunteers hosted a workshop at House of Dignity. As part of our Employment program, they answered residents' questions and taught them about personal finance, the banking system, and more. Thanks to Wells Fargo for helping our veterans build financial security and independence! 🤝 👏 💵 We'd also like to personally thank the volunteers who shared their time and expertise: Anina Tweed (for organizing this), Melissa Landay, Gail Nakama, and Stephen Kantor 😀

While the number of homeless veterans in California has dropped by 30% in the last 12 years, California still has a third of the total homeless veteran population. That number has stagnated between 10,000 and 12,000 since 2014. Operation Dignity is working hard every day to tackle this persistent problem. With elections happening around the country, we'd like to bring a bill for next March's primary to your attention. "Proposition 1 ... includes $6.4 billion to fund projects for [veterans with] behavioral health issues and those at risk of homelessness. It also includes a proposal to adjust how the state spends money it collects for mental health services from a tax on personal income over $1 million, aiming to direct more of the funds to housing." Please spread the word about Proposition 1 we can get all of our homeless veterans housed! 🏡 https://lnkd.in/g6NHsach

On World Mental Health Day 2023, let’s take a moment to focus on the important issue of mental health among veterans. Veterans are overwhelmingly diagnosed with mood and anxiety disorders due to trauma as well as the impact of traumatic brain injuries and physical injuries that can result from their service. Although the incidence of PTSD varies greatly among different military specialties, overall, 21% to 29% of veterans involved in the Persian Gulf War, Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom are reporting experiencing PTSD after returning to civilian life. Additionally, suicide rates are much higher among veterans than the general population. So, if you haven’t hugged a veteran today or told them how much you love and appreciate them, don’t hesitate! 😊 🤗 See the information below for some amazing organizations where veterans and their families can get immediate, free help with mental health issues just by picking up the phone 📞 🏥 : · The VA’s Veterans Crisis Line, Dial 988, then press 1 or text 838255: Confidential support 24/7, 365 days a year to connect veterans in crisis and their families and friends with qualified, caring Department of Veterans Affairs responders through a confidential toll-free hotline, online chat, or text. https://lnkd.in/d_PNaU2 · Vets4Warriors, 1-855-838-8255, A 24/7 military peer support program staffed by veterans.
