Venture Capital and Private Equity Principals
All software should be open and everyone can become an entrepreneur.
About us
Open Core Ventures (OCV) is a venture capital firm that starts commercial open source software companies. Our team identifies open source software projects with traction, recruits passionate project founders and contributors, and launches new companies. OCV companies aim to create tangible value for the open source community by providing access to resources and reducing the barrier to entrepreneurship. OCV believes in the power of open core, and the impact of open learning and collaboration. Our approach diverges from conventional venture capital because OCV starts companies and recruits founders; OCV does not invest in existing companies. The OCV model enables experienced, capable, and technical founders who otherwise would not have the resources to launch a successful startup. OCV does not make investments in existing open core companies. OCV is not currently accepting new limited partners.

OCV is proud to announce the launch of our newest portfolio company, Grapes Studio Inc., a no-code editor built on the open-source framework GrapesJS. Led by GrapesJS creator, Artur Arseniev, Grapes Studio will build on the GrapesJS open-source core to create a SaaS application for the popular framework. In addition to Grapes Studio, Artur plans to build Studio SDK, an embeddable version of Grapes Studio. Both are multi-purpose editors that bring all web-related needs into a single interface from website creation to newsletters, invoicing, and more. https://lnkd.in/gfMjQmyP

We’re proud to welcome Lucenia to our portfolio of open charter companies! Led by Nicholas Knize, Ph.D., Lucenia is a search and analytics engine that unifies existing cloud and self-hosted environments. Unlike current monolithic search engines, Lucenia utilizes independent stateless micro-functions that can flexibly scale based on real-time demand. Using serverless and autoscaling features, Lucenia aims to make it easy for businesses to extract meaningful data and insights without overpaying in cloud costs. Built as a true autoscale-as-you-need platform and incorporated as a public benefit company, Lucenia plans to release the majority of its features under an open source license and charge customers primarily based on scaling needs. https://lnkd.in/gUF3MZBr

Fundraising puts founders in front of tons of investors who have heard hundreds, if not thousands, of company pitches. Ideally, a founder is talking with experienced partners who have invested in multiple successful companies and know a thing or two about how to build a successful startup. So when they give feedback on why they passed, it's intuitive to want to listen. But don’t. Take the no, and ignore the why. https://lnkd.in/gcxafKKP
Don’t listen to feedback from VCs who pass on investing

Early-stage open source startups have an advantage over non-open-source startups. Popular projects that grow quickly benefit from early product-market fit indications, a community of passionate people, and an existing user base to experiment with. A popular project will have growing usage indicating there’s a market need for the software, a core set of contributors who care deeply about improving the software, and an initial user base forming. Projects with these leading success indicators are in a great position to build a business and raise a seed round to start building commercial momentum. https://lnkd.in/gBHKbCnt

Startup founders are inclined to spend tons of money on in-person events when content marketing is a much more effective way to do early marketing.
In-person marketing events are overvalued
