English: This paper deals with the functionalisation of antiquity in the self-representation of modern Tunisia’s authoritarian presidents, Habib Bourguiba (1956–1987) and Zine el Abidine Ben Ali (1987–2011). On the basis of extensive evidence, which has not yet been the subject of synoptic study, this paper analyses the use made of the country’s ancient past by its authoritarian discourses of identity-formation. This research sheds light to the classical reception in public appearances, speeches, national commemoration days and programmes of Tunisian pavilions during world exhibitions. To comprehend the image of Tunisia projected in the time of these two presidents, one must explore the antiquity-based iconography of modern coins, banknotes, post stamps, architecture, and building programmes, which bear the explicit marks of Bourguiba or Ben Ali. Their self-positioning within Tunisia’s cultural heritage, their intervention in its cultural policy, and the interplay between the regime-controlled construction of national identity on the one hand and the country’s classical and ancient studies on the other were important aspects of the autocrats’ references to the state’s glorious past. This dialectic becomes obvious when analysing the two autocrats’ influence over education policy and curricula for history teaching. On the basis of this broad approach and by comparison with other authoritarian systems, it is not only possible to understand some mechanisms and developments in the appropriation of the ancient past by both rulers, but also to unpack significant components of Tunisia’s image abroad during their reigns.

Deutsch: Der Beitrag behandelt die Funktionalisierung der Antike in der Repräsentation der beiden tunesischen Präsidenten Habib Bourguiba (1956–1987) und Zine el Abidine Ben Ali (1987–2011). Anhand einer bemerkenswert reichen, bisher aber noch nicht synoptisch erfassten Befundlage wird diskutiert, welche Rolle der Antike bei autokratisch initiierten Identitätsdiskursen dieser Zeitspanne zukam. Untersucht werden Antikenrekurse im Rahmen öffentlicher Auftritte, Reden, nationaler Gedenktage sowie ihre Bedeutung in Programmen tunesischer Pavillons auf Weltausstellungen. Die Analyse antikisierender Ikonographie von zeitgenössischen Münzen, Geld-scheinen, Briefmarken, Architektur und Bauvorhaben, die einen klaren Konnex zu Bourguiba oder Ben Ali aufweisen, ist zentral für das Verständnis von Teilen des in diesen Jahren geschaffenen „Tunesienbildes“. Die Inszenierung der Autokraten im tunesischen Kulturerbe, ihre Eingriffe in die Kulturpolitik sowie die Wechselwirkungen zwischen autokratisch gesteuerter, nationaler Identitätsschaffung und tunesischer Altertumswissenschaft waren wichtige Aspekte ihres Bezuges auf eine glorreiche Geschichte. Dasselbe gilt für ihre Einflussnahme auf das nationale Bildungswesen und die Geschichtslehrpläne. Durch diesen breiten Ansatz und vereinzelte Vergleiche mit anderen autokratischen Systemen ist es möglich, einige Mechanismen und Entwicklungsstränge in der Antikerezeption beider Autokraten, aber auch in der Außendarstellung Tunesiens während ihrer Regierungszeiten aufzuzeigen.

Recent projects and publications have radically changed our knowledge about pre- and early Roman Numidia, but contextualization of the isolated evidence is still lacking. This article reviews the most relevant scientific studies of the new millennium in order to reflect on the issues they raise about the theoretical, terminological, and methodological approaches being currently taken in this field. Focussing on the prevailing fields of scientific investigation, this article seeks to provide new perspectives on the interpretation of the rich material evidence.

This article gives a first overview of the distribution of giallo antico in the Western Mediterranean during the earliest phases of its extraction. It discusses recently excavated, well-dated contexts from Italy, Spain, Gaul, Africa, and from Simitthus itself. The objective is not, as is usually the case, to focus on the marble’s use in spectacular buildings in Rome. The article will rather highlight the variability of the marble’s use in houses, sanctuaries, tombs, inscriptions and municipal buildings. In doing so, some options of naming the actors involved in the trade in the marble and possible trade routes will be discussed. As a result of this approach, it becomes clear that a wide range of private, municipal and provincial actors must have been involved in the marble trade, apart from the hitherto overestimated role of the Numidian kings and Roman emperors. The distribution-maps show the current state of a broader work in progress of the Tuniso-German project (INP/DAI) at Simitthus.

Cet article discute la nature problématique du modèle “continuité et ruptures” en Numidie depuis le IIe s. av. J.-C. jusqu’à la fin du Ier s. ap. J.-C. Grâce à l’augmentation récente des témoignages, les ruptures conventionnelles ne résultent guère compatibles aux chronologies désormais précisées concernant l’architecture, la céramique, la numismatique, les épitaphes etc. S’opposant aux modèles théoriques bipolaires qui dominent toujours le “discours identitaire” de cette époque fluide, l’auteur tente de mettre au point des nouvelles vues sur le riche dossier matériel et de souligner sa diversité aussi bien régionale que locale.

This paper analyzes the relation between the Numido-Mauretanian elites’ self-representation and various Mediterranean influences by discussing three theoretical models – ‘punicization’, ‘hellenization’ and ‘romanization’ – that keep recurring in scholarship on North Africa.
As elites constitute a catalyzing role in trans-cultural contacts, they particularly qualify as research objects in questions of acculturation. Numidian and Mauretanian aristocracies marked a special case of elites, as they incorporated heterogeneous external influences in their self-representation over a short time period. Archaeological evidence indicates that their self-image sensitively reacted to the Mediterranean world's changing power constellations. For instance, in 3rd and 2nd centuries BC the adoption of ‘Punic’ and ‘Hellenistic’ norms can be noticed in their architecture, coinage, sculpture, foreign and economic policy. From the 1st century BC onwards, they supplemented these modes of expression with Roman elements while carefully preserving local traditions.
Theories of ‘punicization’, ‘hellenization’ and ‘romanization’ often are cited in this context. However, they are problematic, since they ignore broad cultural alterations in such domains as language and religion. Furthermore, the misleading view that ethnical identity can be differentiated by ‘typical’ material, is still prevailing. Therefore, the relation of external influences and pre-existing cultural paradigms was usually presented as competing antagonism.
I maintain that these phenomena are more accurately described by ‘compatible actualization’, which was rendered possible by the elite’s intensive exchanges with Mediterranean-wide networks. The rapid and fundamental change of the Numido-Mauretanian elites’ self-image documents their high adaptability and far-reaching comprehension for current trends. Thus ‘compatible actualization’ tells us much about North Africa’s generally under-studied integration in pan-Mediterranean norms.

This paper examines Numidian and Mauretanian elites, highlighting their concepts of representation and visual memorialization under changing political conditions in pre-Roman North Africa between 3rd century BC and 1st century AD.
Archaeological evidence indicates that the Numidian kingdom’s elite, which displaced Carthage’s North African hegemony following the battle of Zama in 202 BC, had a complex self-image that derived from ‘hellenistic’ norms of aristocratic behavior. The latter were ruler cult, coins and reliefs showing idealistic portraiture and tombs or victory monuments exposing activity-related architectural decor and symbols. The same media, paradoxically, memorized traditional local elements of culture. The result was a highly heterogeneous conglomeration of motifs joined together by their creators’ perception of what constituted the ‘current fashion’. The interplay between individual representation and collective memorialization is well documented by buildings erected in particular moments and places of Numidian history.
As Rome expanded into Africa from the 1st century BC onwards, the aristocracy’s self-representation changed. An increasing ‘romanization’ can already be noticed in late Numido-Mauretanian kingdoms. Following Augustus’ transplantation of the Numidian dynasty into Mauretania as a client state, ruler portraits emulated Augustan prototypes, cities imitated latest Roman urbanism and royal coinage reproducted imperial one. Due to the deliberate preservation of above-mentioned forms of self-representation these updates gave the elite’s image an extremely hybrid appearence.
In sum, contrary to colonial and postcolonial researchers’ claims that bipolar cultural rivalries played the crucial role in both cases, I maintain that they should be interpreted as compatible union of established structures and innovative trends.

Gegenwärtig erlebt die arabische Welt eine Welle des Aufruhrs. Vom Jemen bis nach Marokko protestieren die Bevölkerungen gegen autoritäre Regime. Dabei schien es noch bis Januar 2011 unwahrscheinlich, dass die meist vom Westen protegierten Staatsoberhäupter ihre fest betonierten Machtstellungen einbüßen könnten. Zum Erhalt ihrer politischen Dominanz greifen die ‚Herrscher’ auf verschiedenste Mittel, u. a. kulturpolitische Maßnahmen, zurück. Im Zentrum dieser Untersuchung steht die Frage, inwieweit die Machthaber Hosni Mubarak in Ägypten, Muammar el-Gaddafi in Libyen und Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali in Tunesien in ihrer durchaus heterogenen Staatspropaganda auf antike Konzepte der Repräsentation von Macht Bezug nehmen.
Beleuchtet wird, wie sich die Antikenrezeption der postkolonialen Zeit im Vergleich zu der kolonialen Lage entwickelt hat. So stellten sich beispielsweise Frankreich in Tunesien und Italien in Libyen in die Erbfolge Roms und untermauerten diesen Anspruch mit dem hohen zivilisatorischen Standard der Römer, den ihre spektakulären Ausgrabungen zu Tage brachten. Die postkoloniale Reaktion fällt konträr zu diesem fiktiven Bild aus. Einheimische Wissenschaftler und Politiker identifizieren sich mit ‚Hochkulturen’, die bereits vor der Ankunft der Römer den Norden des Kontinents besiedelt hatten. Programmatische punische oder numidische Namen wie Massinissa oder Iugurtha erfreuen sich neuer Beliebtheit – das wohl prominenteste Beispiel liefert Gaddafis Sohn Hannibal. Ben Alis Palast wurde auf dem Stadtgebiet des punischen Karthago erbaut, Mubaraks Parteizentrale unmittelbar angrenzend an das Egytian Museum, inmitten des Stadtviertels Heliopolis. Gaddafi nutzt die hohe Medienpräsenz während internationaler Konferenzen, um durch das konsequente Residieren in einem Zelt auf seine berberische Abstammung hinzuweisen.
Paradoxerweise wird auch der Bezug zur römischen Vergangenheit betont. Antike Bezüge  auf Geldscheinen, Münzen, Briefmarken, Flaggen, in Ausstellungen, Architektur, Kunst und Urbanistik zeugen vom nationalen Bewusstsein der führenden Mächte über die römische Vergangenheit. Die Assimilierung moderner Städtenamen an ihre römischen Vorläufer stellt beispielsweise ein bekanntes Ergebnis dieser Identitätsbildung dar.
Dieses ‚antithetische’ Konstrukt der Repräsentation ist ein genuin antikes Phänomen. Die Absetzung von dem ‚Gegner’ ist notwendig, um sich selbst zu behaupten, Angleichung dagegen, um einen Anspruch auf demselben Feld zur Geltung zu bringen. Die Politisierung und Kommerzialisierung der Antike dient der Legitimation von Macht und kann als Aspekt opportunistischer Kulturpolitik eingestuft werden.

Dieser Vortragsentwurf behandelt die Transformation des vorrömischen zum frühkaiserzeitlichen Numidien und Mauretanien. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die Fragestellung, wie sich Veränderungen und Kontinuitäten urbaner und ländlicher sowie sozio-ökonomischer Bereiche im Kontext der sich seit dem 1. Jh. v. Chr. wandelnden politischen Rahmenbedingungen im archäologischen Befund nachweisen und erklären lassen. Der chronologische Bezugsrahmen wird von dem erstmaligen aktiven territorialen Ausgreifen Roms im frühen 1. Jh. v. Chr. in Nordafrika und der allgemein als Zäsur anerkannten Flavierherrschaft gebildet.
Die Untersuchung beschränkt sich auf die Stadt und ihr Umfeld. Hier haben erst neue Ausgrabungen und Studien in Tunesien und Marroko gezeigt, dass der Übergang zwischen vor- und frührömischer Zeit durchaus in größeren Dimensionen fassbar ist. Diese Ergebnisse liegen quer zur in der Forschung üblichen Annahme der „Afrique retardé“, der verspäteten kulturellen Integration Nordafrikas ins Imperium im Laufe des 2. Jh. n. Chr.
Stadtgründungen, Stadterweiterungen, Zerstörungshorizonte, Nekropolenverschiebungen, aber auch ‚geordnete Übergänge’ mit einem Nebeneinander zwischen Indigenen und römischen Zugezogenen sind anhand gut stratifizierter und epigraphischer Befunde nachzuweisen. Nicht nur die Monumentalarchitektur, sondern auch bisher weniger beachtete Sektoren wie Wohnbereich, Werkstattkomplexe, Stadtmauern oder hybride Architekturformen sind Indikatoren für Kontinuitäten und Wandel des Stadtbildes. Um eine möglichst repräsentative Schnittmenge zu erreichen, werden gezielt Fallbeispiele aus dem zu dieser Zeit in Nordafrika vorherrschenden Pool von extrem heterogenen Siedlungsformen behandelt.
Zudem gilt zu klären, welche Akteure hervortreten, bzw. wann und wie sich veränderte Verhältnisse auf deren Selbstverständnis und Repräsentation auswirken. Hierfür werden Gräber, Gebäudestiftungen sowie Ausstattungen privater oder öffentlicher Bauten herangezogen.
Die Stadt ist als solche nicht ohne ihr Umland verständlich, da wechselseitige Beziehungen auf zahlreichen Ebenen bestehen. Besiedlungsdichte, Wirtschaftsausrichtung, Installationen wie Ölpressen, Keramikproduktionen, villae rusticae oder rurale Heiligtümer sind nur einige Beispiele, die sozial-ökonomische Kontinuitäten und Veränderungen anzeigen.
Durch die geschilderte Vorgehensweise will die Studie einen Beitrag zur Schärfung des analytischen bzw. terminologischen Handwerkszeugs im vor- und frührömischen Nordafrika leisten.

This paper will examine a specific problematic derived from my PhD research on Roman Numidia? The Consequences of Rome's Presence in Numidia (2nd cent. BC – 1st cent. AD). After a brief outline of my whole project on Numidia, which came under Roman control in 46 BC, I would like to draw attention to one particular problem which has confronted me since the beginning of my work. According to most scholars, post 46-BC dated material evidence that doesn’t seem to be of Roman origin was linked to Punic, Numidian or Libyophoenician cultures (for themselves still lacking clear definition patterns) and might therefore show a continuity of distinctively pre-Roman cult beliefs, social structures, funerary traditions etc. Still today, this ‘traditionalism’ is contrasted with putatively different innovations credited to Romes' arrival in the former Punic and Numidian territories. Contradicting this binary model but limiting my presentation to some representative examples of funeral and domestic evidence, I want to stress that for instance tomb typologies or dwelling layouts and their consequent differentiation in historically identified ethnic groups cannot adequately explain our material findings from this transitional period. My argument will underline the complex structural and regional variety of these socalled pre-Roman continuities in the context of their new ‘Roman’ framework. In doing so, I hope that the discussion will offer other possible explanations for behaviour patterns in these two research fields becoming constantly more visible from the recent discoveries.
