Mating

Here we want to present new findings of Nyctalus noctula, Myotis myotis and Myotis daubentonii roosts in bridges in Slovakia. Annual observations from one bridge in Nitra showed high use of this habitat type. Also incidental findings from five other localities are presented. In Nitra 1533 records of N. noctula
were obtained during 28 surveys. Noctules used the bridge drainpipes and other crevices all year round except the summer months. The highest number was recorded in November (164 individuals) when groups of up to 60 individuals were present. In autumn mating aggregations accumulated (3–9 individuals). The bridge was also used by solitary M. myotis males (64 records). In autumn mating groups of 2–3 M. myotis were also present. Big aggregations of N. noctula (maximum 457 individuals) were also found in a bridge in Ružomberok. In addition, two other localities with bridge roosts of M. daubentonii were found.

""Largely based on pre-theory that ties high testosterone (T) to masculinity, and low T to femininity, high T is mainly studied in relation to aggression, mating, sexuality, and challenge, and low T with parenting. Humans are discussed within a comparative framework that attends to cross species principles informed by human insights alongside human-specific particularities like social constructions, which are critical to evolutionary understandings of the social role of T. This paper thus integrates seemingly orthogonal perspectives to allow for transformative approaches to an empirically supported social phenomenology of T.""

The European bumblebee, Bombus terrestris, is an invasive eusocial species whose distribution is expanding greatly beyond its native range because numerous colonies are imported to or locally produced in non-native countries for pollination of agricultural crops. Closely related species exist in Japan where the unrestricted import and use of B. terrestris has resulted in the establishment of wild colonies. Laboratory studies previously showed that B. terrestris and Japanese native species can copulate and produce fertilized eggs. Although these eggs do not hatch, the interspecific mating can cause a serious reproductive disturbance to native bumblebees. In this study, we determined the frequencies of interspecies mating between B. terrestris males and native bumblebee queens in the wild on the islands of Hokkaido and Honshu by analyzing the DNA sequences of spermatozoa stored in spermathecae of native queens. We found that 20.2% of B. hypocrita hypocrita queens and 30.2% of B. hypocrita sapporoensis queens had spermatozoa of B. terrestris males in their spermathecae. Given that a Bombus queen generally mates only once in her life, such high frequencies of interspecific mating with B. terrestris pose serious threats to the populations of native bumblebees in Japan.

This article looks at the evolution of sex differences in sexuality in human beings, and asks whether evolutionary psychology sometimes exaggerates these differences. According to a common understanding of sexual selection theory, females in most species invest more than males in their offspring and, as a result, males compete for as many mates as possible, whereas females choose from among the competing males. The males-compete/females-choose (MCFC) model applies to many species, but is misleading when applied to human beings. This is because males in our species commonly contribute to the rearing of the young, which reduces the sex difference in parental investment. Consequently, sex differences in our species are relatively modest. Rather than males competing and female choosing, humans have a system of mutual courtship: Both sexes are choosy about long-term mates and both sexes compete for desirable mates. We call this the mutual mate choice (MMC) model. Although much of the evolutionary psychology literature is consistent with the MMC model, the traditional MCFC model exerts a strong influence on the field, distorting the emerging picture of the evolved sexual psychology of Homo sapiens. Specifically, it has led to the exaggeration of the magnitude of human sex differences, an overemphasis on men’s short-term mating inclinations, and a relative neglect of male mate choice and female mate competition. We advocate a stronger focus on the MMC model.

Measurements of male and female copulatory behavior in pairs of common marmosets were made during 30-min mating tests (n = 170). For the male,both frequencies and latencies of mounting, pelvic thrusting, and ejaculatory behaviors were analyzed. For the female, frequencies of proceptive displays (tongue-flicking) and of sexual receptivity were measured. The sexual and associated behavior of the marmoset is compared to that of other primates and the suitability of this species for laboratory studies of neurohumoral mechanisms and sexual behavior is assessed.

The extraordinary array of mating systems in the Scolytidae and Platypodidae has been largely overlooked by researchers interested in the evolution of sexual behaviour. This paper provides the first overview of reproductive behaviour in this important and widespread group, known to most biologists only by the reputations of tree-killing taxa.Referred to generally as ‘bark beetles’, these insects chew egg tunnels inside a variety of (usually dead) plant tissues, though most species are either phloeophagous (breeding in the inner bark of woody plants) or xylomycetophagous (all stages feeding on mutualistic fungi growing on sapwood or heartwood). In most species, permanent records of many aspects of reproductive behaviour are etched in the host; in many, engravings reveal female fecundity, eggs sired per male, hatching success, and offspring survivorship. Each gallery arm represents a good portion of a given female's lifetime reproduction, but in many species females commonly re-emerge to reproduce in one or two additional sites.In most species of bark beetles, each female initiates her own gallery, to be joined later by a male. These monogynous gallery systems are associated with mating systems defined by how long males stay with females: in a few species, males seldom if ever join females under the bark; in the vast majority of species, males stay for part or all of the oviposition period then leave to seek other mates; and a few groups exhibit permanent monogamy, in that both sexes die in their only gallery system. While these patterns emerge from an overview of the world scolytid fauna, the length of male residency has seldom been quantified, and the costs and benefits associated with male mating strategies have not been measured for any bark beetle.Male-initiated monogyny is uncommon in Scolytidae, though the rule in Platypodidae; all instances of which I am aware are summarized from a phylogenetic perspective.Inbreeding polygyny with highly biased sex ratios has arisen at least seven times in Scolytidae. These taxa are usually characterized by males being dwarfed, flightless, and uncommon. Sex determination is known for only a few examples, but both haplodiploidy and diplodiploidy have been reported.Multiple origins of harem polygyny (otherwise rare in invertebrates) add an exciting dimension to the comparative and experimental study of scolytid mating systems. In harem polygynous taxa, males initiate gallery construction. I summarize what little can be learned from the literature about the fine structure of harem polygynous mating systems in bark beetles, and the problem of measuring reproductive success. Data on the nature of harem polygyny in Pityophthorus lautus are presented, illustrating (a) the fluidity of harems; (b) that average eggs laid per gallery arm is relatively unaffected by harem size, but strongly influenced by resource quality; (c) that male egg-gain is strongly correlated with territory quality (a consequence of (b) above); and (d) the temporal patterning of immigration and emigration and its effects on gallery system sex ratios.The second half of this paper is a discussion of the evolution of bark and ambrosia beetle mating Mating systems, emphasizing sexual selection and the role of resources. Male, residence is interpreted as postcopulalory guarding—preventing sexual liaisons with wandering males. Operational sex ratio, encounter rate, synchrony of breeding, ejaculate competition, and spatiotemporal distribution of resources are discussed as evolutionary forces moulding scolytid and platypodid male postmating behaviour. The nature of male male competition is reviewed. The paucity of information on male behaviour in gallery systems is mentioned; whether or not males significantly aid females is not known. Three hypotheses are presented for why females re-emerge, a feature which strongly affects operational sex ratios. Finally, I summarize features of bark beetle existence predisposing them to the evolution of post-inseminative guarding.Male-initiated monogyny presents a puzzle. I propose that most uncontested examples can be explained by monogyny re-evolving from (male-initiated) harem polygyny, and I present an argument for the evolution of harem polygyny leading to the development of male gallery initiation.The evolution of harem polygyny in birds and mammals has attracted considerable attention. The Verner Willson Orians polygyny threshold model is discussed with respect to bark beetles in general and P. lautus in particular. Resource quality is a major factor in P. lautus harem dynamics: the cost to females of joining harems is apparently slight compared to benefits accrued from moving into sites with higher quality inner bark.Female-biased adult sex ratios have been suggested to lead to harem polygyny, and literature and original data pertinent to this hypothesis are examined.The geometric constraints model, based on the polygyny threshold concept but tailored to bark beetles, is proposed to account for the failure of most species to evolve harem polygyny, and testable predictions are derived that interrelate breeding systems, habitat quality, and progeny size.The evolution of Inbreeding is briefly covered, and two routes to inbreeding polygyny are suggested.

Mate location and recognition are essentially asymmetrical processes in the reproductive biology of calanoid copepods with the active partner (the male) locating and catching the largely passive partner (the female). This behavioural asymmetry has led to the evolution of sexual dimorphism in copepods, playing many pivotal roles during the various successive phases of copulatory and post-copulatory behaviour. Sexually dimorphic appendages and structures are engaged in (1) mate recognition by the male; (2) capture of the female by the male; (3) transfer and attachment of a spermatophore to the female by the male; (4) removal of discharged spermatophore(s) by the female; and (5) fertilization and release of the eggs by the female. In many male calanoids, the antennulary chemosensory system is enhanced at the final moult and this enhancement appears to be strongly linked to their mate-locating role, i.e. detection of sex pheromones released by the female. It can be extreme in calanoids inhabiting oceanic waters, taking the form of a doubling in the number of aesthetascs on almost every segment, and is less expressed in forms residing in turbulent, neritic waters. Mate recognition is a process where chemoreception and mechanoreception presumably work in conjunction. The less elaborate male chemosensory system in the Centropagoidea is counterbalanced by females playing a more active role in generating hydromechanical cues. This is reflected in females in the shape of the posterior prosomal margin, the complexity of urosomal morphology and the size of the caudal setae. Visual mate recognition may be important in the Pontellidae, which typically show sexual dimorphism in eye design. The most distinctive sexual dimorphism is the atrophy of the mouthparts of non-feeding males, illustrating how copepod detection systems can be shifted to a new modality at the final moult. In the next phase, the male captures the female using the geniculate antennule and/or other appendages. Three types of antennulary geniculations are recognized, and their detailed morphology suggests that they have originated independently. Grasping efficiency can be enhanced by the development of supplemental hinges. The scanty data on capture mechanisms in males lacking geniculate antennules are reviewed. It is suggested that the loss of the antennulary geniculation in many non-centropagoidean calanoids has evolved in response to increasing predator pressure imposed on pairs in amplexus. Spermatophore transfer and placement are generally accomplished by the modified leg 5 of the male. In some males, leg 5 consists of both a chelate grasping leg and a spermatophore-transferring leg, whereas in others, only the latter is developed. Tufts of fine setules/spinules and/or sclerotized elements on the terminal portion of the leg are involved in the transfer and attachment of the spermatophore. The configuration of gonopores, copulatory pores and their connecting ducts in the female genital double-somite is diversified in the early calanoid offshoots such as Arietellidae and Metridinidae, whereas in more derived groups, it is constant and invariable, with paired gonopores and copulatory pores located beneath a single genital operculum. The absence of seminal receptacles in most Centropagoidea limits the female's ability to store sufficient sperm for multiple egg batches, suggesting that repeated mating is necessary for sustained egg production. Discharged spermatophores are usually removed by the female leg 5 and/or specialized elements on other legs. In Tortanus (Atortus) Ohtsuka, which has rudimentary fifth legs in the female and complex coupling devices in the male, a spermatophore supposedly remains on the female urosome, since eggs appear to be released from a ventral opening of the spermatophore. The type of sexual dimorphism is closely related to habitat and biology. Some hyperbenthic families never show multiplication of aesthetascs on the male antennule, whereas families of the open pelagic realm such as the Aetideidae always have non-feeding males exhibiting secondary multiplication of antennulary aesthetascs. The various aspects and diversity of calanoid sexual dimorphism are herein considered in an evolutionary context.
