Order of the Engineer

oelogo

The Order of the Engineer was initiated in the United States to foster a spirit of pride and responsibility in the engineering profession, to bridge the gap between training and experience, and to present to the public a visible symbol identifying the engineer. The first ceremony was held on June 4, 1970. Since then, similar ceremonies have been held across the United States. The Obligation of the Order of the Engineer is similar to the Canadian "Ritual of the Calling of an Engineer," initiated there in 1926.

The desire to establish an ASABE link of the Order came from of ED-414, Professional Ethics Committee, with assistance from the Young Professionals Community. ASABE was accepted as a link (chapter) and had its first induction ceremony on August 9, 2011, at the ASABE Annual International Meeting (AIM), where inductees were invited to accept the Obligation of the Engineer and a stainless steel ring, which is worn on the little finger of the engineer's working hand.

Join the Order

We invite you to join the Order of Engineers. Eligible candidates include:

  • All graduates of ABET-accredited engineering programs
  • Seniors in ABET-accredited programs within two academic years of graduation
  • Licensed PEs
  • (By reciprocity) members of the Canadian Calling

The Link may also induct special engineers who, by reason of education, eminence, or experience, are deemed worthy of the Order with approval of the National Board of Governors.

We hold our induction ceremony at the AIM and inductees must be present to accept their certificate and ring. The cost of entering the Order is $20.00, and inductees should register with Tina Schultz onsite at the membership booth at the AIM. If you prefer to preregister, please complete an application. Questions? Please contact Tina.
