Tunnelling and the Casimir effect on a $D$-dimensional sphere
Abstract: Two fundamental signatures of Quantum Mechanics are tunnelling and the Casimir effect. We examine the ground state energetic properties of a scalar field confined on a $D$-dimensional sphere, and subjected to these two effects. We focus on $D=2$ and $D=3$, with a non-minimal coupling of a massless scalar field to curvature, which provides a radius-dependent effective mass. This scenario allows tun… ▽ More

Piecewise linear potentials for false vacuum decay and negative modes

False vacuum decay rates, more precisely
Abstract: We develop a method for accurately calculating vacuum decay rates beyond the thin-wall regime in a pure scalar field theory at the one-loop level of the effective action. Tunnelling-induced cosmic bounce in the presence of anisotropies
Abstract: If we imagine rewinding the universe to early times, the scale factor shrinks and the existence of a finite spatial volume may play a role in quantum tunnelling effects in a closed universe. Cosmic bounce and phantom-like equation of state from tunnelling

Abstract: We show how a mass mixing matrix can be generated dynamically, for two massless fermion flavours coupled to a Lorentz invariance violating (LIV) gauge field. The LIV features play the role of a regulator for the gap equations, and the non-analytic dependence of the dynamical masses, as functions of the gauge coupling, allows to consider the limit where the LIV gauge field eventually decouples from… ▽ More

Galaxy Rotation Curves in Covariant Horava-Lifshitz Gravity
Abstract: Using the multiplicity of solutions for the projectable case of the covariant extension of Horava-Lifshitz Gravity, we show that an appropriate choice for the auxiliary field allows for an effective description of galaxy rotation curves. This description is based on static and spherically symmetric solutions of covariant Horava-Lifshitz Gravity and does not require Dark Matter.

Maxwell Construction for Scalar Field Theories with Spontaneous Symmetry Breaking
Abstract: Using a non-perturbative approximation for the partition function of a complex scalar model, which features spontaneous symmetry breaking, we explicitly derive the flattening of the effective potential in the region limited by the minima of the bare potential. This flattening occurs in the limit of infinite volume, and is a consequence of the summation over the continuous set of saddle points whic… ▽ More

Spontaneous symmetry breaking and linear effective potentials
Abstract: The convexity of a scalar effective potential is a well known property, and, in the situation of spontaneous symmetry breaking, leads to the so-called Maxwell construction, characterised by a flat effective potential between the minima of the bare potential. Simple derivations are given here, which show how linear effective potentials arise from non-trivial saddles points which dominate the partit… ▽ More

On higher-order corrections in a four-fermion Lifshitz model
Abstract: We study a flavour-violating four-fermion interaction in the Lifshitz context, in 3+1 dimensions and with a critical exponent z=3. This model is renormalizable, and features dynamical mass generation, as well as asymptotic freedom. At one-loop, it is only logarithmically divergent, but the superficial degree of divergence of the two-point functions is 3. We calculate the two-loop corrections to th… ▽ More

On the Possibility of Superluminal Neutrino Propagation
Abstract: We analyze the possibility of superluminal neutrino propagation delta v = (v - c)/c > 0 as indicated by OPERA data, in view of previous phenomenological constraints from supernova SN1987a and gravitational Cerenkov radiation. We argue that the SN1987a data rule out delta v ~ (E_ν/M_N)^N for N \le 2 and exclude, in particular, a Lorentz-invariant interpretation in terms of a 'conventional' tachyoni… ▽ More

Lifshitz-type Quantum Field Theories in Particle Physics
Abstract: This introduction to Lifshitz-type field theories reviews some of its aspects in Particle Physics. Attractive features of these models are described with different examples, as the improvement of graphs convergence, the introduction of new renormalizable interactions, dynamical mass generation, asymptotic freedom, and other features related to more specific models. On the other hand, problems with… ▽ More

A Lorentz-Violating Alternative to Higgs Mechanism?
Abstract: We consider a four-dimensional field-theory model with two massless fermions, coupled to an Abelian vector field without flavour mixing, and to another Abelian vector field with flavour mixing. Both Abelian vectors have a Lorentz-violating kinetic term, introducing a Lorentz-violation mass scale $M$, from which fermions and the flavour-mixing vector get their dynamical masses, whereas the vector c… ▽ More

Spherically symmetric solutions, Newton's Law and IR limit λ->1, in Covariant Horava Lifshitz Gravity
Abstract: In this note we examine whether spherically symmetric solutions in Covariant Horava Lifshitz Gravity can reproduce Newton's Law in the IR limit λ->1. We adopt the position that the auxiliary field A is independent of the space-time metric [10,11], and we assume, as in [4], that $λ$ is a running coupling constant. We show that under these assumptions, spherically symmetric solutions fail to restore… ▽ More

Mass Hierarchies in Lorentz-Violation-induced Dynamical Mass Models
Abstract: We discuss the issue of fermion mass hierarchies between lepton and quark families in toy models of dynamical generation of fermion masses through minimal Lorentz Invariance Violation. Realistic hierarchies in chiral theories necessitate an extended gauge structure, which includes both vector and axial-vector interactions.
