TAIPEI -- Taiwan's leader called for peaceful coexistence with Beijing, just hours after Chinese President Xi Jinping reiterated his ambition to "reunify" with the democratic island.

"We hope that the two sides of the Taiwan Strait will resume healthy and orderly exchanges as soon as possible," President Tsai Ing-wen said in her final New Year's address in Taipei on Monday. "We also hope that we can jointly seek a long-term and stable way of peaceful coexistence between the two sides of the Strait through peace, equality, democracy, and dialogue."
