#RyanReckons During its life cycle, the red emperor fish inhabits just about every habitat in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Juveniles spend their first years in seagrass beds and mangroves. As they grow older, they move to the shallow lagoons before moving further towards islands before they reach maturity and breed in the outer reef. 🐟 🐟 #BiodiversityMonth

The Great Barrier Reef is recognised as one of the world’s best-managed coral reef ecosystems. It is our great privilege and responsibility to protect and manage this unique and special place. We are Australia’s lead management agency for the Great Barrier Reef and provide world-leading marine park management since 1975. We are a strong, efficient and agile natural resource regulator entrusted by Australia with the responsibility of managing the natural wonder that is the Marine Park. We use the best available scientific information and input from marine managers, researchers, experts, and Traditional Owners. Our work managing the Reef is guided by a range of plans, policies, regulations and legislation. The Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 sets out our functions and responsibilities. We directly manage activities that take place in the marine park, implement plans and policies for reef use and protection, and work with communities and industries that depend on a healthy Reef for recreation and their livelihoods. The Great Barrier Reef is big, beautiful and diverse. Internationally renowned for its outstanding biodiversity and beauty — and recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Area — it’s one of Australia’s most treasured national wonders. Covering some 344,000 square kilometres, this vast area contains a rich mosaic of plants, animals, habitats and heritage values and is one the world’s most unique and biologically diverse ecosystems.

They may have the greatest eyesight in all the ocean, but even sharks can’t read maps. And yet, they are reaping the benefits of arguably the most important map on the Great Barrier Reef – the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Zoning Plan 2003. Read on 👇 #Biodiversitymonth #GreatBarrierReef

Let's unpack the 2024 Great Barrier Reef Outlook report. The Outlook Report, released every 5 years by the Reef Authority, assesses the Reef's health, pressures, management, and what's next for the #GreatBarrierReef. The Report identifies climate change as the greatest threat to the Reef, with additional threats from coastal development, land-based runoff, and direct human activities such as illegal fishing. World-leading management, as well the Reef's sheer size, do provide this natural icon protective capacity. However, without additional global action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, this protection will continue to be eroded by persistent and broadscale impacts. The window to secure a positive future for the Great Barrier Reef is closing rapidly. Every increase in global warming further jeopardises the Reef's biodiversity and the associated cultural, social, and economic benefits. Every effective action taken now can improve the long-term outlook for the Reef. To take a deeper dive into the Outlook Report, and to discover what we're doing for the Reef, and what you can do, click here: https://lnkd.in/gvnq7jqB #LovetheReef

We’re helping to shape and inspire the leaders of tomorrow - and to do that, there’s no classroom on earth like the Great Barrier Reef! But not everyone can get there - that’s why our Reef Guardian School team are bringing the Reef to the world. On a recent visit to the Reef Authority office, our Minister for Environment and Water Tanya Plibersek joined a Virtual Learning Experience with Shalom College Bundaberg, where the students learnt about the incredible biodiversity and what makes the Great Barrier Reef, Great. Marine biologists take students on a journey through food chains and food webs to the incredible creatures and their features. Virtual Learning Experiences allow students to get up close with the wonders of the Reef, no matter where in the world they may be. #ReefGuardianSchools #LovetheReef

#RyanReckons If baby fish live in an area that is dangerous, they develop a behaviour called neophobia, which is Latin for fear of new things. The next time they come across something new, they immediately label it as risky, even if it's not, in an attempt to avoid possible death. #BiodiversityMonth

#RyanReckons Sea cucumbers are like the earthworms of the ocean world. They filter food from the water column and sift through the sea floor to filter organic matter from the sand, helping to keep the seafloor clean. 📸 C.Jones #BiodiversityMonth
