Stacey Thomas, CEO of The Wyatt Trust, delivered a powerful talk from the heart at the Philanthropy Australia Conference to a packed auditorium on reckoning with the past of the Trust and its founder, English colonial settler Dr William Wyatt. She spoke frankly about how his life impacted the lives of local First Nations peoples. In the article linked below, Stacey reflects on why it was important to deliver that speech to that audience and how she feels about the groundswell of feedback she’s received. She offers advice on how others can start their journey and where The Wyatt Trust, with its 138 years of history, goes next with theirs. The Everick Foundation uses archaeological services and scientific evidence, specifically the dating of culturally significant sites, combined with traditional knowledge systems to support First Nations communities preserve their culture and heritage in place, on Country. “The goal is to give Indigenous communities the tools to manage and protect their heritage,” said Tim Robins, Director of the Everick Foundation. “The history of Aboriginal occupation of this continent is incredibly complex. We’re talking 65,000+ years, and possibly much longer. Unfortunately, because we [non-indigenous Australians] really haven’t learned how to properly tell the stories that are written in the land, we’re destroying them at a vast rate. Everick Foundation’s purpose is to empower communities to better tell that story so people can understand the values before impacting on those sites." Calling all funders. At the Philanthropy Australia Conference in Adelaide last month First Nations Funders Network Chair, Leah Armstrong shared that a global study showed that just 0.6% of philanthropic funding benefits Indigenous Peoples. Even less goes directly to Indigenous Peoples (0.2%). What are the figures in Australia? Well, we don't know. We don't have the data. That's where you come in. If you are a funder, please take a short amount of time to fill out our survey, closing on Friday 13th September. Your response will create a benchmark report that will help us all understand the level of giving that benefits Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and organisations in Australia. And importantly the level of giving going directly to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander controlled and led organisations, which is so important to building self-determination and better outcomes. Thank you to all those who have already filled out the survey. Top marks! Please share with your contacts and help others get behind this important report. A report commissioned by the FRRR (Foundation for Rural & Regional Renewal) into its long-running Tackling Tough Times Together (TTTT) $18.6 million drought support program has found that funding locally based NFPs and community groups, along with activities that strengthen social capital during drought, sustains communities and supports recovery. The report was launched during an online presentation on 29 August, hosted by FRRR’s CEO, Natalie Egleton. She said that often rural communities need broad funding for facilities and infrastructure, such as ensuring the local kindergarten has a safe playground or the volunteer emergency services has a well-maintained building. “It’s often the broad stuff that helps to keep towns going and we know that matters.” Read more in the article below, recently published in Philanthropy Weekly. #philanthropy #PhilanthropyWeekly #drought
