An effort in Detroit, Michigan, to recall City Councilman Gabe Leland was initiated in January 2019. Petitioners failed to submit enough signatures to put the recall on the ballot.

Recall supporters

Petitioners began the recall process in January 2019, after Leland was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of bribery in October 2018. A trial for Leland took place in August 2019. Ramon Jackson, a citizen who filed the petition with the Wayne County Clerk’s Office on January 3, 2019, said, "We need proper representation in that seat, this isn't just about the federal probe... He should have been recalled and out of there even before he got indicted ... he's being doing wrong ever since he got in there."

Recall opponents

After the petition was approved for circulation, Leland's attorney, John Knappmann, said that Leland would appeal. "This petition lacks the basis to be approved," Knappmann said.

Petitioners had until March 13 to submit enough signatures to trigger a recall. Michigan law says that petitioners have 60 days beginning on the date the first signature is collected to submit a number of signatures equal to 25 percent of the votes cast in the district for governor in the last gubernatorial election. In this case, petitioners believed that number was between 2,000 and 3,000 signatures.
