Recall supporters

Organizers initiated the recall in response to Hull pleading guilty to operating a vehicle while impaired by alcohol on January 23, 2023. He was sentenced to community service and a minimum of three days in jail. Recall organizer and resident Jeff Hickson said, "Burton deserves better than this. Greg Hull has committed a crime and should be held accountable. Mr. Hull is not above the law."[1]

Organizers initiated the recall process by filing a petition with the Genesee County Clerk’s Office on February 24, 2023.[1] The county election commission held a hearing on March 9, 2023, to determine whether the petition could be circulated.[2]

The commission rejected the petition language due to errors, but organizers said that they planned to refile the petition.[3][4]

In March 2023, the election commission approved a revised version of the petition for circulation.[5]

For a special election to be scheduled, organizers would have needed to collect signatures equalling 25% of city voters who cast a vote in the previous gubernatorial election.
