Haldane Robert Mayer is a federal judge on senior status with the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He joined the court in 1987 after being nominated by President Ronald Reagan. Mayer assumed senior status on June 30, 2010.[1]
Early life and education
A native of Buffalo, N.Y., Mayer graduated from the United States Military Academy at West Point with his bachelor's degree in 1963, and from the College of William and Mary School of Law with his J.D. in 1971. Mayer served in the U.S. Army from 1963 to 1975.[1]

Mayer was nominated by Ronald Reagan on February 3, 1987 to a seat vacated by Marion Bennett when Bennett assumed senior status. Hearings on Mayer's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on June 5, 1987, and his nomination was reported by then-U.S. Senator Joseph Biden (D-Del.) on June 5, 1987. Mayer was confirmed by the Senate on June 11, 1987, on a voice vote. Mayer received his commission on June 15, 1987. Mayer has served as the chief judge of the Federal Circuit from 1997 to 2004. Mayer took senior status on June 30, 2010.[1][2]
United States Court of Federal Claims
Mayer was nominated by Ronald Reagan on September 27, 1982, to a fifteen year term on the United States Court of Federal Claims. Hearings on Mayer's nomination were held before the Senate Judiciary Committee on December 1, 1982, and his nomination was reported by U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond (R-S.C.) on December 8, 1982. Mayer was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on December 10, 1982, by unanimous consent and he received his commission that same day. Mayer left the court on June 19, 1987, upon his elevation to the United States Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit.[1][3]
