Leonard T. Strand is a federal judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa He was nominated by President Barack Obama on July 21, 2015, and confirmed on February 11, 2016.[1][2] From 2017 to 2024, Strand served as chief judge of the district court. From 2017 to 2024, Strand served as chief judge of the court.[3]

Strand was previously a federal magistrate judge for the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa. He joined the court on June 7, 2012, and left when he became an Article III federal judge.[4]

Bildung

Strand earned his B.A., with high distinction, from the University of Iowa in 1987 and his J.D., with highest distinction, from the University of Iowa College of Law in 1990.[4]

Strand was appointed to the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa on July 21, 2015. Obama commented on the nomination, saying:

" I am pleased to nominate Judge Leonard Terry Strand to serve on the United States District Court bench. I am confident he will serve the American people with distinction.[1][5]

The American Bar Association rated Strand Unanimously Well Qualified for the position.[6]

Strand's Committee on the Judiciary hearing was held on October 21, 2015, and his nomination was reported to the full Senate on November 5, 2015, on a voice vote. His nomination was confirmed by the Senate on February 11, 2016, on a vote of 93 to 0.[7][2]

From 2017 to 2024, he served as chief judge of the district court.[3]

Northern District of Iowa magistrate

Leonard T. Strand joined the United States District Court for the Northern District of Iowa as a federal magistrate judge on June 7, 2012. His term ended when he became an Article III federal judge for the same court on February 11, 2016.[4]
