Michael F. Urbanski is a federal judge on senior status with the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia. He was nominated by President Barack Obama in December 2010. From 2017 to 2024, he served as chief judge of the district court. He assumed senior status on July 4, 2024.[1]

Previously, Urbanski was a federal magistrate judge for the court, a position he was appointed to on January 23, 2004.[2]

Early life and education

Judge Urbanski was born in 1956 in Livorno, Italy.[1] He received his B.A. degree from the College of William and Mary in 1978 and his J.D. degree from the University of Virginia in 1981.[3]

Professional career

Judge Urbanski began his career in 1981 as a law clerk to U.S. District Judge James Turk of the Western District of Virginia. The following year he joined the law firm of Vinson & Elkins in Washington, D.C., where he worked until 1984.[3]

On December 1, 2010, Urbanski was nominated to the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia by President Barack Obama.[4]

Urbanski's nomination was returned to the President at the end of the 111th Congress.President Obama resubmitted the nomination on January 5, 2011.

Urbanski was rated Unanimously Well Qualified by the American Bar Association. He had a hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on February 16, 2011, and you can find his hearing transcript here. He was moved out of committee on March 10, 2011.[5]

Urbankski's nomination was confirmed on May 12, 2011, by a vote of 94-0.[6]
