Heading into the election, Ballotpedia rated Washington's U.S. Senate race as safely Democratic. Incumbent Patty Murray (D) won re-election in 2016. She defeated Chris Vance (R) in the general election on November 8, 2016. Murray and Vance defeated 15 other candidates to win the primary on August 2, 2016. In Washington, all candidates run in the same primary and the two candidates who receive the most votes, regardless of party affiliation, advance to the general election.[3][2]

Campaign themes

2016

The following issues were listed on Cornell's campaign website. For a full list of campaign themes, click here.

"
  • Trade & the TPP: Trade agreements must be fair and transparent. “Made in China” is not necessarily a bad thing, some may disagree, but what happened to “Made in USA”? NAFTA, CAFTA, WTO, PNTR-China, and other “free” trade agreements have killed “Made in USA”. FREE trade should not be the goal of the United States Trade Representative; FAIR trade should be their goal.
  • Climate change: Climate change is real and it is happening now. Our window of opportunity for restorative or preventative action is rapidly closing. The science is undeniable unless you are a Koch puppet. We have the technology and the innovative scientists and inventors to change our energy structure to one that does not need fossil fuel. Leave it in the ground!
  • Education: A basic education (through completion of grade 12) is currently a right of every American citizen, paid for by property taxes and voter approved levy’s. This right should be extended to a college education. A college education should not place a huge debt on each student. To that end, Public colleges and Universities should be tuition free to the students. Scholarships from prospective employers, a tax on Wall Street speculation and other tax reforms can pay for college.
  • Healthcare: Healthcare is a right of every American. Obscene profits by insurance and pharmaceutical companies is not a right. The solution is a single-payer system, “Medicare for all”. Mental healthcare should be a significant part of the overall healthcare system. Treating substance abuse patients in the same facilities as those with depression and other mental disorders is like hiring a plumber to fix your plumbing and electrical wiring.
  • Money in Politics: Corporations are not people. They do not breathe; they do not have children; they do not die fighting in wars for our country, and they do not vote in elections. Citizens United v. FEC is wrong and must be overturned. The influence of money in politics is destroying our country.
