Rebecca Quintana and Reynold Esquivel were recalled from their positions on the Board of Trustees of the Stone Corral School District in Tulare County, California in a recall election that took place on April 9, 2013.

Tom Redemer was elected to replace Esquivel. Deborah Camille Roberts was elected to succeed Quintana.

The Stone Corral School District is a K-8 district with about 130 students.

Reynold Esquivel

Reasons for recall

According to their statement in the official voter guide, supporters of the Esquivel recall advocated for removing him from office because:

"The community members of Stone Corral School District are recalling governing board member Reynold Esquivel due to a number of reasons starting with the board member not living within the school jurisdiction. He does not operate on behalf and trust of the people or the children. He does not answer the community’s questions in regards to allegations of releasing employees. He has made false statements to damage school employees’ reputation. He has become personally embroiled with members of the community. He has refused to speak or hear any of the parents due to the fact they are not registered voters. He has usurped the Superintendent’s role. He does not allow him to make any decisions on behalf of the school. Board member Reynold Esquivel does not evaluate the employees nor listen to the Superintendent’s recommendations."

Esquivel response

The response of Esquivel to the accusations of recall supporters, presented in the official voter guide, said:

"The accusations are not true and represent a few who have a personal and selfish agenda; not the best interest of students. I am proud of the service I have given my community, Seville. The charge that I don’t live in Seville has been made and it was settled by the county.

Personnel issues must be kept confidential, I cannot answer questions regarding the potential or the actual releasing of employees.

No false statements have been made, concerns have been brought to my attention, I take them to the superintendent, for him to investigate and resolve.

I am willing to talk to anyone who has the best interest for Stone Corral; non-voter and voter. I treat everyone with respect and I expect to be treated with respect. I will not talk to anyone who uses a raised voice, or someone looking for an argument. The superintendent evaluates staff, not the board.

I listen to the superintendent’s recommendations, it is my jobs to evaluate these recommendations; accept them or deny them, or better, to come up with a plan that we both support.

The only thing that matters is what is best for the students, I request your continued support."

"The community members of Stone Corral School District are recalling governing board member Rebecca Quintana due to a number of reasons starting with the board member not living within the school jurisdiction. She does not operate on behalf and trust of the people or the children. She does not answer the community’s questions in regards to allegations of releasing employees. She has made false statements to damage school employees’ reputation. She has become personally embroiled with members of the community. She has refused to speak or hear any of the parents due to the fact they are not registered voters. She has usurped the Superintendent’s role. She does not allow him to make any decisions on behalf of the school. Board member Rebecca Quintana does not evaluate the employees nor listen to the Superintendent’s recommendations."

I have always put the student’s needs first.

State law requires me to keep personnel issues confidential – I cannot answer questions regarding the potential or the actual releasing of employees.

I have not made false statements, I have taken concerns brought to my attention by staff, parents, students, and community members to the superintendent for him to investigate and address.

I am willing to talk to anyone with an interest in what is best for Stone Corral; non-voter and voter. I require that they treat me with respect as I do them. I will not talk to anyone who uses a raised voice, acts intimidating, or seeks an argument.

The superintendent evaluates staff. The board’s job is to establish policy and evaluate the superintendent.

I listen to the superintendent’s recommendations, it is my jobs to evaluate these recommendations; accept them or deny them, or better, to come up with a plan that we mutually support.

I request your continued support."
