Robert Peterson
Robert Peterson (b. September 26, 1951) is a former North Dakota State Auditor. Peterson, a Republican, was first elected to the position in 1996, and assumed office in January of 1997. He won subsequent elections in 2000, 2004, 2008, and 2012. Peterson declined to seek election to a sixth term in 2016.[1][2]
Biography
Peterson was born in 1951 in Fargo, North Dakota. He graduated from Williston High School, earned an AA from the University of North Dakota-Williston, and holds a B.S. from the University of North Dakota. Before assuming office, he worked for two years as an assistant manager in retail accounting for Super Valu Stores, Inc. He worked for the North Dakota State Land Department as an accounting and budget specialist from 1978-1996, when he was elected in 1996 to replace his father as state auditor.[3]

Though eligible, Peterson declined to seek election to a sixth term in 2016. "It’s just an opportunity to walk away while you’re feeling good about the direction the office is going," he said in a statement in October 2015.[2]
2012
Peterson won re-election in 2012. He was unopposed in the primary election and defeated State Rep. Scot Kelsh (R) in the November general election.[4][5]
