About us

Established in 2010, WeForest develops holistic and multi-stakeholder reforestation projects through a Forest and Landscape Restoration approach. Our vision is of a world where communities and nature sustainably thrive together to stop global warming ‘in our lifetime’. Our mission is focused on conserving and restoring the ecological integrity of forest landscapes with local communities to deliver lasting solutions for climate, nature, and people. Today we have over 70 000 ha (700 million m2) and 100 million trees under restoration across 3 continents; with proper funding, we can double this impact in less than five years.

The Global Mangrove Alliance’s 'The State of the World’s Mangroves' report is back with a new 2024 edition!   A collaboration of over 100 authors from around the world, this vital document contains new science solidifying the role of mangroves as natural climate solutions, and confirming their importance to coastal communities and biodiversity. The report features our project with OCEANIUM restoring 10,000 hectares of mangroves in Senegal’s Casamance and Sine-Saloum deltas and rivers. Working with NGO Eclosio ONG, the project also addresses the root cause of mangrove loss by supporting the communities in taking up mangrove-friendly, income-generating activities that allow the restored areas to regenerate and grow 🌱 Read more about this project on pages 57, 71 and 72 🔖 #WorldMangroveDay

Exciting news from Zambia! 👨🌾 Smallholder farmers working with WeForest are set to take part in an exciting new research project, aimed at optimizing high-quality organic compost and increasing crop productivity. Driven by Zambia’s Copperbelt University, the research focuses on 'bokashi', a potent organic fertilizer that enhances soil health and crop yields. Through lab work at CBU and field trials with these farmers, the project will develop an optimal version of bokashi compost, able to improve soil fertility, increase crop productivity, and enhance the livelihoods of farmers in our Conservation Agriculture programmes. Here’s a positive story to end your week 📰✨ The Katanino team recently shared the moving story of 33-year-old Aubrey, who started working with WeForest in July 2019 when he was recruited and trained to collect the socio-economic baseline data. In 2020, Aubrey joined the Katanino Law Enforcement Team to patrol the Forest Reserve. Together with 14 other community members he was instrumental in reducing illegal charcoal incidents - from a peak of 296 in February 2020 to zero in April 2022. The monthly allowance he received from forest patrols was the main household income for his family of six. Unfortunately, in 2023, he became visually impaired, which meant he couldn't continue his law enforcement duties. Aubrey's wife, Olipa, was among the women engaged in the project's Treadle Pump Scheme for vegetable production. She was able to take over as the household's breadwinner through vegetable production, growing cabbages and rape. Despite his loss of sight, Aubrey helps with pumping water. They now earn enough from vegetable sales to buy food for the family, pay for school materials for the kids, and buy more seeds for their 0.25 ha vegetable plot 🥬

We’re #hiring a Geospatial Data Scientist! 🥼 This role will involve performing geospatial analysis to understand landscape dynamics in our projects. You'll be assessing past changes in forest or agricultural land cover to support new project designs, and evaluating forest cover increase during and after projects. Please share far and wide with your network for anyone interested in #conservationjobs and #greenjobs 🌳 🌿: https://lnkd.in/er_b_zD7

Honey badgers spotted in Katanino 🍯🦡 Five years ago, sights like this were very uncommon in the heavily degraded Katanino Forest Reserve. Now we can see the amazing impact of our ecological restoration, as wildlife returns! These honey badgers (Mellivora capensis) may look cuddly, but don’t get too close – they’re one of Africa’s most ferocious animals, and have even been known to attack lions when threatened. Just look at that scamper! #reforestation #restoration #wildlife
