Customs and the WCO finally made it onto Jeopardy! Growing up, I spent many an evening in front of the television watching the game show Jeopardy! I learned last week that the show picked up the topic of Customs. I never expected important things from my childhood and my present would connect this way. Customs isn’t normally in the public eye. It’s known if you are involved in international trade or have traveled to another country, but it’s not usually well understood. This is partly because it’s an enforcement agency that makes itself most visible when there’s a problem. However, it’s also because its broad range of functions can make it difficult to describe. We appreciate the result every time we buy or consume something brought imported into our country from elsewhere, but most don’t usually consider how products reach them from far away. We take for granted that the goods we receive from other countries are safe, but who makes sure this is the case? We’re able to enjoy all of this because Customs works hard to make it possible. So, here are some other potential Jeopardy! clues whose responses could also have been “What is Customs?” 1. This government agency oversees the safe movement of trillions of dollars in legitimate trade across borders around the world each year. 2. Apart from internal taxation, this agency is often one of the most important sources of government revenues that support public services of every kind. 3. This agency prevents illegal narcotics, weapons, counterfeit goods, and a host of other dangerous materials from entering a country. Borders divide. Customs connects. Thank you #Jeopardy
