1. Congratulations on your assignment to the 106th Medical Detachment (VSS)/PHA-K! The 106th /PHA-K is the best MTO&E/TDA veterinary unit in the United States Army today and the only one assigned a dual mission. The 106th Medical Detachment (VSS)/PHA-K is a direct reporting Unit to the 65th Medical Brigade, located at Camp Humphreys. As part of Eighth Army and United States Forces Korea we are on the cutting edge of providing world-class combat health service support to America’s finest Warriors. We are the assignment of choice. I am certain you will find this a challenging and rewarding assignment.

2. The following is a brief history of the 106th Medical Detachment (VSS). The 106th Medical Detachment (VSS) was first activated on 1 October 1944 in New Guinea and saw action in the Philippines Luzon Campaign from 17 October 1944 to 4 July 1945. The 106th Medical Detachment (VSS) again saw action in the Korean Conflict from 21 March 1951 to 27 July 1953 in support of the United Nations. The unit received two Meritorious Unit Citations and one Philippine Presidential Unit Citation.

3. The Detachment has 59 authorized personnel consisting of a headquarters element, 5 Veterinary Service Support (VSS) Teams, a Food Procurement and Laboratory Team (FPLT), a Veterinary Medical and Surgical Team (VMST) and Korean Augmentation To the United States Army (KATUSAs). The HQ, FPLT, VMST, Team 1, 2 and 3 are located at Camp Humphreys (Pyeongtaek), Korea. Team 4 is located at Camp Walker (Daegu) and Team 5 is located at Osan AB. Once you arrive and in-process, you will receive pin-point orders to your duty location.

4. Upon arrival you will complete 5 days of in-processing though Maude Hall and will belong to 19th HRC at Camp Humphreys. On the fifth day you will be picked up by a member of the 106th Medical Detachment (VSS). Upon your arrival to the 106th Medical Detachment (VSS) you will receive your final destination and team assignment and will be given pin point orders.

5. Personnel who are command sponsored will need to make reservations at Camp Humphreys Lodging.

The 106th Medical Detachment (Veterinary Support Service) is a diverse organization in South Korea.  Our primary mission is to provide support if necessary for the transition to hostilities.  However, we are also responsible for veterinary public healthcare support through comprehensive food protection and veterinary medical and surgical care for government owned animals.  Our mission of veterinary medical and surgical care for privately owned animals limited due to our primary mission and therefore is on a space available basis.
