This is personal. Over a year into the war in Sudan, we yearn for the days we can hope again. UNHCR’s Omer Elnaiem reports from his homeland, where the situation is heartbreaking. Millions of shattered lives. Destroyed homes and infrastructure. Hunger. Harrowing journeys to safety. Families torn apart. Countless human rights abuses. Enough. #KeepEyesOnSudan

We lead international action to protect refugees, forcibly displaced communities and stateless people. We also work to ensure that stateless people are granted a nationality. We work in over 130 countries, using our expertise to protect and care for millions. UNHCR’s greatest asset is our workforce. We work with passionate, talented and creative individuals who want to use their skills for good. Do you have personal rituals that help you balance the demands of a professional life?🌿 Larissa Schlotterbeck, Head of External Engagement for UNHCR in West and Central Africa, found her path to inner peace in the timeless discipline of Ashtanga Yoga. In today’s #StaffSpotlight, she reflects on the importance of morning routines, hidden passions and soul-nurturing practices that help us thrive. #HumanitariansAtWork
How Do You Sustain Yourself? On a recent work trip, at the start of a day filled with meetings, a colleague mentioned he hadn’t slept well. He had woken at 5 a.m. and so he got up, took a warm bath and said his morning prayers. As he strode off in his suit, ready to engage with donors and partners, I treasured this little piece of information about his inner world. Another colleague is a member of a choir. I’ve known her professionally for many years, but only recently, did I learn she sings soprano and practices diligently twice a week. The relentless pace of thinking and doing in our professional lives can be unforgiving as we plan, organize, solve and live externally, always on, with technology that does not help. Twenty-two years ago, I walked into a small, bright studio in London, and was introduced to #astangayoga, a practice that has accompanied me through my life, sometimes daily, sometimes weekly, across countries and continents, in good times and bad, but always there. It is these inward turning practices that people choose to commit to —often routines or rituals—while managing demanding work and personal lives, that intrigue me as I see them as a gesture of self-care. Preserving a bit of yourself while giving your all. Today, my teacher said, "Some people come to the mat, and you can feel they are in prayer." That felt about right. Whether it's worship, singing, movement or another practice, the aim is never to achieve but rather to be present with ourselves. To be lost in something we are committed to, that allows us to take distance, disconnect from our job title and ultimately invest in ourselves so that we can sustain with integrity in our fast paced and demanding lives.

A new photo exhibition in Paris, on show throughout the #Paris2024 Olympic Games, captures the power of sport for refugees and displaced people. The photos show how sport can transform the lives of the forcibly displaced – whether as a vehicle for building lasting friendships, changing negative attitudes, enhancing social cohesion or taking the best and most talented all the way to the Olympic Games. Here are some of the inspiring images from the exhibition: https://bit.ly/460wctA
