New legislation targeting women in Afghanistan aims to completely erase their presence in public, silence their voices, and deprive them of their autonomy, warns United Nations Human Rights. “This is utterly intolerable,” said spokesperson Ravina Shamdasani, adding that the law reinforces existing restrictions on women’s fundamental human rights, effectively attempting to render them into faceless, voiceless shadows. The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk has called for the recently-adopted legislation to be immediately repealed, stressing that it is in clear violation of Afghanistan’s obligations under international human rights law.
