The Morning Call newspaper was founded 7 December 1883 as the Allentown Critic by Samuel S. Wooleve. David A Miller joined the newspaper in 1894, and it became The Morning Call on 1 January 1895 when Miller took over ownership of the paper. On 1 January 1900, the newspaper became a member of the Associated Press, which gave it a national newsfeed.
On 31 December 1918, the Allentown Democrat and Daily City Item ended publication. This was the oldest English-language newspaper in Allentown, founded in 1837. Its offices, at 101 North Sixth Street (Northeast corner of Sixth and Linden Street) was in a new building, erected in 1910 on the site of the former Allentown Academy of Music, which had burned down in 1901. It was then re-organized and became the Morning Hearald, which began publishing on 17 November. On 17 March 1920, it was announced that The Morning Call was being purched by the Hearald and David A Miller would retire, due to ill health. The joint newspaper would continue to published under the name of The Morning Call, which would succeed the Hearald Publishing Company. Royal W. Weiler in charge of publishing the paper. The offices of The Morning Call would subsequently move to the offices of the Hearald along with its publishing equipment. The Call has maintained its offices at this location ever since, and is where the current-day newspaper is located today. In 1921, the Morning Call published its first Sunday edition. On 20 January 1926, Morning Call Publishing would be purchased by General Harry C. Trexler.
On 1 July 1934, after Harry Trexler's death in an automobile accident, David Miller re-acquired controlling interest in the newspaper from the Trexler Estate. Subsequently, on 4 October 1935, Miller also acquired from the Trexler estate the Allentown Chronicle and News, which was established in 1870 at 12 South Seventh Street, at the southwest corner of Center Square, between the YMCA and Merchant's National Bank building. With the acquisition Miller's company was renamed Call-Chronicle newspapers. The Chronicle became Allentown's evening paper, known as the Evening Chronicle, and was operated as a separate entity with its own columns and advertisers from The Morning Call, which was published in the morning. Its offices, in fact, did not move into the Morning Call's building at Sixth and Linden street until 1937 when the newspaper received new presses.
Jointly with Roy Weller and J C Humberger, Miller, as senior partner, controlled the paper, and Miller obtained full ownership in 1952. He passed in January 1958 and ownership was transferred to his son, Samuel W. Miller. He published the paper until his death in April 1967, when control went to his brother David Miller. In June 1980, the Evening Chronicle ceased publication after 110 years, and was merged into the Morning Call. Then, in 1984, control of The Morning Call transferred to the Times Mirror organization when David Miller sold Call-Chronicle Newspapers and retired. The newspaper has gone through a series of out-of-town owners since.
David Miller passed in January 1996
