Charles Frederick Lindauer (1836-1921) was described in 1894 as a "small fry" in organized crime in New York City. He operated an illegal lottery in Manhattan. In 1881 he took over the Theatre Comique in Jersey City, New Jersey, once a legitimate theater, and converted it into a "leg show" where alcohol was sold without a liquor license.
