Help request

[edit]

Regarding your post on the help forum: is this what you were looking for? File:Michael Phelan.JPG -- Jonathunder (talk) 21:50, 12 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:4 ladies playing pocket billiards.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Hello, Fuhghettaboutit!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Masako Katsura

[edit]

While looking at the thread on Wikipedia Japan that you had mentioned in the above deletion request, I explored the video clip mentioned and this is where things turn interesting... The clip is from Universal-International News (also known as Universal Newsreel), a division of Universal Studios. Now, supposedly, all material of Universal Newsreel have been gifted to the National Archives (NARA) and its owners "withdrew their rights and title in favour of the National Archives in trust for the American people. As the National Archives made the collection generally on an unrestricted basis, Universal thus became the only major newsreel whose use was not encumbered by royalty and licence fees." (p. 10 Smither, Klaue, Newsreels in film archives (1996)) Lawrence and Timberg also state: "Universal Newsreel, for example, is the only sound-era newsreel collection substantially in the public domain, by virtue of Universal Studios' deed to the National Archives ...". (Fair use and free inquiry (1989), p. 246)

I am uncertain if this means the newsreels have been declared to be in the public domain (i.e. the owners has surrendered all copyrights to them), but the Archives state for the newsreels: "Access Restriction(s): Unrestricted; Use Restriction(s): Restricted - Possibly, Copyright, Some or all of this material may be restricted by copyright or other intellectual property right restrictions." If you are interested in uploading the clip to Commons, I would suggest a check at Commons talk:Licensing, or with Elcobbola, Lupo, or Clindberg. I do note that there is Category:Universal Newsreels, but as noted above, sometimes things are overlooked or uploaded in mistaken circumstances... Jappalang (talk) 05:19, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, thanks for looking. I might try at a future time, though the clip is already posted as an external link in the article. I imagine eventually there will be a Japanese Wikipedia article on her (though this might be in quite a few years), and they will be able to find more stuff on her. It will help if I can get the article featured. On that score I have had a flap over a great fair use image. If this gets deleted, as it appears it should be, that will ironically help on that issue as there will no longer be a "free equivalent". Not that I want it deleted, but it doesn't appear I have a leg to stand on on the verifiability issue of publication, so it is what it is.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 11:27, 13 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

PNG version of your button

[edit]

File:Speedy delete contest button.png Except that I just realized JUST now that the middle of the button is transparent also. Argh lol, sorry. I have a massive head cold and have not been thinking clearly. Normally, this is not a big deal. (Do you have Photoshop? You take an image, turn its "background" layer into a regular "layer", then set the blending mode of that layer to Multiply (with a white background). Boom, simple. But I forgot to protect the inside of the image. So wait for one more upload! – Keraunoscopia (talk) 22:14, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I was okay with the first version you uploaded! That is not the say I will turn up my nose at better versions; improve away! I really am a beginner's beginner at these programs. I recently switched to a Mac but used PAINT.net before that and was only fumbling around with very basic stuff. I downloaded GIMP but it seems rather complicated. I'm sure if I applied myself, sat down with some tutorials, I could become proficient but my interests lie elsewhere. Thanks for the effort.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 22:22, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a problem. This is so basic that it's almost embarrassing that it took me 15,000 attempts to get it right. Try the PNG now (or if you already did, it should be corrected). With the JPGs, I was erasing the white pixels in the corners and cropping out the top white part. For the PNG, all I did was make one layer "Multiply" with a second layer protecting the button. I tested it with a pattern background and there's no discernible difference between the original JPG and the new PNG, so I finally got it right. GIMP should be able to do this, but I gave up trying to figure that program out! – Keraunoscopia (talk) 22:29, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Ok I'm not the brilliant image manip I thought I was. I'll keep working on it. – Keraunoscopia (talk) 22:32, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Done. Blending modes don't export as transparent (the pixels are still there). So I did, in fact, have to paint out the background, but I'd had so much practice by now, it was a cinch lol. Thanks for your patience, sorry you didn't land with someone a little more pro, but I learned something today : ) – Keraunoscopia (talk) 22:51, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I landed with someone willing to make the effort. Great job and thanks.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:40, 4 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! : ) Always happy to help. – Keraunoscopia (talk) 01:19, 5 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Are you still seeing the original version that has the border with the photographer's name? I uploaded a cropped version, and I think it was just a cache issue that was causing the original to still display. Postdlf (talk) 21:11, 21 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

No, at least not any longer. I couldn't actually tell you if it was there or not. I think it was, and if so it was a cache issue, but I may have been editing too quickly. If you look at my recent contributions, you'll see I was tagging a whole series of images all by the same uploader with that watermark/credit issue, so I might have failed to see this one was the odd image out, that was already fixed.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 22:08, 22 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In regard deletions made to Michael Stever:

I am a colleague of Stever. He provided the information to me that you deleted.

Please advise on how to restore it.

I'm new to Wikipedia as you know and sorry to say I find it extremely user unfriendly. Kudos to you who work with the platform and navigate it easily. But I'm at sea.
