Context: Clone Wars Expanded Universe, Order 66 figure pack.

The 501st serve in the Grand Army of the Republic and are distinguished by the blue markings on their armor. Airborne troopers are specifically trained and equipped to perform high-altitude drops. They wear advanced armor and a sensor-loaded helmet with atmosphere filtration system.


For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met.

In the page below, items listed in blue are recommended features that will improve the quality of the costume. Items listed in red are intended to further enhance the finished costume.


This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.


Airborne 501st Helmet.jpg Helmet
  • Realistic style ROTS Airborne helmet.
  • Armor is painted matte or satin white with blue details.
  • Helmet has rounded dome with no Mohawk.
  • Blue stripe on front of dome wraps around to create a cap on dome.
    • Stripe begins above visor and is about 1 3/4 inch wide and aligns with blue nose bridge below lens.
    • Stripe continues up about 2 inches above lens and curves outward around dome.
    • Curving pattern creates a blue cap on dome that tapers to back with a 4 inch wide back edge.
      • A 1/4 inch white space is left between blue and back edge of dome.
  • Helmet has narrow horizontal black eye lens.
  • Triangular shape nose bridge detail, below the eye lens, has a blue center indent.
  • Along each side of eye lens are semi circular Intake vents with a protruding tube extending towards back of helmet.
    • Intake is covered with black mesh or screen.
  • Area below the nose bridge splits open to the base and has a black protruding vertical inset column detail.
  • Base of helmet has two widened ventilation tube bands with widest tube band on bottom.
  • Ends of smaller tube band, above the helmet base, have a black mesh opening in front.
  • Two black round aerators are located in the split area in front of lower tube band.
  • Base tube band has oval shaped inset ventilation detail with vertical ribbing at the front cheek areas.
  • Helmet has a grey indented band that extends around back of helmet with black edging along the bottom.
  • Aerator cap is centered on back of helmet just below black band.
  • Blue areas are weathered with various scuff marks exposing the underlying white.
  • Armor is weathered with shades of grey.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Helmet has detailed engraved design running from each side of visor and down toward the base tube band.





Clone trooper neck seal.jpg Neck Seal
  • Neck seal is black in color with vertical ribbing or smooth in appearance.
  • No logos or labels are visible.
    • If the seal is not incorporated as part of the undersuit, a balaclava or other similar covering is acceptable.

  • Black non-textured material, either one-piece or two-piece construction with no visible zippers or logos.




Airborne 501st Shoulders.jpg Shoulder Armor
  • Realistic style shoulder armor.
  • Shoulders are tear drop in shape with all rounded edges.
  • Shoulders are matte or satin white overlaid with blue.
  • Grey ammo cartridge webbing strap is attached to Left Shoulder.
    • Webbing strap is attached to center of armor.
  • Webbing strap holds (11) Silver cartridges which are approximately 3/4 inch in diameter, and 2 1/2 inch long.
  • Blue areas are weathered with various scuff marks exposing the underlying white.
  • Armor is weathered with shades of grey.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Cartridges have indented angled star detail on front and indented circular detail on back side.




Airborne 501st Biceps.jpg Upper Arm Armor
  • Realistic Style Bicep Armor.
  • Armor is painted matte or satin white.
  • Armor has a front hard line outside edge and inside rounded edge, with indented area on back.
  • Armor is seamless.
    • No visible traces of how the armor was assembled are shown.
  • Left arm has two 3/8 inch wide parallel grey straps that attach ammo cartridge, spaced 3/8 inch apart and run horizontally around the bicep.
  • A large ammo cartridge is attached to bands on the outside of left arm. Small ammo cartridge used for Clone Commanders is not acceptable.
    • Ammo case is Light Gray with a dark gray clip.
    • Clip is flat and does not have an indented square at top.
  • Armor is weathered with shades of grey and has scuff marks.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Ammo straps attach to cartridge with top strap aligning with top edge of grey cartridge.

  • Realistic style elbow armor.
  • Armor is painted matte or satin white.
  • Elbow straps have a raised detail line at the top and bottom of the strap.
  • Armor has two parallel dashed detail slots on each outside edge of elbow at the strap connection.
  • Elbows are mirror images of each other with a notched area on the outside of the elbow above the detail marks.
  • Armor is weathered with shades of grey.




Airborne 501st Forearms.jpg Forearm Armor
  • Realistic style forearm armor.
  • Armor is painted matte or satin white with blue detail.
  • Wrist end of forearm has a blue stripe about 3/4 inch wide and spaced about 1/4 from wrist edge and wraps around armor.
  • Right forearm has a compad with (8) small buttons, (1) large main button, and (1) slightly smaller rectangular button closest to the elbow.
  • Armor is seamless.
    • No visible traces of how the armor was assembled are shown.
  • Blue areas are weathered with various scuff marks exposing the underlying white.
  • Armor is weathered with shades of grey.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Compad has detail antenna along right side of buttons.




Airborne 501st Hands.jpg Hand Plates
  • Realistic style hand plates.
  • Hand Plates are painted matte or satin white.
  • Hand plates have a top curving ridge that come to a point over the index or middle finger just past the main knuckle of the hand.
  • Hand plates are weathered with various scuff marks.
  • Armor is weathered with shades of grey.





Generic-black-gloves.jpg Gloves
  • Black over the wrist gloves made of leather, nylon, or other low pile fabrics.
  • Gloves cover any exposed skin.
  • Gloves do not show any labels or logos when the armor is worn.




Airborne 501st Chest.jpg Chest Armor
  • Realistic style Chest Armor.
  • Armor is painted matte or satin white with blue details.
  • Two detail slots on lower outside edge of right raised chest area.
  • Armor has blue “A” pillar shape design pattern that runs up the center of chest.
    • Blue pillar design is narrowest at top with about 1 1/2 inch width and widens downward.
    • Design is about 3 2/8 inches wide at the elevated chest edge, and about 4 3/8 inches wide at bottom, just above top abdomen edge.
    • Blue pillar design flares outward along bottom edge about 3 7/8 inches in length creating about a 1/2 inch blue border on front surface.
    • Blue carries over beveled indented edge along abdomen.
    • Flares end in vertical cut edges that angle toward elevated chest corners.
  • Two white rectangles aligned vertically in center create the “A” shape design.
    • Top white small rectangle is about 3/8 H x 1 3/8 W inches and located in center of chest, just about 1/8 inch below elevated chest area.
    • Bottom white long rectangle is spaced about 1/2 inch below top rectangle and is a continuation of the 1 3/8 wide white that runs down to bottom edge of armor.
  • Chest and back armor match together at the sides with no open gap.
    • A seam line is present.
  • Shoulder straps are placed underneath the chest shoulder slots to connect to the back armor.
  • Blue areas are weathered with various scuff marks exposing the underlying white.
  • Armor is weathered with shades of grey.




Airborne 501st Back.jpg Back Armor
  • Realistic style back armor.
  • Armor is painted matte or satin white with blue details.
  • Back has a detail plate with four circles on top, two elongated areas on left, and vents on lower right.
  • Detail plate is all blue with the exception of the rectangle vents on lower right.
  • Back and chest armor match together at the sides with no open gap.
    • A seam line is present.
  • Shoulder straps are placed underneath the back shoulder slots to connect to the Chest Armor.
  • Armor is weathered with shades of grey.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Highly detailed resin Back box plate cover with circuitry insets.
  • Blue on detail back plate is heavily worn through exposing underlying white.




Airborne 501st Harness.jpg Airborne Harness
  • Realistic style Airborne Harness.
  • Shoulder strap harness connector attaches over the right shoulder strap.
    • Harness connection has a silver strap connector on front and back, with center band colored black.
  • Front khaki belt strap is 2 inches wide and extends from the top of the two front belt boxes and feeds through front harness connector.
  • The right belt box strap runs up and into the harness connector from behind, then feeds outward over front and crosses the chest down to left belt box. Front belt boxes each have a small, 1/2 inch high, black connector frame detail on top that strap feeds into.
  • A silver buckle is secured at the center of the cross over strap.
  • Black plate with tan border is overlaid on top of front straps over right chest. Plate is located between shoulder connector and metal buckle.
  • Khaki belt strap on back is 2 inches wide and attaches to back harness connector. Strap extends down to connect to rear right belt box, next to the detonator.
  • Rear right belt box has a small 1/2 inch high black connector frame detail on top that strap feeds into.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Right shoulder strap harness connector is overlaid with black vinyl.




Airborne 501st Bag.jpg Airborne Bag
  • Realistic style messenger type Airborne Bag.
  • Bag is khaki colored military messenger type bag, about 8 1/2 inches wide with shorter height of about 6 1/2 inches.
  • 1 inch shoulder strap attaches to each side of the bag. Strap has a black shoulder pad where the strap rests over the shoulder armor.
  • A light tan 1 1/2 wide vertical strap is centered on bag under top flap. The same light tan strap 3 1/2 inches in length is attached on each side of bag just under shoulder strap.
  • Two 1 inch wide grey ribbed straps run vertically over the bag front flap cover and under the flap on the bag. These straps are evenly spaced between the center light tan strap and outside edge of bag.
  • (3) detonator canisters 2 inch long and 1 1/4 inch diameter are wrapped in 2 inch webbing and secured to front facing bag strap.
  • Bag is weathered with shades of grey.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Canisters have detail end cap with right side end having an indented circle detail 5/8 inch diameter, and left facing end have a 1 inch raised circular area with inner circle pattern.




Airborne 501st Abdomen.jpg Abdomen Armor
  • Realistic style Abdomen Armor.
  • Armor is painted matte or satin white.
  • Eight 1/4" diameter holes, with four holes inside each indented channel of the abdomen.
  • Abdomen section wraps around the wearers body and is sealed at sides or at back.
  • Abdomen is completely contained under the chest and back armor.
  • Abdomen aligns with codpiece with the seam line hidden by the belt.
  • Armor is weathered with shades of grey.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Seam line along sides or back has no gap.

  • Realistic style Codpiece.
  • Armor is painted matte or satin white.
  • Codpiece and Posterior Armor connect at the hips.
  • Armor is weathered with shades of grey.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Hips have correct detail connector snap and edge feature at the codpiece and posterior side connection.

  • Realistic style Posterior Armor.
  • Armor is painted matte or satin white.
  • Posterior Armor and Codpiece connect at the hips.
  • Armor is weathered with shades of grey.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Hips have correct detail connector snap and edge feature at the codpiece and posterior side connection.




Airborne 501st Belt.jpg Belt
  • Realistic style belt, boxes, and detonator.
  • Belt, boxes and detonator are painted matte or satin white with blue detail.
  • Eight Belt Boxes are attached to Belt, with four on each side.
    • The two largest Boxes are in front with angled top surface that is higher toward the center.
    • The smallest boxes are located behind the front boxes, about 1/8 inch apart and have an angled end on top.
    • The medium sized matching boxes, with flat top cover, are about 1/8 inch from smallest boxes.
    • Left rear box is spaced closer to detonator and has two square buttons in the top left corner, and two dashed indented detail marks on bottom right.
    • Right rear box is spaced closer to detonator and has a bar with two small cylinders centered, and two dashed indented detail marks on bottom left.
  • Silver kama buckle is attached behind front belt center and hangs below.
  • Belt front, between front boxes, has three vertical rectangle indents which are spaced apart by two protruding rectangle areas.
    • 1 inch wide Blue vertical bar is on each of the two protruding rectangle areas. A 1/4 white border is left surrounding the blue rectangle.
    • The rest of the belt is flat surfaced with raised edging on top and bottom that run along the rest of the belt.
  • Front Belt Boxes have blue detail inverted “T” shapes that are 13/16 inch wide on vertical bar, and 9/16 inch wide on horizontal bar.
  • A detonator is centered and attached to back of Belt.
    • Detonator tube is about 2 1/4 inch diameter with wider detailed end caps.
    • Seven horizontally aligned square buttons are on left side of tube, facing backwards.
    • The first, second, fifth and sixth buttons are blue.
  • Belt is weathered with shades of grey and has scuff marks.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Boxes are notched on back and fit flush to belt.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Back of belt, between rear boxes, has horizontal ribbing.
  • Detonator is securely fastened to back of belt with no flimsy look and with no visible clips.




Airborne 501st Kama.jpg Kama
  • Realistic style Kama is khaki with a blue edge.
  • Blue border edge is 1 inch wide.
  • Center bottom edge of Kama has a 4 inch high triangle split.
  • Kama wraps around cod and posterior armor under the belt. Front edges align about 1 inch behind outside edge of front belt boxes.
  • Kama is made from a heavy fabric material like denim or duck cloth.
    • Leather or vinyl is not acceptable.
  • Kama extends down to align with the bottom of the knee armor.
  • White 3/4 inch wide connector straps are attached to Kama, approximately 6 inches below the belt boxes.
  • Metal clips at each end of the straps connect to the kama buckle extended down from center of belt front.
  • Kama is weathered.




Airborne 501st Thighs.jpg Thigh Armor
  • Realistic style Thigh Armor.
  • Armor is panted matte or satin white with blue detail.
  • Two parallel vertical blue stripes about 1/2 inch wide each and 3/4 inch apart run down the center of the outside facing side of each thigh.
    • Front stripe top edge aligns with armor edge and is spaced about 1 1/2 inches below armor edge.
    • Back stripe top edge aligns with armor edge and is spaced about 1/8 inch below armor edge.
    • Both stripes continue down to bottom edge of armor.
    • Stripes align with stripes on the lower leg armor.
  • Thigh Armor has a flat triangle area above the knee which transitions to a ridge line that runs up the front of the thigh to the top edge.
  • Rear of armor has an indented area.
  • Armor is seamless.
    • No visible traces of how the armor was assembled are shown.
  • Blue detail has scuff marks that expose underlying white.
  • Armor is weathered with shades of grey.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Outside lower portion of the thighs come to a point and inner lower end is rounded.




Airborne 501st Knees.jpg Knee Armor
  • Realistic style Knee Armor.
  • Armor is panted matte or satin white with blue detail.
  • Blue stripe edge follows the bottom curve of knee armor with about a 1 1/4 inch width. Top of blue curve pattern creates a white downward point just below elevated vertical rectangle.
  • Knees have a protruding flat area in front oriented towards the top of Knee.
  • Knees bend around the front and connect to white detail clips that connect the strap on each side.
  • A white colored flat strap, about 1 1/2 inches wide, wraps around back of leg.
  • Blue detail has scuff marks that expose underlying white.
  • Armor is weathered with shades of grey.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Flat strap has raised 5/8 Inch wide grey center strap.




Airborne 501st Shins.jpg Lower Leg Armor
  • Realistic style lower leg armor.
  • Armor is panted matte or satin white with blue detail.
  • Two parallel vertical blue stripes about 1/2 inch wide each and 3/4 inch apart run down the center of each outside facing side of lower leg armor.
    • Back stripe is aligned with raised point on outside top edge of armor.
    • Both stripes run full length of armor from top to bottom edge.
    • Stripes align with stripes on the thigh armor.
  • Front of lower leg has a flat triangular detail at the top which transitions to a ridge line that travels down the front of the armor to the ankle.
  • Back of lower leg armor features arched indentation, just under the calf, that follows down to the ankle.
    • Bottom of this indentation features a smaller arch detail at the heel.
  • Outside of the calf is closed.
    • Calf can have an access area on the inside of the leg.
  • Calves are seamless and have a trap door access through the indent in the rear of the lower leg.
  • Armor is weathered with shades of grey and has scuff marks.




Airborne 501st Boots.jpg Boots
  • White, ankle high or tall enough to cover the ankle and eliminate any black undersuit visible at the ankle.
  • Boots are lace-less.
  • The boots have armor detail to include a natural seam at the toe and a strap that wraps over the top of the foot with a protruding disk at each side of the strap.
  • There are no markings or labels from the shoe makers.
  • Boot soles are flat.
  • Boot soles are colored primer grey.




Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.



DC15 carbine.jpg DC-15S Blaster

Manufactured by BlasTech Industries, the DC-15S is smaller in scale than the DC-15A blaster rifle. Although it has a shorter range than that of the “A” model, it is easier to handle with a higher rate of fire and features a folding stock for braced firing.

  • Realistic Clone Style DC-15S Blaster.
  • Blaster may be scratch built out of plastic, wood, metal or cast in resin.
  • Blaster has realistic Episode II or Episode III details:
    • Wire frame sight.
    • Folding stock.
    • Twelve radiator fins evenly spaced along the length of barrel.
    • Igniter detail knobs.
    • Charge magazine clip on right side.
  • Total length is approximately 26 inches (66 cm).
  • Because of the scale, the Hasbro version is incorrect.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Charge magazine detail on clip is metal to gun metal grey in color.
  • Detail bolts and screws are metal to gun metal grey in color.
  • Igniter knobs have some copper coloring.
  • Blaster is weathered.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Functioning Blue LED is installed in barrel.





DC15 rifle.jpg DC-15A Blaster Rifle

Manufactured by BlasTech Industries, the DC-15A is a Tibanna gas cartridge powered weapon. Hyper-ionized blue plasma bolts are more than capable of penetrating armored units. Exceptionally effective against both droids and contemporary targets.

  • Realistic Clone Style DC-15A Blaster Rifle.
  • Blaster rifle is scratch built out of plastic, wood, metal or cast in resin.
  • Blaster has realistic Episode II or Episode III details:
    • Flip up sight in down position.
    • Ten radiator fins are evenly spaced along the length of the barrel.
    • Power setting adjuster detail lever.
    • Sniper Scope attached under rifle in storage position.
    • Charge magazine clip on left side.
    • Igniter detail knobs.
  • Total length is approximately 55 inches (139.7 cm).
  • Because of the scale, the Hasbro version is not allowed.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Charge magazine detail on clip is metal to gun metal grey in color.
  • Detail bolts and screws are metal to gun metal grey in color.
  • Igniter has some copper coloring.
  • Power setting adjuster detail lever is metal or gun metal grey.
  • Sniper scope is metal or gun metal grey.
  • Blaster is weathered.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Functioning Blue LED is installed in barrel.
