Clone troopers are an army of identical, genetically-modified clones, created to serve in the Grand Army of the Republic. Cloned and raised on the water world of Kamino, the clone troopers are trained from birth to serve as efficient military forces. They possess unwavering loyalty to the Galactic Republic and its leader, Supreme Chancellor Palpatine.


For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met.

In the page below, items listed in blue are recommended features that will improve the quality of the costume. Items listed in red are intended to further enhance the finished costume.


This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.

  • Phase I style clone trooper helmet.
    • Phase I style helmet fin on top of dome.
    • Rear tip of fin has “brake light” detail.
  • Helmet has a black eye lens that obscures wearer’s eyes.
  • Helmet has a black brow band, just above the eye lens, that extends around to the back of helmet.
  • Helmet frown is charcoal grey in color.
    • Frown has six parabolic shaped “teeth” cut out.
    • Wire or plastic mesh is utilized inside the helmet to cover the open pieces of the frown.
  • Six vents are present on each side of the helmet cheeks below the ear.
  • Primer grey stripe around back of dome.
  • The rear of the helmet features a recessed, black vent detail.
  • A raised round area is present on the back of the helmet.
    • The face of the round area is divided into four quadrants.
    • Each quadrant features a raised rectangular detail.
  • Helmet is painted satin or gloss white.
  • Helmet is weathered with black scuffs similar to reference.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Helmet has the appearance of a neck ring.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Helmet has an enclosed complete neck ring that seals the helmet to the neck.
  • Rear fin light is illuminated.
    • Light is steady and does not blink.

  • Neck seal is black in color with vertical ribbing or smooth in appearance.
  • No logos or labels are visible.
    • If the seal is not incorporated as part of the undersuit, a balaclava or other similar covering is acceptable.

  • Black non-textured material, either one-piece or two-piece construction with no visible zippers or logos.

  • Shoulders are tear drop in shape with all rounded edges.
  • The left shoulder features eighteen cylindrical ammo cartridges.
    • Cartridges are approximately ½ inch in diameter and 2½ inches long.
    • Cartridges are attached via black webbing.
    • The sides of the cartridges are painted black and the ends are grey or silver with a black indentation.
  • Armor is painted gloss or satin white.
  • Armor is weathered with black scuffs similar to reference.

  • There is a dimple on the lower area of the back of the arm.
  • The outside of the bicep has a hard line edge at the front that turns in.
  • The inside of the upper arm is rounded.
  • Armor is seamless.
    • No visible traces of how the armor was assembled are shown.
  • A single ammo clip is present on the outside of the left bicep.
    • Ammo clip is attached with two, grey bands that wrap around the bicep.
  • Armor is painted gloss or satin white.
  • Armor is weathered with black scuffs similar to reference.

  • Elbow straps have a raised detail line at the top and bottom of the strap.
  • Armor has two parallel dashed detail slots on each outside edge of the elbow at the strap connection.
  • Elbows are mirror images of each other with a notched area on the outside of the elbow above the detail marks.
  • Armor is painted gloss or satin white.
  • Armor is weathered with black scuffs similar to reference.

  • Both left and right forearms are mirror images of each other.
  • Right forearm has a compad with 8 small buttons, 1 large main button, and 1 slightly smaller rectangular button.
  • Forearm tops have a flattened triangular area with a ridge that comes to a point at the top of the forearm.
  • Armor is seamless.
    • No visible traces of how the armor is assembled are shown.
  • Armor is painted gloss or satin white.
  • Armor is weathered with black scuffs similar to reference.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Compad has detail antenna along the left edge.

  • Hand plates are mirror images of each other.
  • Hand plates have a top curving ridge that comes to a point over the index or middle finger, just past the main knuckle of the hand.
  • Armor is painted gloss or satin white.
  • Armor is weathered with black scuffs similar to reference.

  • Black over the wrist gloves made of leather, nylon, or other low pile fabrics.
  • Gloves cover any exposed skin.
  • Gloves do not show any labels or logos when the armor is worn.




BF2 P1 StdHeavy harness.jpg Heavy Assault Harness and Satchel
  • Shoulder strap harness connector attaches over the right shoulder strap.
    • Harness connection has a silver strap connector on front and back, with center band colored black.
  • Harness is constructed of black or dark grey webbing.
  • Front strap is 2 inches wide and extends from the top of the front, right belt box and feeds through the front harness connector.
  • There are three cylindrical canisters attached to the front of the strap via fabric loops.
    • The sides of the canisters are black and the ends are primer grey or silver.
    • There is a recessed black circle on both ends of each canister.
  • The front strap crosses diagonally over the chest and is attached to a satchel worn over the left hip.
    • Satchel is constructed of grey-brown canvas or canvas like material.
    • Harness straps attach to the sides of the satchel.
    • Satchel is closed by a square flap with rounded corners and two grey, nylon straps.
  • Front belt boxes each have a small, ½ inch high, grey connector frame detail on top that the strap feeds into.
  • A silver buckle is secured at the center of the cross over strap.
  • Overlaid on top of front straps, over the right chest, is a black, angular plate. Plate is located between the shoulder connector and metal buckle.
  • Back strap extends diagonally, under the backpack and connects to the rear side of the satchel.
  • Rear right belt box has a small ½ inch high grey connector frame detail on top that the strap feeds into.
  • There is an additional black armor mantle attached to the harness over the right shoulder.
    • Shoulder mantle consists of two segments connects with two rivets.
    • Smaller section of mantle features two rivets on the lower, front edge.

  • Two detail slots are present on the right breast.
  • Chest and back armor match together at the sides with little to no open gap.
    • A seam line is present.
  • Shoulder straps are placed underneath the chest to connect to the back.
    • Shoulder straps are slotted into the detail ridges of the top connection points.
  • Armor is painted gloss or satin white.
  • Armor is weathered with black scuffs similar to reference.

  • Rear center plate has detailed area that contains 4 circles.
    • Under the circles, at the left side of the back, there are two parallel lines
    • On the right of the back there is a squared detail.
  • Back and chest armor match together at the sides with no open gap
  • A seam line is present.
  • Shoulder straps are placed underneath the back to connect to the chest.
  • Shoulder straps are slotted into the detail ridges of the top connection points.
  • Armor is painted gloss or satin white.
  • Armor is weathered with black scuffs similar to reference.

  • Armor is painted gloss or satin white.
  • The backpack has a large, black Republic emblem on the back of the pack.
    • The emblem is weathered with scuffs that expose the underlying white.
  • The backpack has a trapezoidal, grey, cloth covering over the top opening.
    • The covering has a grey trim.
    • The covering is attached to the back of the pack with a single silver snap.
  • The sides of the pack feature raised geometric shapes matching visual references.
  • The bottom of the pack features a rounded area where a cylindrical capsule would sit.
    • The pack does not feature a cylinder like the animated or Sideshow Toy versions.
  • Armor is weathered with shades of grey.

  • Two inset lines divide the abdomen armor into segments.
    • Four ¼ inch diameter holes are present in each of the inset lines.
  • Abdomen armor wraps around the wearer’s body and is sealed at the back.
  • Abdomen armor is completely contained under the chest and back armor.
  • Armor is painted gloss or satin white.
  • Armor is weathered with black scuffs similar to reference.

  • Codpiece and posterior armor connect at the hips.

  • Realistic style belt, boxes, and detonator.
  • Belt, boxes, and detonator are painted matte or satin white.
  • Belt front, between front boxes, has three vertical rectangle indents which are spaced apart by two protruding rectangle areas.
    • The rest of the belt is flat surfaced with raised edging on top and bottom that run along the rest of the belt.
  • Eight Belt Boxes are attached to Belt, with four on each side.
    • The two largest Boxes are in front with an angled top surface that is higher toward the center.
    • The smallest boxes are located behind the front boxes, about 1⁄8 inch apart and have an angled end on top.
    • The medium sized matching boxes, with flat top cover, are about 1⁄8 inch from smallest boxes.
    • Left rear box is spaced closer to detonator and has two square buttons in the top left corner, and two dashed indented detail marks on the bottom right.
  • Right rear box is spaced closer to detonator and has a bar with two small cylinders centered, and two dashed indented detail marks on the bottom left.
  • A detonator is centered and attached to back of Belt.
    • Detonator tube is about 2 1⁄4 inch diameter with wider detailed end caps.
    • Seven horizontally aligned square buttons are on the left side of the tube, facing backwards.
  • Armor is weathered with shades of grey.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Boxes are notched on back and fit flush to belt.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Back of belt, between rear boxes, has horizontal ribbing.
  • Detonator connects to back of belt without any visible clips and is firmly secured in horizontal position.

  • A holster is worn over the right hip.
  • Holster is connected to the belt via a white nylon strap.

  • Front of thigh armor has a flat triangular area near the knee.
  • From the top of the triangle a ridge line travels up the front of the thigh to the top edge.
  • Rear of the thigh has an indention.
  • Armor is seamless.
    • No visible traces of how the armor was assembled are shown.
  • Armor is painted gloss or satin white.
  • Armor is weathered with black scuffs similar to reference.

  • Knee Armor wraps around the front of the leg.
  • From top center a vertical raised detail line is present.
  • Knees are strapped to the leg via a white strap with a raised center area that wraps around the leg and connects on both sides of the knee.
  • Center strap is primer gray.
  • Connection between the knee and the strapping has a detail clip.
  • Armor is painted gloss or satin white.
  • Armor is weathered with black scuffs similar to reference.




BF2 P1 StdHeavy shins.jpg Lower Leg Armor
  • Lower Legs are mirror images of each other.
  • The front of the armor has a triangular detail at the top of the leg and a hard ridge line down the front of the shin.
  • Back of lower leg armor features arched indentation, just under the calf, that follows down to the ankle.
    • Bottom of this indentation features a smaller arch detail at the heel.
  • Outside of the calf is closed.
    • Calf can have an access area on the inside of the leg.
  • Calves are seamless and have a trap door access through the indent in the rear of the lower leg.
  • Armor is painted gloss or satin white.
  • Armor is weathered with black scuffs similar to reference.





Clone shoes copy.jpg Boots
  • White, ankle high or tall enough to cover the ankle and eliminate any black undersuit visible at the ankle.
  • Boots are lace-less.
  • The boots have armor detail to include a natural seam at the toe and a strap that goes over the top of the foot with two protruding disks at each side of the strap.
  • There are no markings or labels from the shoe makers.
  • Boot soles are flat.
  • Boot soles are colored primer grey.




Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.



DC15 carbine.jpg DC-15S Blaster

Manufactured by BlasTech Industries, the DC-15S is smaller in scale than the DC-15A blaster rifle. Although it has a shorter range than that of the “A” model, it is easier to handle with a higher rate of fire and features a folding stock for braced firing.

  • Realistic Clone Style DC-15S Blaster.
  • Blaster may be scratch built out of plastic, wood, metal or cast in resin.
  • Blaster has realistic Episode II or Episode III details:
    • Wire frame sight.
    • Folding stock.
    • Twelve radiator fins evenly spaced along the length of barrel.
    • Igniter detail knobs.
    • Charge magazine clip on right side.
  • Total length is approximately 26 inches (66 cm).
  • Because of the scale, the Hasbro version is incorrect.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Charge magazine detail on clip is metal to gun metal grey in color.
  • Detail bolts and screws are metal to gun metal grey in color.
  • Igniter knobs have some copper coloring.
  • Blaster is weathered.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Functioning Blue LED is installed in barrel.





DC15 rifle.jpg DC-15A Blaster Rifle

Manufactured by BlasTech Industries, the DC-15A is a Tibanna gas cartridge powered weapon. Hyper-ionized blue plasma bolts are more than capable of penetrating armored units. Exceptionally effective against both droids and contemporary targets.

  • Realistic Clone Style DC-15A Blaster Rifle.
  • Blaster rifle is scratch built out of plastic, wood, metal or cast in resin.
  • Blaster has realistic Episode II or Episode III details:
    • Flip up sight in down position.
    • Ten radiator fins are evenly spaced along the length of the barrel.
    • Power setting adjuster detail lever.
    • Sniper Scope attached under rifle in storage position.
    • Charge magazine clip on left side.
    • Igniter detail knobs.
  • Total length is approximately 55 inches (139.7 cm).
  • Because of the scale, the Hasbro version is not allowed.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Charge magazine detail on clip is metal to gun metal grey in color.
  • Detail bolts and screws are metal to gun metal grey in color.
  • Igniter has some copper coloring.
