Context: Expanded Universe

The Blackwing Officers were introduced in a Star Wars Expanded Universe novel Death Troopers. The book follows the classic zombie outbreak story, but set on a Star Destroyer. The Blackwing Officers were later used in Star Wars Galaxies.

Please note: This particular costume may not be welcome at all 501st events. This is not recommended as a primary Legion membership costume. Please contact your garrison CO/GML with any questions if you are planning to create one.



This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.

  • Exposed skin is covered with zombie-like prosthetics.
  • Face, neck, and all exposed skin must be covered by a choice of appropriate make up (efx) or silicone mask (low quality Latex and rubber masks are not allowed).
  • Skin color is a range of pale greens and purples, with skin showing signs of deterioration.
  • The eyes appear deep set from the large brow line.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Movie grade quality silicon full mask
  • White or red contacts are worn

  • Fabric is a medium weight suiting material, exactly matching the tunic and trousers.
    • Cavalry Twill or a Gabardine style weave is most accurate.
  • Color matches the tunic and trousers.
  • Fabric shows signs of distress.
  • Color gives the appearance of faded feldgrau or black.
    • Tans and light grays are acceptable.
  • Base of the hat is conical, with a crown about 4" (101.6 mm) tall.
  • Front and rear “flaps” overlap on the sides, with the back flap over the front, and are about 4" (101.6 mm) high.
  • Front bill extends about 3" down, decorated with (5) (6) or (7) concentric stitches.
  • Imperial Code Disk positioned in the center of the front vertical “flap”.

  • Fabric is a medium weight colored suiting material matching the trousers (and hat).
    • Cavalry Twill or a Gabardine style weave is most accurate.
    • Color gives the appearance of faded feldgrau or black.
      • Tans and light grays are acceptable.
  • Tunic is double-breasted with a left over right closure on the tapered yoke.
  • Yoke comes up across the shoulder to the top shoulder seam.
    • The standing collar has square corners, is between 1.25" (31.8 mm) to 2" (50.8mm) tall.
    • Collar edges are closed together in front with two eye hooks.
  • There are code cylinder pockets on both outside panels of the jacket, from about half way between the top and bottom on the arm hole.
  • Tunic has long sleeves which are without decoration, cuffs or buttons.
  • Sleeves contain (2) seams.
    • One along the bottom and one along the back.
  • Tunic is constructed with no top-stitching (stitches visible on the exterior surface of fabric).
  • Fasteners on the uniform may be visible due to the distressed nature of this costume.
  • Fabric is heavily distressed and appropriately aged including stains that emulate blaster shots and/or aged dry blood.
  • There is a dart present on the top center of the yoke.
    • The dart may vary in size due to the size of the wearer’s individual tunic and how it fits, but should be between 2 to 4 inches (50.5mm to 101mm) in length. Typically, but not always, the dart ends at or below the top of the code cylinder pocket.
  • There is a seam running the entire circumference of the tunic, dividing it along a seam line.
  • The back of the tunic has princess seams that run vertically and turn outward to intersect the arm hole seam at the vertical center.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • The back of the tunic does not have princess seams, but instead a single center seam.
  • Tunic is secured on the right side by snaps or buttons, not Velcro.
  • A lining is sewn in.
  • On each side biceps, there is a blaster mark with some fabric distressing and slight rip.
  • On the back right side there is a darker diagonal blaster mark with some fabric distressing and slight rip.

  • The belt is constructed from a black, non-textured, leather, or leather-like material.
  • Approximately 2" (50.8 mm) in width, up to 2.5" (63.5 mm) is acceptable.
  • There are no loops on the belt.
  • A single large snap or rivet is visible approximately 1" (25.4 mm) from the buckle.
    • The belt may be worn with the snap to the right or left of the buckle.
  • The buckle is constructed from a horizontally brushed metal, or metal looking material.
  • The buckle size is approximately 2.6" (66.7 mm) high and 4.15" (104.5 mm) wide by 0.5" (12.7 mm) radius on the rounded corners.
  • Buckle is adorned with an unnotched Imperial Code Disk at the center.
    • Please refer to the Imperial Buckle reference page for information on accurate and inaccurate style buckles.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Belt is made of leather.
  • Belt has a groove at the top and bottom edge along the length of the belt.
  • Buckle has a slight horizontal curve.
  • Leather can be lightly distressed with scratches and stains that emulate aged dry blood.
  • The buckle is scratched and distressed appropriately to remove shine and emulate attacks.

  • Fabric is a medium weight suiting material exactly matching the tunic.
    • Cavalry Twill or a Gabardine style weave is most accurate.
  • Fabric is heavily distressed and appropriately aged including stains that emulate blaster shots and/or aged dry blood.
  • Pockets are acceptable, although must not be visible with the tunic on.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • On each leg, darker diagonal blaster marks roughly the length of the panel are present.
  • Fabric distressing and rips are present.

  • Knee-high black, riding style, lace-less, smooth non-textured, leather or leather-like material.
  • There are no buckles, snap tabs, or decoration.
    • A top adjustment strap may be present.
  • The there are no center seams on the front shaft of the boot.
  • Boots have conservative heels.
  • A single stretch panel or zipper may be present; they are to be hidden on the inner part of the boot shaft.
    • Not visible from the front, side or back.
  • The top of the boots may be flat or Spanish Style, but not Cowboy or Super Hero (pointed at the front) style.
    • A small V-shaped notch may be present on the back of the boots top.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Boots are made of leather and may have hidden zippers.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Exact replicas of English riding (dress) boots, German marching boots, or Equestrian boots.
  • Boots do not have a top adjustment strap on the outside of the boots.
  • Boots to have a flat top.
  • The straps are set slightly to the rear with the tabs facing the rear.
  • Boots can be distressed with scratches and stains that emulate aged dry blood.
  • The outsole/heel may be two tone black/brown.

  • Black, wrist length gloves constructed of a smooth, non-textured leather or leather-like material.
  • Enclosed fingers.
  • No buckles, straps, etc.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Gloves have a plain back and no visible adornments.
  • Gloves are made of leather.
  • Gloves end just past the wrist.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Gloves have a notch centered in the edge below the palm.
    • Slit may be straight or rounded.
  • Gloves are distressed with scratches and stains that emulate aged dry blood.
  • Gloves are OPTIONAL if hands feature zombie like skin that matches the face.




Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.

  • See the Imperial Rank Bar page for a list of allowed ranks.
  • Rank consists of colored plastic tiles mounted on a single or double metal or metal looking bar(s).
  • Worn on the left side of the tunic over the heart, aligned with the code cylinder pocket.
  • Each bar is approximately 1" (25.4 mm) to 1.25" (31.75 mm) in height.
  • Length is determined by chosen rank.
  • Rank tile dimensions and spacing are appropriate and proportional to the sizing of the bar to allow for even spacing from each other and the border of the bar:
    • Rogue One/Solo rank tile dimensions are approximately 0.59" (15 mm) wide, 0.83" (21 mm) tall and 0.13" (3.2 mm) deep.
    • Mandalorian rank tile dimensions are approximately 0.5" (12.7 mm) width x 0.75" (19 mm) height x 0.13" (3.2 mm) deep.
    • Rank tile sizes must all be of one or the other — not to be intermixed.
    • Please note that final dimensions of the bar may be proportional to the wearer.
  • Rank bar corners are a hard 90-degree angle or slightly rounded.
  • Rank tiles are translucent, rectangular, positioned side by side in a vertical orientation, and evenly spaced.
  • Color, quantity, and combinations of the tiles/bars are determined by rank, and are appropriate to uniform type/color as supported by licensed reference.
  • Rank bar and tiles are weathered and may be broken.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Rank consists of colored plastic push buttons (with white to off white insert) mounted on a metal bar.

  • Between 1 to 4 Code Cylinders per costume may be worn.
  • No more than 2 code cylinders per pocket.
  • Dosimeter style: True Dosimeter style with brass or silver clip and blue top.
  • If only one is worn, it is on the left side.
  • Heavy weathering and distressing are present.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Only real or replica dosimeters are used.
