Wilhuff Tarkin is one of the most powerful individuals in the Galactic Empire. A Grand Moff who shapes Imperial doctrine and was the driving force behind the creation of its key embodiment, the Death Star.


For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met.

The Imperial Officer Corps Defines additional, optional levels of costuming excellence. In the page below, requirements for Level 2 “Executor” are listed in blue. Requirements for Level 3 “Imperator” are listed in red.

  • The specific and distinct shade of “Olive green” used by most ultra-inexpensive Cosplay shops is not adequately close to the “Feldgrau” standard to achieve L2/L3 approval.”




This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.


Tarkin Hair.jpg Hair and Facial Features
  • Hair is grey with a receding hairline.
  • Eyes and cheekbones appear gaunt and darkened.
    • Either naturally or through makeup effects.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Facial appearance and hair match very closely to that of Peter Cushing in ANH.





ID tunic.jpg Tunic, Olive
  • Fabric is a medium weight suiting material exactly matching the pants.
    • Gabardine style weave is most accurate.
  • Tunic is double-breasted with a left over right closure on the tapered yoke.
  • Yoke comes up across the shoulder to the top shoulder seam.
  • The standing collar has square corners and is about 1.25" (31.8 mm) tall.
    • Collar closes snugly and includes a modesty panel behind closure.
    • Collar edges are closed with two eye hooks.
  • There are code cylinder pockets on both outside panels of the jacket from about half way between the top and bottom on the arm hole.
  • Sleeves are long, and without decoration, cuffs or buttons.
  • Sleeves contain 2 seams.
    • One along the bottom and one along the back.
  • Tunic is constructed with no top-stitching (stitches visible on the exterior surface of fabric)
  • Hook and eye fasteners on the uniform should not be visible.
  • ROTJ Line Officer tunics can have double-yokes down the front of the tunic, below the collar, as seen on Moff Jerjerrod's uniform.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • The specific and distinct shade of “Olive green” used by most ultra-inexpensive Cosplay shops is not adequately close to the “Feldgrau” standard to achieve L2/L3 approval.
  • There is a dart in the top centre of the tunic, this dart is between 2 inches (50.8mm) to the top of the code cylinder pocket in length.
  • There is a seam running the entire circumference of the tunic, dividing it along a line hidden by the uniform belt.
  • The back of the tunic has princess seams that run vertically and turn outward to intersect the arm-hole seam at the vertical center.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Tunic is secured on the right side by snaps or buttons.
    • Not hook and loop fastener (Velcro).
  • There is no top-stitching visible anywhere.
  • A lining is sewn in.

  • A white dress shirt is worn under the tunic.
  • The collar and sleeve cuffs are slightly visible, protruding from under the olive tunic.

  • Worn on the left side of the tunic over the heart.
  • Rank consists of colored plastic tiles mounted on metal bar or metal looking bar.
  • Each bar is 1" (25.4 mm) height.
    • Length is determined by the number of tiles.
  • Rank tile dimensions are 1/2" (12.7 mm)width x 3/4" (19 mm) height and about 1/8" (3.2 mm).
  • Tiles are mounted with 1/4" (6.4 mm) spaces between them.
  • Rank bar exactly matches the color pattern used in the film.
    • Six blue tiles on the top bar.
    • Three red, followed by three amber, on the bottom bar.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Rank Bar is consists of two separate strips, one atop the other, meeting together flush.
  • Rank consists of colored plastic push buttons mounted on a metal bar.

  • Four Code cylinders are worn on the uniform.
  • Optional Variations:
    • Modified: Silver "chalk holder" tube with a short clip. Top is colored Blue.
    • Dosimeter Style: True Dosimeter with correct clip and blue top.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Only real or replica dosimeters are used.





ID belt.jpg Belt
  • The belt is constructed from a non-textured leather or a leather-like material.
  • Approximately 2" (50.8 mm) in width, up to 3" (76.2 mm) is acceptable.
  • There are no loops on the belt.
  • A single large snap or rivet is visible approximately 1" (25.4 mm) from the buckle.
    • The belt may be worn with the snap to the right or left of the buckle.
  • The buckle is constructed from a horizontally brushed metal, or metal looking material.
  • The buckle size is approximately 2 ⅛" (66.7 mm) high and 4 ⅛" (104.5 mm) wide with 0.5" (12.7 mm) radius rounded corners.
  • Buckle is adorned with an Imperial Code Disk at the center.
    • Please refer to the Imperial Buckle reference page for information on accurate and inaccurate style buckles.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Belt is made of leather.
  • Snap is worn to the left of the wearer.
  • Buckle has a slight horizontal curve.





ID pants.jpg Jodhpur Trousers, Olive
  • Fabric is a medium weight suiting material exactly matching the tunic.
    • Gabardine style weave is most accurate.
  • Flared riding breeches are canon, with semi-stiff flares to the hip/thigh area.
  • Breeches are worn with boots.
  • Pockets are acceptable, although are not visible with the tunic on.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • The specific and distinct shade of “Olive green” used by most ultra-inexpensive Cosplay shops is not adequately close to the “Feldgrau” standard to achieve L2/L3 approval.





ID Officer Boots.jpg Officer Boots
  • Knee-high, black, riding style, lace-less, smooth non-textured, leather or leather-like material.
  • There are no buckles, snap tabs or decoration.
  • Boots have conservative heels.
  • A single stretch panel or zipper may be present, they are to be hidden on the inner part of the boot shaft.
    • Not visible from the front, side or back.
  • The top of the boots may be flat or Spanish Style, but not Cowboy or Super Hero (pointed at the front) style.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Boots do not have stretch panels or a zipper.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Boots are made of leather.
    • Not vinyl or PVC.
  • Exact replicas of English riding (dress) boots or Equestrian boots.
