This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.

  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.

Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.

Gc Helmet.png Imperial Ground Crew Helmet
  • Note: Helmet proportions are critical to construction. For specifics, please visit the Detachment.
  • Helmet is comprised of five main pieces: Dome, Eye Lens, Jawbone, (2) Ear Cups, and Fabric Liner
  • Helmet is glossy, or semi-glossy black.
  • Helmet may have light weathering.
  • Around the base of the Dome, there is a thin, raised lip that covers the entire perimeter of the base, including the Ear Cup wells.
  • On the front of the Dome are four round holes in a diamond pattern, aligned with the centerline of the helmet. These are 0.75" (18mm) in diameter, are 0.25" (6mm) deep, and have a flat bottom. The top and bottom holes are 2.375" (5.4cm) apart measured from the centerpoints. The left and right holes are 3" (7.5cm) apart measured from the centerpoints.
  • The Eye Lens is tinted transparent plastic that matches the curve of the Dome.
  • The Eye Lens is sufficiently dark enough to obscure wearer's eyes.
  • The Jawbone's top deck is recessed below the front lip.
  • Two small rectangular indents may be present near the front of the deck, but are not required.
  • The front edge of the Dome is roughly parallel to the top edge of the Jawbone when viewed from either the right or left sides
  • The bottom edge of the Jawbone is angled to be roughly parallel to the Ear Cups when viewed from either the left or right side.
  • The Jawbone has a circular cutout on each side where it meets the Ear Cups. The radius is approximately the same as the outer surface of the Ear Cups.
  • The Jawbone is joined to the outer edge of the Ear Cups. The Ear Cups do not overlap any surface of the Jawbone.
    • Ideally, there is a small, visible gap between the Ear Cups and the circular cutout of the Jawbone.
  • The Ear Cups are an oblong shape with circular ends.
    • Ear Cups have an outer ring on an oblong dome. At the bottom of each dome is a knob containing 12 evenly spaced, small grips.
      • Three indents are present on the front face of the knob in a triangular configuration radially around the centerpoint of the knob. The indents can have either a flat or a hemispherical bottom, and are uniform in size.
  • There is a fabric hood/liner attached to the inside of the helmet extending past the Ear Cups and the dome, matching the edges of the helmet. It can be black, faded black, or charcoal gray in color, and is of similar weight to the suit.
  • There are two silver male snaps under the Ear Cups near the Jawbone on each side.
  • A single snap cap is positioned on the front near the two snaps, which may be painted to match the color of the fabric. Painting is optional.
  • There may be a black adjustment strap at the back with a single silver adjustment buckle, but this is not required.

OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • The Eye Lens may retract upwards into the helmet.
