Mountain Troopers were a variant in the Stormtrooper Corps of the First Order. They were deployed to patrol the mountainous areas in and around Black Spire Outpost on the planet Batuu.



This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.


MT helmet.png Helmet
  • Gloss white and may be lightly weathered.
  • Visor is trimmed in silver along the lower edge.
  • Snout greeblie is painted silver.
  • “Frown” is painted black.
  • 3 wedge-shaped recesses on the outer edge of each mandible, painted black.
  • Raised area at the end of each mandible is painted silver.
  • Lenses are dark enough to obscure the costumer’s eyes.




Generic Balaclava.jpg Balaclava
  • A balaclava is a black head sock/hood that is worn under the helmet and is used primarily to hide any view of the wearer’s skin and/or facial hair.




DTNeckSealandApron.jpg Neckseal
  • Black with horizontal ribs.
  • Fitted to the wearer.
  • Conceals the neck.
  • If separate from the shirt, the neck seal bib has vertical ribbing and is the same color and material as the shirt.
    • A neck seal and bib with vertical ribbing attached to the shirt is acceptable.

  • Black ribbed material:
    • Horizontal ribbing on arms.
    • Vertical ribbing on torso.
  • A neck seal and bib with vertical ribbing attached to the shirt is acceptable.
  • The fitted neck seal and bib must meet the same criteria as the separate neck seal.





MT chest.png Chest Plate
  • Gloss white and may be lightly weathered.
  • Recess on the bottom right must be present and painted black.
  • Chest and back plate attach with shoulder straps and meets flush at the lower sides.
  • Buckle greeblies attached to upper chest plate.
  • White shoulder straps attach to the chest plate at the buckle.




MT back.png Back Plate
  • Gloss white and may be lightly weathered.
  • Back plate has a collar that extends upwards and tapers to the chest plate.
  • Chest and back plate meet flush at the sides.
  • Upper portion features vent detail with oblong indent in the upper left.
  • There is a raised circle detail on the center back.
  • There is a raised slot on each shoulder for the straps to fit into.
  • Shoulder straps affix to the chest plate at the buckle.





MT ab.png Abdomen Section
  • Gloss white and may be lightly weathered.
  • Inside the area on the right hand side is a raised rectangular greeblie with a smaller raised greeblie in the upper portion.
  • Central abdomen section has a raised square section with a raised plate, on the left side of the plate is one large ridged rectangle with nine raised ribs below.
  • Above the central section is a rectangle greeblie with a central vertical indent.
  • The left hand area contains a longer rectangular detail, painted black.
  • The rear has a central cover plate.





MT shoulders.png Shoulder Armor
  • Gloss white and may be lightly weathered.
  • Raised detail above the bottom edge of each bell.
  • Right shoulder bell is red from top of bell to just above the raised portion.




MT biceps.png Biceps
  • Bicep cover strips are raised and beveled with an added strip layer on top.
  • Gloss white and may be lightly weathered.




MT forearms.png Forearms
  • Gloss white and may be lightly weathered.
  • Each forearm has an inset rectangular greeblie with 9 indents.
  • The greeblies have 3 bolts appearing to attach them to the forearm.




TA Assault Tank Gloves.png Gloves and Hand Plates
  • Gloves:
    • Black gloves with black leather or leather-like material on the palm, thumb, and forefinger. The palm has 5 raised padded sections.
    • The black oval detail is aligned with the index finger of each hand.
    • Gloves extend underneath the forearm armor.
  • Hand Plates:
    • Gloss white and may be lightly weathered.
    • Roughly pentagonal in shape, with an oblong recess on the front edge.
    • Mounted securely to the back of the gloves.




MT belt.png Belt
  • Belt is white and made from webbing, approximately 3 inches (7.6 cm) high: 
    • Sewing two straps together to achieve the approximate height is acceptable.
  • Belt has five plastic boxes:
    • One wide center box with notched portion on the wearer’s left side.
    • Two medium boxes with top detail on either side of the center box.
    • Two standard boxes on either side of the medium boxes.
    • Boxes are gloss white and may be lightly weathered.




MT td.png Thermal Detonator
  • Gloss white and may be lightly weathered.
  • The horizontal thermal detonator is a circular canister with evenly spaced grooves extending to the end caps.
  • Thermal detonator is attached to a white plate the same height as the belt:
    • There are 2 identical belt boxes mounted to the plate on either side of the thermal detonator, for a total of 4.
    • The plate attaches to the belt in the rear, covering the belt closure.




MT tasset.png Tassets
  • White and may be lightly weathered.
  • Trapezoid-shaped, covering the left and right quarters of the body.
  • Made of a heavy fabric, such as duck cloth.
  • Extend from wearer’s belt to their midthigh.
  • Has two stitching details:
    • A smaller rectangular area in the top third of the tasset.
    • A larger trapezoidal area in the bottom two thirds, following the contour of the tasset.
  • One cloth-like pouch is mounted on the tasset, extending from the belt to about two thirds the way down the tasset.
  • Attaches behind the belt.





MT pouch.png Pouches
  • White and may be lightly weathered.
  • Two are present one on each side.
  • Each pouch has a flap closure.




MT trousers.png Trousers
  • Black cotton canvas/duck cloth material.
  • Jodhpur-style breeches that flare out above the knee.
  • May be lightly weathered.




MT shins.png Shin Armor
  • One piece knee/shin armor.
  • Gloss white and may be lightly weathered.
  • Shin plates have 3 sets of slots on either side for strapping.
  • Shin plates attach to boots with 4 white ribbed straps:
    • Top strap is aligned with top of the boot gaiter.
    • Top 3 straps are evenly spaced out.
    • Fourth strap has no loops dedicated to it. It wraps directly below the third.




MT spats.png Boot Spats
  • Gloss white and may be lightly weathered.
  • Connection point is concealed.
  • The boot gaiter covers the top of the spat.
  • Spats are symmetrical on either foot – there is no left or right-side spat.




TA Assault Tank Boots.png Boots
  • White and may be lightly weathered.
  • Black soles.
  • Boots have a low heel.




MT gaiters.png Gaiters
  • White fabric.
  • Runs from below the knee down to the ankle.
  • Boot does not show above the gaiter.
  • May be lightly weathered.




Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.


MT blaster.png Mountain Trooper Blaster
  • Based on a real or replica Sterling sub-machine gun, scratch-built, cast, 3D print or a modified commercial toy Stormtrooper blaster. It has an extended stock attached at the rear and an extended barrel.
  • Tactical flashlight (Surefire scout M300 or replica) mounted on right side of barrel.
  • Magazine is extended length.
  • Power cylinder is larger with 2 outer cylinders and 2 smaller central cylinders.
  • Scope is a M38 1943 version.





ST E22-LG.jpg E-22 Blaster
  • Based on a real or replica Sterling sub-machine gun, scratch-built, cast, 3D print or a modified commercial toy Stormtrooper blaster. It has an extended stock attached at the rear and an extended front housing with second lower barrel.
  • Tactical flashlight (Surefire scout M300 or replica) mounted on right side of barrel.
  • Magazine is extended length.
  • Power cylinder is larger with 2 outer cylinders and 2 smaller central cylinders.
  • Scope is a M38 1943 version.
  • Scope rail is fitted onto rail blocks, one inside the rear sight and the other at the front end of the rail.
  • There are 3 swivel studs fitted, one on the rear stock and one on each side of the front barrel housing.
  • Optional:
    • Sling is 25mm webbing strap that is adjustable using a silver 25mm 3 fixed bar webbing buckle
    • Sling is fitted with Talon quick release 25mm swivel or replica
    • Red lights fitted on both sides of the rear housing, Hengstler fitted with a red light for the 3 forward tubes and 2 small red lights fitted into the rear barrel housing under the torch. The lights are permanent and are non-flashing or pulsed.
