Context: Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace
The apprentice of Darth Sidious, this Iridonian Zabrak heralded the return of the Sith in a flash of red and black.


For 501st membership, only the requirements in black need to be met.

The Sith Lord Detachment defines additional, optional levels of costuming excellence. In the page below, items listed under “For level two certification” are recommended features that will greatly improve the quality of the costume. These items are not required for 501st membership, but are highly recommended. Items listed under “For level three certification” are some of the highest level accuracy features for those who strive to be screen accurate. Please visit the SLD site for more specific details.



This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.


SL maul face.jpeg Face and Head
  • Ten horns. One on top, seven crowning the head, and one on each temple.
  • Each horn is unique in shaped, approximately one and one-half inches long, the color resembles aged bone.
  • The head is clean shaven.
    • A bald cap may also be employed with minimal visible seams.
  • There is a small, silver, ball-stud earring worn in the upper part of the left ear.
  • Facial paint is red and black with a matte finish:
    • The ears (inside and out), behind the ears, around the eyes, and neck are completely black.
    • The lower lip is red with three black accents.
    • The bridge of the nose is red with a vertical black pattern in the center.
    • The black section around the eyes covers and extends above the outer half of each eyebrow.
    • The two “lines” (that connect the inner eyebrows to the two horns off the center horn) are vertical, they wind in an “S” fashion, after which they become vertical again just before connecting to the black tear-drop areas surrounding the two horns.
    • The teeth are treated as if molted and decayed with black and brown tooth enamels.
    • Masks are NOT allowed for this character.

OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • A thin band of trim where the scalp meets the horn.
  • The top (rear) horn is the longest at approximately two inches.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Makeup matches reference from Naboo Hangar reveal or Promotional head shots.
  • Head is clean shaven or indistinguishably blended into the wearers skin.




SL maul basetunic.jpeg Tunic
  • Black linen or fabric with an equivalent appearance and weight.
  • The collar is ribbed with four quilted lines running around the neck to where the Tunic closes in front. It closes in a “V” fashion at the base of the neck and does not overlap.
  • There is no zipper or attachment device visible when worn.
  • The length of the tunic extends to just above the knees.
  • The side seams are open from the waist down.
  • There is no open seam on the backside.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • The Base Tunic is linen, silk noil, or a blend.
  • The side seams are open from just below the arms.




SL maul sithrobe.jpeg Sith Robe
  • Worn over the Base Tunic, and made from lightweight black silk noil, Tussah silk, or fabric with an equivalent appearance and weight.
  • The one-piece sleeves are eased and tucked at the shoulder, and bloused to just below the elbow. The shoulder seam extends past the shoulder.
  • The forearms are pleated, quilted for a tailored fit to the arm, and extend to the wrist.
  • The side seams are open from the waist down.
  • Lower rear panel has a rounded bottom edge and extends to the mid-thigh.
  • Two front panels extend to below the knees and are straight cut.
  • Two narrow panels (on top of the front panels) extend to knee level.
  • Robe tapers towards waist and closes under the belt.
  • Lower rear panel overlaps the front panel around waist level.
  • The wider front panels end at the top of the boot.
  • Two narrow panels are made of the same material as the tabard.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • The lower panel formed in the rear overlaps the front panels slightly around waist level.
  • The front panels (not the narrow ones) extend to the top of the boot.
  • The two narrow panels are made of the same material as the Tabard.
  • The sleeves are pleated at the shoulders.




SL maul tabbards.jpeg Tabard
  • Worn over the Sith Robe, made from black crinkle/boiled silk or fabric with an equivalent appearance and weight, and wraps around the neck.
  • Extends to mid-thigh and secured in place by the belt.
  • The tabards do not cross or overlap the Base Tunic collar.
  • The loin cloth overlaps approximately half of each end of the tabard and wraps around the neck.




SL maul gloves.jpeg Gloves
  • Made of black leather or leather-like material in a matte finish.
  • Void of any distinctive stitching.
  • Gauntlet cuff extends to approximately mid-forearm length.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • The gloves are leather.




SL maul belt.jpeg Belt
  • Waist high belt made of black leather or leather-like material constructed in two pieces:
  • The main belt is wider wide in the front center and tapers to become narrower at the sides/hips.
  • Closure in the back under a square belt keeper of the same material.
  • Atop the wide belt are four strips which are anchored with black rivets located just before the sides/hips.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • The belt is leather.




Maul Loincloth.jpg Loin Cloth
  • Knee lengh and attached under the belt and is made the same material as the tabard.
  • Centered under the belt and tapers outward with a bow along the bottom edge.




Lightsaberclip.jpg Lightsaber Clip
  • A rectangular Covertec is attached to the belt on the wearer's right hip.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Original model Covertec (Model:QS-U3JP-NJQW)




SL maul saber.jpeg Dual-bladed lightsaber
  • Each half is identical and features a machined aluminum finish with removable blades.
  • The saber includes four red knobs, machined pattern, tapering to the emitters.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • The lightsaber is capable of being belt worn (detachable blade or no blade).
  • The lightsaber is a 1:1 scale of the lightsaber used in the film.
  • There is only one device on the underside used to mount the lightsaber into the Covertec clip

  • Made from a black fabric similar to that of the Base Tunic.
  • They are baggy to allow for blousing around the knees.




SL maul boots.jpeg Boots
  • Black leather or leather-like material, mid-calf height.
  • Has a double “V” stitched onto the top section of the boot.
  • There is a part of the boot that acts as a protector and grip that wraps onto the the toe section of the boot from the inside.
  • Boots may not have visible silver/reflective areas.
  • Logos or brands must be obscured.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • The boots are leather.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Frank Thomas models Titan, Voyager, Apollo, or Tempest (modified to meet the above guidelines) or custom boots that replicate the original Titan Touring Boot model 101 used on screen.




Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.


SL maul eye.jpeg Sith Eyes
  • The contacts are fiery yellow transitioning into a brilliant red.
    • While considered an essential part of this character, the contact lens requirement will be waived for 501st acceptance if the applicant cannot wear contact lenses for health related reasons. All persons utilizing contact lenses are encouraged to first see their optometrist for a fitting.

Maulcloak.jpg Hooded Robe
  • The hood, yoke, and sleeves are made of black wool or other natural fabric
  • The body of the robe is made from black silk or other natural fabric of comparable appearance.
  • The hood is large and falls down the back without coming to a point.
  • Belled sleeves end at the elbows.
  • In front, the yoke angles down from the shoulders, coming to a point at the bottom of the sternum.
  • The robe body is pleated and floor length.
  • The pleats are ironed, not sewn in place.




SL Maul Wristcom.jpg Wrist Communicator
  • Communicator is worn over the gauntlet.
  • 3/4 circle left open on the underside.
  • Greeblies include but are not exclusive to: Silver cap style nuts, gold button head rivets/screws, attachment plates, gold and silver jewels.
  • Communicator is metal or quality painted resin.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Jewel greebles are grouped as follows: 9 silver, 6 gold, 9 silver and evenly spaced across the span.
