Description: 181st Fighter Wing, Dress Uniform: Dark Gray
Prefix: TI
Detachment: Jolly Roger Squadron
Context: Star Wars Expanded Universe.

The 181st Imperial Fighter Group is an elite unit that served in the Imperial navy, handpicked by Baron Soontir Fel and feared throughout the galaxy as the best TIE pilots in the Empire. Their elite status is denoted by distinctive red stripes sewn onto their uniforms and painted onto the solar wing arrays of their TIE/In Interceptor series starfighters.

For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met.

While the Jolly Roger Squadron does not have any detachment specific costume certification programs, some parts of the costume below may be shared with other detachments that do. Features listed in blue or red are not required for 501st approval, but are noted here for those interested in these additional details.

This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.

  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.

Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.

TI dressuniformgray tunic.jpg Tunic,Dark Gray
  • Fabric is a medium weight suiting material exactly matching the pants and hat.
    • Cavalry Twill or a Gabardine style weave is most accurate.
    • The most accurate color is "Feldgrau or "Field grey" (grey variant).
  • Tunic is double-breasted with a left over right closure on the tapered yoke.
  • Yoke comes up across the shoulder to the top shoulder seam.
    • The standing collar has square corners, is about 1.25" (3,18 cm) to 2" tall and closes snugly.
    • The wearer's neck must not be visible between the closed collar edges.
      • A modesty panel behind the collar closure is recommended to help this but is not required.
    • Red blood stripes 1" (2,54 cm) to 1.5" (3,81 cm) wide extend from the base of the collar to the wrist. A second pair of red stripes 1" (25.4mm) to 1.5" (3,81 cm) wide appears on either side of the collar closure and are offset from the shoulder stripes.
  • There are code cylinder pockets on both outside panels of the jacket from about half way between the top and bottom on the arm hole.
  • Tunic has long sleeves which are without decoration, cuffs or buttons.
  • Sleeves contain 2 seams
    • One along the bottom and one along the back.
    • Collar stripes are the same width as the sleeve stripes.
  • Tunic is constructed with no top-stitching (stitches visible on the exterior surface of fabric)
  • Fasteners on the uniform should not be visible.
  • Uniform is to be pressed and free of a wrinkled appearance.

OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • There is a dart in the top center of the tunic; this dart is between 2" (50.8mm) and 3" (76.2mm) in length.
  • There is a seam running the entire circumference of the tunic, dividing it along a seam line, which should be hidden by the uniform belt.
    • The front placket of the tunic may omit this seam only if the uniform belt is worn in a manner which conceals the omission.
  • The back of the tunic has princess seams that run vertically and turn outward to intersect the arm-hole seam at the vertical center.

TI dressuniformgray rank.jpg Rank Bar
  • See the Imperial Rank Bar page for more information.
  • Rank consists of colored plastic tiles mounted on metal (or metal looking) bar.
  • Worn on the left side of the tunic over the heart, aligned with the code cylinder pocket.
  • Each bar is approximately 1" (25.4mm) to 1.25" (31.75mm) in height.
  • Length is determined by chosen rank
  • Rank tile dimensions and spacing are appropriate and proportional to the sizing of the bar to allow for even spacing from each other and the border of the bar:
    • Rogue One/Solo rank tile dimensions are approximately 15mm wide, 21mm tall and 3.2mm deep.
    • Mandalorian rank tile dimensions are approximately 1/2" (12.7mm) wide, 3/4" (19mm) tall and 1/8" (3.2mm) deep.
    • Rank tile sizes must all be of one or the other (of the above options) - Not to be intermixed.
  • Final dimensions of the rank bar should be proportional to the wearer.
  • Rank tiles are translucent, rectangular, positioned side by side in a vertical orientation and evenly spaced.
  • Color quantity and combinations are determined by rank, and are appropriate to uniform type. For example:
    • No 181st officer had orange rank tiles.
    • No 181st officer had a single-row rank bar.
    • No 181st officer wore a black uniforms... etc.
