In the Star Wars: Rebels series, Baron Valen Rudor steps into the spotlight, assuming roles as both an Imperial TIE fighter pilot and a distinguished baron within the Galactic Empire. Throughout his exploits, Rudor engages in numerous skirmishes against the Rebel forces, demonstrating his unwavering loyalty to the Empire.



This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.


Valen Rudor Rebels Helmet.jpg Helmet
  • Animated style TIE Pilot Helmet.
  • Helmet is Matte or Semi-Gloss black.
  • Light weathering is acceptable.
  • Appearance of a red stripe in the middle of the mohawk.
    • Red stripe is approximately 0.80" (20mm) to 1" (25mm) wide.
    • Stripe starts above the trident, ending at the top of the rectangular detail at the bottom of the mohawk.
  • Two white stripes or “tears” are present on the helmet.
  • Lenses are flat and dark gray in color.
  • Two (2) white Imperial cogs, approximately 2.75" (69mm) in diameter, located on both sides of the mohawk.
  • There is a gray cylindrical greeblie on each ear.
  • There are two (2) small round greeblies in the trident indentations on the front of the helmet.
  • There are no visible screws or fasteners.
  • Face plate has a symmetrical appearance.
  • There are five (5) teeth (same as Original Trilogy TIE Pilot) on the face.
  • Rear of helmet has a rectangle detail near the bottom of the mowhawk.
  • There is no rubber trim on the bottom opening of the helmet.
  • The vocoder has a middle raised section and is painted black.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Matte black painted trim, approximately .75" (19mm) on the underside of the helmet that stops on both ear cups.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • There is rubber trim on the underside of the helmet that stops on both ear cups.
  • Weathering is present.

  • Black Ribbed Hoses with adequate length from the helmet hose ports to the upper chest box hose ports.
  • Black Ribbed Hoses have approximately a 1.25" (32mm) diameter.

  • Smooth or textured finish (non-ribbed).
  • Black in color.




Generic Balaclava.jpg Balaclava
  • A balaclava is a black head sock/hood that is worn under the helmet and is used primarily to hide any view of the wearer’s skin and/or facial hair.

  • The balaclava is open forehead to chin, to show the face of the wearer.
  • Balaclava has a strip of 8–12 panels in the middle that starts from the forehead to the center back.
  • Presence of ear cups / ear pieces on both sides of the balaclava.
  • Black in color.




Valen Rudor Rebels Flightsuit.jpg Flight suit
  • One-piece dark gray or black coverall / jumpsuit / flight suit.
  • Presence of a front invisible zipper hidden by the center seam is allowed.
  • Mandarin collar is approximately 2" (50 mm) tall, fully enclosed.
    • Collar may feature one (1) or two (2) vertical lines in the anterior aspect, which are represented by stitched lines.
    • Collar may be closed tightly by including a modesty panel behind the collar closure.
  • A white embroidered or vinyl Imperial cog emblem, on a black background, is present on both shoulders.
    • Emblems are approximately 2.75" (70mm) in diameter.
  • Both sleeves have a cargo pocket on the bicep below the cog emblem.
    • The pockets have a small chevron flap.
    • There is an appearance of a stitched vertical line in the middle of the pocket.
  • The suit has a communications pad window on the left sleeve, below the cargo pocket. This comprises a trapezoidal piece with a flat side at the cuff and a diagonal side (sloping forward) at the forearm.
    • The trapezoidal piece has a width of 5.5" (140mm). It is 8" (175mm) at the rear and 4.5" (120mm) in the front.
    • It has a 2" (50mm) square window centrally located.
    • There is no flap at the top (diagonal) side of the piece.
    • Size might vary slightly to match specific communications pad.
    • Communications pad pocket may also be approximately 4.5" (114mm) x 5.5" (140mm) rectangle rather than trapezoid shape. Both are acceptable.
  • Appearance of red stripes on both sides of the jumpsuit.
    • The first stripe begins at the armpit and continues down to the bottom of the leg.
    • The second stripe begins at the wrist and continues over the arm pocket, behind the patch emblem, to the shoulder seam.
  • There is a horizontal seam or a double-topstitched line that runs across the upper chest, but does not extend around the back.
  • Two (2) leg pockets with chevron flaps, similar in proportion to the right arm sleeve pocket.

  • Flight suit is not loose or baggy.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Pockets have thin padding inside to give the appearance of fullness.




Rebels compad.png Imperial Communications Pad
  • Square communications pad with buttons and detailing matching the visual reference, approximately 2" (50mm) wide by 2" (50mm) tall.
  • Communications pad has a border approximately 0.0625" (1.57mm) wide and includes three (3) rectangles:
    • A black, vertical rectangle approximately 0.75" (19mm) by 1.625" (41mm).
    • A white, horizontal rectangle approximately 0.875" (22mm) by 0.5" (12.7mm).
    • A black, vertical rectangle approximately 0.875" (22mm) by 1" (25.4mm).
  • Painted black, except by the smallest upper rectangle which is painted white.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Communications pad may be contoured slightly to wrap around the arm.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Communications pad is unlit.




Rebels gloves.png Gloves
  • Black, leather or leather-like, enclosed fingered, non-textured, fitted gauntlet style. (Normal leather grain/texture/lines are acceptable)
  • No buckles, straps, or decorative stitching.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Gloves are made of leather.
OPTIONAL Level three certification (if applicable):
  • Gauntlets slightly flair-out, upward from the wrist to the mid-forearm.
  • Gauntlets to be continuous with no gusseted panel.




Rebels armour.png Armor
  • Animated stylized armor, matte or semi-gloss black, matching the helmet finish. Light weathering is acceptable.
  • Has a raised square in the front center to mount the chest box.
  • Black nylon webbing, cord or elastic is allowed to aid in the snug fit of the armor on the wearer’s sides.
  • Back Armor has a raised square 6" (152mm) high by 8" (203mm) wide.
  • Shoulder straps should be flat, non-ridged with a button on the back of the strap to simulate a hold-down screw.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Armor is snug fit with no visible webbing, cord, or elastic on the wearer’s side.




Rebels chestbox.png Chestbox
  • Animated style Chestbox in matte or semi-gloss black, matching the helmet finish. Boxed shape, consists of a tapered box on top of a cylinder.
  • Approximate dimensions are:
    • Upper box area: 7.5" (190.5mm) by 7.5" (190.5mm) by 2.5" (63.5mm).
    • Top of upper box: 3.375" (85.72mm) with a 10-degree taper on top, and bottom.
    • Cylinder section: 2.25" (57.15mm) in diameter.
  • On the cylinder, there is a front facing facet 2.75" (69.85mm) from the wearer’s left side
    • The front facing facet measures 0.825" (21.0mm) height by 2.0" (50.0mm) width
    • Includes two (2) dark gray circles 0.375 (9.5mm) and 0.625" (15.8mm).
  • There are two (2) dark gray circles on each side of the cylinder.
  • The Chestbox is required to have the same configurations as seen in the photo.
  • The box has five (5) detail pieces, four (4) larger pieces arranged in a square and one (1) smaller piece outside the square.
    • There is a 0.0625" (1.58mm) to 0.125" (3.18mm) thick white pinstripe border around the four (4) square detail pieces.
    • The size of the larger pieces is 1" (25.4mm) in length and width and 0.5" (.125mm) thick.
    • The size of the smaller piece outside the pinstripe border is 0.75 (19mm) in length and width and 0.5" (.125mm) thick, and blue in color.
    • The acceptable color formation is Dark Gray, White (upper row, left to right), and Black, Blue (lower row, left to right).
  • There are 3 rocker switches below the round indicator lights.
    • The rocker configuration is white, gray, gray.
    • Rockers do not have dots on the lower edge.
    • The rockers are standard style.




TIE Pilot Rebels Belt.jpg Belt
  • The belt is constructed from non-textured leather or a leather-like material.
  • Approximately 2" (50mm) wide.
  • Belt may have two lines on either outer edge or be smooth.
  • There are no loops on the belt.
  • A single large snap or rivet is visible approximately 1" (25.4mm) from the buckle.
  • The belt is worn with the snap to the right of the wearer.
  • The buckle is constructed from a horizontally brushed metal, or metal looking material.
  • The buckle is octangular and slightly larger than the belt with square-edged corners.
  • The buckle has a circle in the center that can be impressed or decal.




Rebelsshin.png Shin Armor
  • Designed to sit over the boots, with no visible means of attachment.
  • Tubular in shape, matte or semi-gloss black in color, matching the helmet finish.
  • A raised black horizontal strip is located at the top of the external face of the armor. There is a white or gray square (buckle) in the middle of the strip.




Rebboot.png Boots
  • Boots are above ankle height and made of leather or leather-like material.
  • Chelsea style boots are allowed.
  • Black color with a dark gray sole.
  • Free of laces, decorative stitching, buckles on the instep, or any other embellishments.
  • Small U-shaped elastic sections on both sides of the ankle, are acceptable, but should be covered by the shin armor.
  • Flat sole without heel.

  • Height of sole shall not exceed ¼ inch (6mm).




Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.


Valen Rudor No Bucket.jpg Face
  • A balaclava should always be worn when the helmet is not on.
    • Only an open-faced balaclava with the 8–12 panels on top and the ear cups / ear pieces may be used.
  • Face is clean shaven.




SWR E11 Animated.jpeg Animated Style E-11 Blaster
  • A simplified version of the E-11 blaster.
  • Scratch-built, or a modified commercial toy Stormtrooper blaster.
