Detachment: Sovereign Protectors
Context: Star Wars: The Last Jedi
The Praetorian Guards served as elite personal bodyguards of Supreme Leader Snoke. They were trained to protect the Supreme Leader by meeting any threat with a ferocious response. Clad in red armor and robes, the Praetorian Guard's appearance deliberately echoed that of the Emperor's royal guardsmen.


For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met.

The Sovereign Protectors Detachment has defined additional optional levels of costuming excellence.


This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


PRATGUARD helmet.jpg Helmet Configuration 1
  • Costumer is only required to own one helmet for CRL approval.
  • Finished in crimson red gloss that matches the colors of the entire costume.
  • A black visor or mesh obscures the wearer's eyes.

Dome

  • Includes a smooth round dome. This dome extends slightly over the entirety of the helmet.

Front

  • The face plate of the helmet comes to an angle at the front bottom.
  • The face plate of the helmet has slits that run the entity of the helmet that are no more than 2 mm apart.
    • There can be 3 internal support pillars visible in this section, these pillars do not intersect with the groves of the face plate, they sit behind them.
  • The black "vision" section of the helmet ends at the costumers chin.

Sides

  • The helmet is recessed from the face plate.
  • There is a recessed square detail that sits flush next to the face plate.

Back

  • On the back there are 6 oval details (3 on each side) present on the back of the helmet. Each detail is fanned outwards from the one above it.
  • There is a circular extension that sits off center to the right of the dome, the circle extension is present inside the groove, and half of the circle extends off the lip of the dome.

Back

  • There is a lip on the back of the dome.
  • On the underside of the lip at the back of the helmet there are 2 small square recessed details present on either side of the helmet for a total of 4.
  • There is a small circular detail on the back right of the helmet. The circle extends halfway down from the bottom of the helmet. The lip of the helmet extends downward with the detail.
    • There can be a raised square on the the lower back section of the helmet, this has a recessed circular detail on the right-hand side of the square.

  • Costumer is only required to own one helmet for CRL approval.
  • Finished in crimson red gloss that matches the colors of the entire costume.
  • A black visor or mesh obscures the wearer's eyes.

Dome

  • The dome has a rounded top and front; the back is flat. The dome extends past the base on the sides and back.

Front

  • The front of the helmet has a beak that ends at a flat point.
  • There are slits extending the full length of the front of the helmet face plate.
  • The face plate ends at the costumers ears.
    • The slits are not present on the collar which ends at the side of the head.

BACK

  • The back of the helmet has an arching slope and has the following details:
  • Top has a recessed rectangle.
    • Center has a out circle on the right.
    • Bottom has 4 lines (2 on each side) on the collar area.

  • Costumer is only required to own one helmet for CRL approval.
  • Finished in crimson red gloss that matches the color of the entire costume.
  • A black visor or mesh obscures the wearer's eyes.

Dome

  • The top of the helmet consists of a bowl shape that is straight cut in the front and extends past the base, this "cap" sits atop the base.
  • The "cap" is approximately 1/3 larger than the base helmet.
  • There is a small lip on the domed underside that is progressively larger as it wraps around the backside.

Front

  • The face plate has slits in the front center. These slits run the length of the plate.
    • There can be 3 internal support pillars visible in this section, these pillars sit behind the vision slits.

Sides

  • At the right and left sides of the helmet, there is a single vertical slit.
  • On both sides of the helmet there are two thin rectangular cut outs present on the lower rear section of the helmet just behind the slit.
    • The top rectangle is shorter than the bottom.
  • There is a half circle just below the beginning of the two rectangles.

Back

  • There is a beveled rectangle at the back top of the helmet. Inside of this is a raised rectangle with an oval shape inset on the right hand side. Inside the rectangle there are two cut out ovals, one atop each other on the left.
  • Inside the beveled rectangle there is a circular button on the bottom right hand side.





Prat guard chestandback.jpg Chest Armor
  • Upper chest includes two channeled lines and these lines are one on top of the other.
  • The top center of the chest has a section cut out of the top of the armor.
  • There is a rectangular greeblie on the chest plate with a blue square on the right-hand side.
  • On the costumer's right of the greeblie there is a recessed vertical rectangle on the chest plate, inset with detailing which can include a small square and upside down "U" shape.

Backplate

  • At the center of the back, there are 5 slat details recessed into the top section of the back plate.
  • The top of each shoulder has a raised extension on it.
  • At the top of the back plate, there are a sequence of 4 rectangular details, **The right are shorter than the ones on the left.
  • There is a coin detail on the top right shoulder, and includes a circle with four cuts and a small button in the center.
  • At the bottom of the back plate, there are two circular details that are placed on either side that accompany a channel that runs at an inward angle from the step details.

Back Lower

  • There are two sections that extend downward from the back plate.
  • Details are identical on both plates and progressively get further in from one another.




PRATGUARD ARM together.jpg Arm Plates
  • Each arm is comprised of a total of 10 sections.
  • The top part sits above the shoulder bells and is attached to the backplate via a small peg.
  • There are shoulder bells at the top of each arm, these are flat on the bottom and rounded on the sides.
  • 1st Left arm segment at the front has a vertical channel that runs down the center of the segment. Near the bottom, there is a small upside down "L" that extends off of the channel. There is a small square detail that sits near the "L", that should line up with the edges of the "L". At the back of the arm, there are two small squares that sit flush with the rest of the arm and sit just above the bottom of the segment. These details are mirrored on the Right arm.
  • 2nd Left arm segment has an off-center cut-out line that runs near the seam of the arm. This has a square recess that extends off the bottom of the channel. Above the square recess, there is an additional square that tapers inward toward the top. At the rear of the piece, there are two rectangular channels, present at the very bottom of the piece. The rectangular section on the left has a small square channel that extends upward at the upper right. There is a thinner, separate recessed square located above the right rectangle and these details are mirrored on the Right arm.
  • 3rd Left arm segment is smooth in front. At the back of the piece there are 2 separate grooves that extend downward from the top and intersect with a circle detail at the elbow of the wrist. The Right arm is completely plain with no detail.
  • 4th left arm section is smooth in front, at the back there are two circle details of different size, the outer circle is larger than the inner detail. On the back inner corner of the section, there is a rectangular circle that extends slightly around the corner of the piece. These details are mirrored on the Right arm.
  • 5th Left arm segment has no details on it, and is mirrored on the Right arm.
  • 6th arm segment has a wide channel that runs down the center. This part has a half-octagonal extension that extends inward from the channel. There are no details on the back of the piece. These details are mirrored on the opposite arm.
  • 7th Left arm segment has an oval detail near the seam at the front of the piece, on the inner side of the piece there is an additional oval detail near the front. There are no details on the back of this piece. These details are mirrored on the right arm.
  • 8th left arm segment has a groove that extends from the bottom inner part of the wrist, halfway down the front of the wrist. This line extends further upward, and this groove wraps around to the rear. The rear of the wrist mirrors the front and ends the line at the inner part of the wrist. These details are mirrored on the Right arm.





PRATGUARD stomach.jpg Abdomen Armor
  • Red in color and matches the rest of the armor.
  • The top of this section is hidden under the chest armor.
  • There is a horizontal channel separating the top and bottom portion.
  • There are channel sections separating each piece and mirrored on both sides.
  • The center front creates an hour glass shape. The back has a matching shape.
  • The side sections on the outside of the hourglass shape have a arching U shaped cut that is mirrored on either side.
  • If there is an opening it is concealed in the back slit of the hourglass.

  • The shirt is a form-fitting red polyester material.
    • Neoprene is the most accurate fabric.
    • If this item has the original coating on the fabric then it is overlaid over the fabric and has a raised shiny crackle effect.

Collar 1:

  • Mandarin style collar with a thin strip of trim at the top. The trim has no coating.
  • The costumer wears a balaclava inside the shirt collar to conceal all skin.

Collar 2:

  • There is no collar present and the neck and head are designed as a inset, permanent balaclava.
  • The balaclava is made from the same fabric as the shirt.




PRATGUARD pants.jpg Pants

The pants are a form-fitting black polyester material.

    • Neoprene is the most accurate fabric.
    • If this item has the original effect on the fabric then it is overlaid over the fabric and has a raised shiny crackle effect.




Pratorian skirt.jpg Skirt
  • The skirt is red in color matching all other sections of the costume and made of a wool or wool- like material.
  • The skirt is long and near floor length and is comprised of 4 long rectangle panels that are double-sided.
  • The sides of the skirts are top stitched near the sides of the skirt.
  • The bottom of the skirts have no top stitching.
  • The rear panel is wider and has a center seam.

  • The Shins are a crimson red that matches all other components.
  • There is a knee plate and ankle component.
  • At the top of the outside of both shins is a flat masking plate across the seam.
  • The left shin has two rectangular extensions on it.




Pratorian shoe1.jpg Boots
  • Red leather or leather-like material.
  • A flat black sole is most accurate however a conservative heel is permitted. *If a zipper is present it is located at the inside of the boot. This zipper can be covered with a leather strip.




Pratorian gloves1.jpg Gloves
  • Red leather or leather-like material.
  • There is a minimum of two quilted sections across the top of the palm, but three is most accurate.
  • The quilts should extend past the bottom of the arm armor.




Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.

  • This weapon can only be used by the helmet configuration 2.
  • This weapon has a long staff and a blade at the end.

  • This weapon can only be used by the helmet configurations 1 and 2.
  • The whip can be made in two forms, seperated as a whip or a single piece that resembles a sword.

  • This weapon can only be used with helmet configuration 1.




Pratorian TwinBlades.jpg Weapon: Vibro-arbir Blades
  • This weapon can only be used with helmet configuration 3.
  • This weapon can be built as a single piece with a blade on both ends or separated into two pieces.
