These proud troops are assigned to Imperial frontier worlds where they rely on their training, toughness and specialized equipment to expand Imperial rule.


For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met.



This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.




Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.


Helmet main.jpg Helmet
  • See the Range Trooper Helmet detail page.
  • Helmet is flat white.
  • Helmet dome is flat white and has a near flat forehead shape, which is slightly curved when viewed from the side profile.
  • Various recessed black lines run along parts of the dome.
  • Underneath each eye is a black recessed groove that extends to the top of the cheek tube.
  • Helmet lens is a gold or near-gold reflective material, concealing wearer’s eyes.
  • A black recessed groove detail is present under the brow line and above the lens.
  • On the outside raised edge of the visor are black recessed rectangular indents.
  • On each side of the lens/eyes is an open gap where the temples of the helmet connect to the tops of the flared cheek tubes.
  • Rear of helmet dome has two (2) clusters of recessed vent like details on the left and right side, sitting above the cheek tube.
    • Each cluster has four (4) vertical rectangular indents, equal in size and spacing.
  • Small, elongated indents are present on each sides/ears of the helmet.
  • The rear underside has a white neck guard extending down from the cheek tubes, which tapers away into the check tubes just forward of the temples.
    • A secondary horseshoe shaped black neck guard extends below the smaller one, wrapping beyond the endpoints of the primary neck guard, running from cheek to cheek.
  • Black vent greeblies are present at the forward ends of each cheek tube and recessed into the center nose and chin.
  • Armor is weathered to match screen used costume.
    • Screen used armor was cast in blue-grey material and that is exposed via and scratches/scuffs to armor.





Balaclava.jpg Balaclava
  • May be black or dark grey in color and conceals the entire neck/chin.
  • No hair or skin should be visible.





Chest Main.png Chest Armor
  • See the Range Trooper Chest Armor detail page.
  • Overall design is similar to the classic ESB Snowtrooper chest armor.
  • Shoulder area will be covered by duster and neck fur when worn.
    • Optional: May use shoulder strap and buckle matching Rogue One’s Mudtrooper/Shoretrooper.
  • Side edges of armor have one continuous curve, starting from the shoulder, down the lower sides to just below where diagonal channel on the right begins.
  • Lower sides of chest armor curve inward towards the wearer and align with sewn slots into the duster.
  • A narrow extension sticks out below the bottom-center edge of the chest armor, giving the appearance of a second layer of armor beneath the main chest plate.
    • Extension is equal in width in the middle, then tapers off on the ends.
  • A boxy extension on the right side (wearer’s left) features the following details:
    • Three (3) plastic/acrylic red rectangular tiles, mounted equidistantly. These are back lit similar to the plastic/acrylic red oblong shaped detail on upper left side.
    • A hose detail that curves sharply inwards, and is sewn into the slot of the duster.
      • Silver color coupling holds white-tube to chest armor.
      • Coupling has bulbous rib down center, with shallow, but raised squared off trim on outer end of coupling.
  • Lower center region of chest armor has a recessed rectangular box.
  • Chest plate mounting system is not visible externally.
  • Plate is properly scaled to fit the wearer appropriately.
  • Armor is weathered to match screen used costume.
    • Screen used armor was cast in blue-grey material and that is exposed via the scratches/scuffs to armor.





Backplate Main.png Backplate
  • Backplate is mounted on the rear of the duster, appearing sewn into the fabric.
    • Top of backplate sits in line with wearer’s shoulder blades and does not sag.
  • Backplate has two large dark grey recesses with various vent details and greeblies inside.
    • Left side has the following details:
      • A rectangular shaped greeblie with an angled right side end and the appearance of five panels.
      • A tube running from the bottom left corner, up and across the center to the right side.
      • A heat sink greeblie is situated in bottom right-hand corner.
    • Right side has the following details:
      • A thin strip in the middle, running left to right with seventeen (17) “teeth” and flat ends.
      • A panel grid consisting of seven (7) rows, three (3) columns of oblong shaped holes.
      • Lower right side has a raised circular greeblie.
  • The vent details at the top of the recesses may be cut out and backed with foam. If they are not cut out then they must be painted black between the slats.
  • Bottom left features a smaller white rectangular cut out with a raised lip; the bottom left corner is stepped.
    • The floor of this cut out is dark grey and darkened with weathering.
  • There is a raised oblong detail, and a small raised circle, positioned central and below the two large recesses.
  • Backplate is properly scaled to fit the wearer appropriately.
  • Armor is weathered to match screen used costume.
    • Screen used armor was cast in blue-grey material and that is exposed via the scratches/scuffs to armor.





Thighs Main.png Thigh Armor
  • Overall shape is mirrored for left and right, with minor differences.
  • Front-face is a large, flat panel with a raised circular detail featuring a recessed oblong oval in a horizontal orientation.
  • Inner face protrudes at an inward angle to partially wrap the wearer’s legs.
  • Lower panel extensions are narrow and angled inward, with the left having an elongated oval cut out flush with the bottom of the front face.
  • Outer face is attached perpendicular to the front face assembly and is a semi-curved panel with various details that are exactly mirrored to each other.
    • There is a wide shallow, vertical main groove that runs the entire length of the outer face.
    • A narrow groove connects to the upper portion of the main groove, which angles down toward the front face of the armor.
    • Midway down at the very bottom edge of the main groove are two (2) buckle greeblies, each contains a narrow center bar, with its flush side pointing towards the front face of the thigh armor.
    • Just above the lower buckle are two (2) small recessed details; a small rectangle with rounded corners and a small circle.
  • Extending from the main groove off the bottom of the outer-plate is an arm assembly to connect to the topside of the boots.
    • See CRL picture for clarification and understanding of details present.
      • Arm is flat, extends downward and is hinged for mobility.
      • Hinge area has large disc detail with outer raised trim; two (2) raised circular details, one on the top center and the other middle center, toward the front side of the wearer.
      • Orbiting this large disc detail is an open and thin-walled loop piece where the width increases on the wearer’s rear side. Walls of this loop piece are angled in a conical fashion.
      • Immediately below the hinge area is another buckle greeblie oriented the same as the others.
      • Lower arm piece is inset into boots and partially visible with no means of connection on the outside.
  • Thigh strap material is identical to leg loops on duster.
  • Armor is weathered to match screen used costume.
    • Screen used armor was cast in blue-grey material and that is exposed via the scratches/scuffs to armor.





Forearm Plate Main.png Forearm Plates
  • Forearm plates are distinctly different in details, but share the same overall shape and dimensions to include a shallow curvature to contour the arms.
  • Each plate is attached directly to the duster sleeves and positioned close to the sleeve’s cuff.
  • Plates appear to be “sewn” into duster sleeve with sewn edging/trim of the duster material surrounding the outsides of the plates.
  • Wearer’s right-side forearm plate has a raised surface which extends ¾ of the overall plate.
    • Raised surface has one black shallow, recessed flat circle detail.
    • Raised surface drops off sharply to the right side of the plate, giving it a “ [ ” shape, with the upper and lower arms curving down and tapering off on the sides. This shallow portion of the right side has one rectangular, dark red recessed detail toward the upper-right side.
    • Separated by a single straight horizontal gap, is a second raised surface that is plain and encompasses the remaining surface area of the forearm plate.
  • Wearer’s left-side forearm plate has two (2) significant raised surface details.
    • Upper portion has raised rectangular surface with the left and right sides having distinct “step” details. This piece appears as if it was added onto the main forearm plate, with a visible minor gap between it and the forearm plate’s body.
    • Center area is plain and sits lower than the top and bottom of the forearm plate.
    • Inner edge that runs top to bottom of the forearm plate angles inward at a 45° angle.
    • Bottom portion of the plate has a raised rectangular surface that is mostly plain, but with a narrow, recessed horizontal black rectangular detail on the lower right side.
  • Armor is weathered to match screen used costume.
    • Screen used armor was cast in blue-grey material and that is exposed via the scratches/scuffs to armor.





RT Gloves CRL Main.jpg Gloves and Handplates
  • Handplates:
    • Are rectangular, rigid, and have a shallow curve which contours the top side of each hand.
    • Extends the entirety of wearer’s hand, left to right and must sit just below to halfway over wearer’s knuckles.
    • Design of the handplates resemble features of the forearm plates and are not mirrored, but identical and rotated so the indented section is worn to the inside by the wearer’s thumbs.
      • Main body has a raised surface which drops off sharply to one side of the plate, giving it a “ [ ” shape, with the upper and lower arms curving down and tapering off on the sides. The lower, shallow area has one recessed, black oval detail on the upper-left corner (when on the wearer’s right hand).
    • Outside edge of handplate is visible, plain and squared off.
  • Armor is weathered to match screen used costume.
    • Screen used armor was cast in blue-grey material and that is exposed via the scratches/scuffs to armor.
  • Gloves:
    • Appear to be of a heavyweight material, akin to suede leather welding or mountaineering/climbing gloves.
    • Tan/off-white/grey in color via combination of original material color and weathering.
    • Extending across the upper palm is a narrow layer of white leather-like material with visible stitching.
    • Cuff must be long enough to tuck securely into duster sleeve and no skin/underlayers should be visible when worn.
  • Gloves are weathered to match screen used costume.





Duster Main alternate.png Duster
  • Duster is made of a heavyweight sheepskin fabric or similar material.
  • Appears puffy when worn; not to be form-fitting or slim on the wearer.
  • Overall duster length extends to just past the knees of the wearer, with a distinguishable gap between the bottom edge of the duster and the top of the boots.
  • Top of duster has a fur collar which extends over the wearer’s shoulders, covering the upper collar of the chest plate, wrapping around the back of the neck, and covering the upper portion of the backplate.
    • Is made of an off-white Yak fur or replica.
    • Fur strands are fairly long and stringy.
    • Portion that covers the front shoulder area is squared off whereas the rear of the collar is rounded.
    • Fur is not heavily weathered but may have very light brownish-grey tones that are either natural or appear natural.
  • Both sleeves hold the arm panels such that they appear sewn into the sleeve.
    • Fabric which butts against the arm panel is smooth/folded over for clean appearance.
    • Fur lines the inner cuff of the sleeves and protrudes out and over the wrists.
  • The wearer’s upper-left sleeve has two (2) sewn pockets, side by side, for cannister greeblies.
    • Only the cap of the cannisters is visible.
    • The cannister cap is silver with horizontal steps and one deep groove towards the top.
  • The following stitch and pattern details are on the front of the duster:
    • Bottom half of duster is open and wraps around wearer in a Kama-like fashion.
    • Front-most vertical inner and outer edge of the lower duster has three (3) distinct stitch lines running parallel.
    • Bottom edge of the duster is folded over with a single stitch.
    • Interior of “Kama” section is lined with fur.
  • The following stitch and pattern details are on the back of the duster:
    • One seam line running horizontal at waist level.
    • One seam line running vertically from the center of the waist seam.
    • On back center is a rectangular panel stitched with an “ X ”.
    • Lower duster splits vertically below the rectangular “ X ” panel.
    • The edges of the split lower duster have three (3) distinct stitch lines running vertically.
  • Duster is weathered to match screen used costume.





Pants Main.png Overalls
  • Off-white and made of a medium weight cotton-like fabric.
  • Must appear slightly baggy and not tight fitting.
  • Sewn pocket-like detail on each leg visible behind and sticking above the top of the thigh armor.
    • Pocket flap is cut such that it is pointing outward at a 45° angle.
  • Patch of a dotted textured material sewn on the front half of the legs from above the knees and extending to the mid to lower shins.
    • Textured material color matches the rest of the pants.
  • Pants are weathered appropriately to match screen used costume.





Pouches.png Pouches
  • Worn on either side of the belt buckle are large, rectangular pouches which mirror each other and are secured by belt loops on the backside.
  • Pouch flap panel covers the top face and continues over the front edge, angling upward towards the wearer’s center.
    • Flap panel is made of smooth, rigid material.
  • Main body is made of white/off-white cloth material.
  • Pouch appears full-bodied and not sagging or collapsing into itself.
  • Pouches are weathered to match screen used costume.





Cod&Belt assembly.png Abdominal Plate, Codpiece, and Belt Assembly
  • The abdominal plate, codpiece, and belt are joined as one assembly and are detailed as follows:
    • Abdominal plate:
      • The general shape of the abdominal plate is similar to that of the classic ESB Snowtrooper and joined directly to the codpiece.
      • Centered and part of the abdominal plate is a raised rectangular “buckle” with multiple raised layers.
      • Centered on the buckle is a two step flat disc with three (3) smaller raised flat discs in a triangular formation encircled by a thick raised ring.
      • Disc detail mimics classic ESB Snowtrooper abdominal plate disk greeblie.
    • Belt:
      • Belt has a stitching pattern with nine semi-raised “ribs” and made from a white/off-white cotton material fed through two vertical slots cut on either side of a centered buckle detail on the abdominal plate.
      • Belt is as wide as the front face of the buckle detail.
      • The sides of the belt feeds to the inside of the duster, method of fastening is not visible.
      • Belt does not sag or fold over under weight of pouches and is lightly weathered.
    • Codpiece:
      • The general shape of the codpiece is similar to that of the classic ESB Snowtrooper, but flatter and joined directly to the abdominal plate as one piece.
      • Codpiece sits slightly forward of wearer with a small gap.
      • Topside edge of cod where it joins the abdominal plate is raised and angles inward towards the wearer.
  • Armor is weathered appropriately to match screen used costume.
    • Screen used armor was cast in blue-grey material and that is exposed via the scratches/scuffs to armor.





Boots Main.png Boots
  • See the Range Trooper Boot detail page.
  • Boots are a flat medium grey color, made up of various components that are hinged, slide, or otherwise move when wearer walks.
    • Front shin components slide over one another when wearer is bending foot.
    • Ankle pushrods should have some light movement capability when moving.
  • Boots are properly scaled with the top of the boots sitting above the middle of the shin but below the knee.
    • Top of the front support beam extends past the top of the boots and is in-line with the bottom of the knee.
  • Boots have the following arrangement of lights with synchronized colors:
    • Both sides of each boot are pairs of vertical oblong lights which is either red or blue at same time with a translucent cover.
    • The back center of each boot heel has an inset upward-facing red or blue light with translucent cover.
    • All lights on a boot are red when stationary but change to blue when lifted.
    • Optional: Added feature of automatic alteration of light color to mimic on-screen depiction of boots when Range Trooper walks.
  • Optional: Functional feature as seen in film where a white vapor momentarily emits from rear of boots when wearer is about to lift a boot.
  • Armor is weathered appropriately to match screen used costume.
    • Screen used armor was cast in blue-grey material and exposed via scratches/scuffs to armor.
    • Advised to use photo references to gauge appropriate degrees of weathering.





Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.



RT Blaster CRL Main.jpg E-10R blaster rifle
  • Based on a modified replica Sterling sub-machine gun, scratch-built, or extensively modified commercial toy Stormtrooper blaster.
  • Similar to standard E-11, but without underfolding stock, instead has telescoping stock; mounted to butt-end of blaster.
  • Mounted SureFire 300M flashlight or similar clone.
  • Details as shown in picture, blaster is to be painted flat white with smoke-grey accents (matches color on costume armor) with medium weathering. Mounted Tank Scope has red lenses (front & back).
  • Ammo counter has red square.
