For 501st membership only the requirements in black need to be met.

In the page below, items listed in blue are recommended features that will improve the quality of the costume. Items listed in red are intended to further enhance the finished costume.

Special Notes:

  • The armor parts are gloss black and made from one of these (or similar) types of materials:
    • Fiberglass
    • ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene)
    • HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene)



This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.


TX 000 Head.jpg Head
  • Head bolt on the top and two side ear bolts.
  • Back of head has a circular indentation.
  • Eyes are red in color, with 3 LEDs in each eye at an equal set design and vertical slat coverings.




TX 000 Neck and Ring.JPG Neck Ring and Cover
  • Neck ring encircles the neck fully.
  • Overlaps at the back and fit into the head all the way around neck ring.




TX 000 Chest.jpg Torso
  • Two throat pistons are present on either side of the gear/valve.
  • A series of raised rings are present over the bell.
  • Two round bolts join the side torsos together.
  • Shoulder rings attach to the torso and encircle arms fully.
  • There are four greebles, 1 on the wearers right side and 3 on the left side.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Shoulder rings must spin on a bearing type system.
  • Shoulder bell must open on a hinge.

  • Shoulder bell is directly attached to shoulder ring.
  • Back contain a raised portion with a set of raised rectangular details and intents below.




TX 000 Ab.jpg Abdomen
  • Ribbed, rubber-like material encompasses stomach and overlaps in the back
  • Various colored wires are attached to the front and back surface of the material interwoven through each other


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Must be made of rubber
  • All wires must be gray, dark gray, or black




TX 000 Arms.jpg Biceps and Forearms
  • Hinged at the elbow
  • Inner piston running from inside center of the forearm to the inside center of the bicep
  • outer piston running from elbow of forearm to upper outside edge of the bicep
  • A Piston permanently attaches to the outside of each forearm
  • Three greeblie details, 1 on the inside and 2 on the outside, are present


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Inner and outer pistons have working articulation




TX 000 Hands.jpg Hands
  • Hand plate covers top of each hand
  • Three small stationary pistons are present on the top of the back of each hand
  • Each finger contains an armor piece with raised edges
  • Four greeblie details extend over the edge of the hand plate
  • Black glove must be worn under hand armor pieces
  • Wire decorations adorn the palm of the glove to replicate droid wiring




TX 000 Shorts.jpg Shorts
  • V-shaped shorts must fit inside the legs freely
  • Philips head bolt present on each hip




TX 000 Legs.jpg Legs
  • Each leg consists of a solid thigh piece and a hinged two-part calf
  • A piston is attached to each outer knee joint




TX 000 Feet.jpg Feet
  • May be rubber style shoes or vacuumed formed ABS shoe covers
  • Raised details are present

  • Black non-textured material, either one-piece or two-piece construction with no visible zippers or logos
