Context: Star Wars: Empire by Dark Horse Comics / Expanded Universe / Legends

The engineers of the Imperial Army are tasked with the installation, and maintenance, of the heavy weaponry and defenses used to secure Imperial encampments and fortifications. Though not unfamiliar with a blaster, these technicians are better suited to tasks involving hand tools and welding torches.


For 501st membership only the requirements listed in black need to be met.

Black text indicates a feature that is required for approval. Blue text denotes requirements for Level 2 "Specialist," but is not required for basic approval. Visit the Spec Ops website for a full description of these standards.

Special Notes:

  • Soft parts may be slightly weathered with scuffs/dirt.
  • Blasters are not required for legion membership per our weapons policy.


This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.


ID hat black.jpg Hat, Black
  • Fabric is a medium weight black suiting material.
  • Base of the hat is conical, with a crown about 4" (101mm) tall.
  • Front and rear “flaps” overlap on the sides and are about 4" (101mm) high.
  • Front bill extends 3" (76mm) down, decorated with 5, 6, or 7 concentric stitches.
  • An Imperial Code Disk may be positioned in the center of the front vertical “flap,” but is not required.

IA Engineer Jumpsuit.jpg Black Imperial Army Jumpsuit
  • One piece black coverall with a hidden front zipper and mandarin collar.
  • Each shoulder has an Imperial Army patch that sits 3" to 4" (75-100mm) inches below the shoulder seam.
  • 2 large chest pockets.
  • 2 large cargo pockets sit on the outside of the legs from around mid-thigh and not extending past bottom of the knee, with a rectangular flap covering the top of the pocket.
  • Rank bars of any kind are not permitted.
  • No pockets on sleeves or the front of the coverall leg.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Mandarin collar is closed by a chevron shaped strap across the neck.
  • A single black snap is present near the chevron point in the collar. Snap does not need to be functional.
  • Cargo pockets billow out to appear full.




Iat patch.png Imperial Army Patch
  • A shield shaped patch.
  • The patch has an Imperial cog symbol approximately 2.75" to 3" (69-76mm) in diameter.
  • The background of the patch has a more narrow shield shaped design on top of a box colored a darker shade of green.

  • Black, leather or leather-like, enclosed fingered, and non-textured.
  • Does not extend past the wrist.
  • No buckles, straps, etc.
  • May have three stitched lines or square padding on the back of the hand.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • 3 lines are present on back of hand.

  • Black colored, double strap “H” harness which travels from the lower back, and up over the shoulder.
  • Harness is made of 2" (50mm) black nylon webbing.
  • The harness system attaches to the belt.
  • Visible snap-hook style fasteners that attach to belt eyelets are acceptable.
  • Tri-glides may be present on front or back of suspenders.
  • Back of suspenders may be permanently fastened to belt, but not required.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Harness fasteners are not seen, and may be hidden behind the belt.
  • Tri-glides are present on the front suspenders for harness adjustment. Tri-glides are level with each other.

  • Belt is a 2" to 2.25" (50-57mm) wide nylon military style quick release web belt.
  • Belt is black in color.
  • Belt has grommets that run along both the top and bottom of its length.




IA Engineer Pouches.jpg Belt Pouches
  • A minimum of four small 3" to 5" (76-127mm) wide MOLLE style pouches are present.
  • Small pouches may consist of any combination of double handcuff pouches, saber radio cases, small utility pouches, or other MOLLE style pouches of similar size.
  • A minimum of one large 9" to 10" (23-25cm) wide MOLLE style pouch must be worn on the back of belt.
  • Large pouch may be a utility pouch, gas mask pouch, SAW pouch, or other MOLLE style pouch of similar size.
  • Pouches with zippers shall have the zippers covered or concealed either with a matching fabric or tight weave webbing.
  • Zipper pulls are either removed or hidden from view.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Small pouches will make use of a visible single snap closure or appear to have such.
  • Large pouches will make use of a visible double snap closure or appear to have such.

  • "Commuter" or similar style boot 8 to 9" (20-23cm) in height.
  • Calf high boots such as "jackboots" or "kersey" style are not acceptable.
  • Black leather or leather like material.
  • Free of laces, decorative stitching, buckles or any other embellishments.
  • Normal leather grain/texture/lines are acceptable.
  • Tread on the soles and heels is acceptable
  • Zippers on the inside of the boot are acceptable, so long as they are concealed. If not covered by leather or vinyl, zippers are painted black.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Pants legs shall be tucked into boots and fluffed to give appearance of original source art.
  • Weathering of boots is encouraged.





Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.

  • Simple round wielding googles with dark lenses and black frames may be present on head, around neck, or hanging from the belt.




ROTJ Belt.jpg TK Ammo Belt
  • Belt face is made of white plastic (TK ammo belt).
  • The soft belt proper is made of canvas, or material with a canvas covering. Size must be 2.75” to 3.25” (70-83mm) wide and not wider than the plastic portion of the belt.
  • The color is be white to off-white.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • ROTJ style TK ammo belt.
  • No buttons are present on belt.
  • Drop boxes shall be ANH Stormtrooper size, not ROTJ stormtrooper size.

  • Based on a real or replica Sterling sub-machine gun, scratch-built, or a modified commercial toy Stormtrooper blaster.
