Context: Star Wars: Andor (TV Series)

The troopers of the Imperial Army were sent to the Imperial occupied planet of Aldhani. Their main duty was guarding the Imperial base at Nasma Klain as well as the Alkenzi Airbase from any threats local and foreign.


For 501st membership only the requirements listed in black need to be met.

Black text indicates a feature that is required for approval. Blue text denotes requirements for Level 2 “Specialist,” but is not required for basic approval. Visit the Spec Ops website for a full description of these standards.

Special Notes:

  • The armor parts are a very dark grey shade, or as specified in each part description, and made from one of these (or similar) types of materials:
    • Fiberglass.
    • ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene).
    • HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene).
    • PLA, ABS, PETG (3D Printing)
    • Polyurethane Rubber
  • 3D Printed parts are permitted but all print lines and other artifacts must be removed.
  • Blasters are not required for legion membership per our weapons policy.

This Visual Guide has been reviewed by the detachment staff and the LMO team and is certified for use as a minimum approval guideline for GMLs. GMLs are free to approve this costume type.


  • This document is not intended to be a detailed how-to on costume construction; rather a visual guide to be used for 501st costume approval. Details on construction may be found on the respective costume detachment web forum.
  • GMLs uncertain about an aspect of submitted costume shall post questions in the appropriate DL/GML peer review section of the Legion forum.
  • Measurements given in this document are intended to be approximate and generalized; not criteria for approval.
  • Requirements for all 501st costumes are proportional to the wearer in scale, fit and size.
  • Text descriptions are only one part of the guideline. GMLs and costumers must consider both text and pictures (CRL and Reference) when reviewing the costume.


Required Costume Components

The following costume components are present and appear as described below.

  • Fabric matches the tunic and pants.
  • Base of the hat is conical, with a crown about 4" (101.6mm) tall.
  • Front and rear “flaps” overlap on the sides and are about 4" (101.6mm) high.
  • Front bill extends 3" (76mm) down, decorated with (5), (6), (7) or (8) concentric stitches.
  • An Imperial Code Disk is positioned in the center of the front vertical “flap”.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Disks do not feature a notch or groove details.

  • A long-sleeved, olive green jacket that falls just to mid-thigh, with no visible zippers or buttons.
  • Fabric has a denim textured material with a visible weave.
  • Has a high mandarin style collar with a left over right closure that rises from the front of the tunic.
  • The front closure overlaps left over right and rises from the hem at the bottom of the tunic to the top of the collar.
  • Four rectangular pockets are present on the jacket front, covered by large flapped closures. Lower pockets are larger than the ones on the upper chest. Lower pocket seams rest on the same seam as the end of the tunic
  • The rear of the jacket has a horizontal seam present near the upper back. Two vertical seams start below the horizontal upper back seam moving down the bottom of the jacket.
  • Two black tunic hooks to hold the belt in place are permitted. If used, the hooks will pass from the inside of the tunic to the outside through holes on either side of the tunic at the hip. The belt covers the holes.
  • One pocket is present on each arm of the jacket, each covered by large flapped closures.
  • The top of the arm pocket flaps are in line with the top edge of the chest pockets.
  • Above the left arm pocket flap, up to 2 black fabric rank bars may be present.
  • Cuffs on the sleeves are about mid-distance to the elbow. The material folds back on itself to form the cuff.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • If left arm rank bars are present, the black fabric should be similar to duvetyn type of fabric and will have 3 equidistant horizontal stitch lines through each rank bar.
  • The front jacket flap will have rectangular stitch marks with a stitched X inside where the Velcro is attached to keep the flap closed.

  • Chest armor matches visual references being accurate in shape and design.
  • There is an indented area around the outer edge of the center flat section.
  • Buckles attach to upper chest plate. Buckles are gunmetal or silver with black recesses.
  • Shoulder straps are affixed to the chest plate at the buckle. The shoulder strap is black. It is permitted to be made of cast flexible urethane or other flexible material.
  • To the lower left side of the center flat panel is a recessed area angled inward from bottom to top with a raised rectangle greeblie and a recessed horizontal elongated oval. The elongated oval is painted Humbrol Eed #19, or equivalent. The raised rectangle greeblie is painted silver or light grey.
  • Left of the recessed area is a raised square that extends from the center to the curved side of the armor. A white or silver rectangle is present on this raised square.
  • On the top left side of the raised area is a raised oblong detail that protrudes outwards.
  • Chest shall be painted a very dark grey. Greenish undertones in certain lighting conditions is acceptable. An acceptable range of colors include RLM 70 to Sherwin Williams SW6994 Greenblack, or equivalent.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Buckles have black recess on upper narrow section and the lower recess shall expose the chest armor.
  • Buckles may have silver paint chipping showing gunmetal underneath the silver.

  • Back plate is painted to match the chest armor and helmet.
  • Back plate has a collar that extends upwards and tapers to the chest plate.
  • Chest and back plate meet at the sides.
  • The backplate features painted details that vary from trooper to trooper. Acceptable colors for these details are either silver or gunmetal, but one color must be chosen. Mix and match of the detail items is not permitted.
  • There are 2 hose connectors located at the top of the back plate approximately centered above each rectangular cut out/greeblie. Hose connecters are painted to match the strap raised slot, strap buckle, and recessed box color.
  • Back has two large cut out recesses with vent details and greeblies inside, all painted silver or gunmetal. The silver or gunmetal paint does not leave the edge of the box opening.
  • The vents at the top of the boxes may have the openings darkened with weathering.
  • Four raised bars approximately .375" (10mm) long aligned to the top of the recessed box opening may be present.
  • Each recess has different and specific set of boxes inside that are painted to match the recessed box color. Light weathering is permitted.
  • Bottom left features a smaller rectangle cut out with the left side stepped.
  • Half circle indent detail beneath the backpack section must be present.
  • There is a long thin raised greeblie positioned central and below the 2 large recesses.
  • There is a small raised circle greeblie positioned central and below the above named greeblie.
  • There is a raised slot on each shoulder for the straps to fit into. The raised slots are painted either silver or gunmetal grey.
  • Shoulder straps are black and are affixed to the chest plate at the buckle. The chest buckle shall match the raised slot color.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • The hose fittings are angled forward.
  • There is a recessed hole approximately .31" (7.8mm) above the top left corner of the left recessed box.
  • There are two indented squares approximately 1⁄4" x 1⁄4" (5mm x 5mm) aligned vertically above the right upper corner of the left recessed box.
  • There is a raised step on the bottom of the main back box.

  • Each shoulder bell is a mirror image of the other.
  • The detailing of each shoulder bell is asymmetrical.
  • Shoulders should have a longer flat edge that covers top of bicep with a shorter flat edge that connects to chest armor.
  • Shallow grooves are present in a pattern matching the photo.
  • Shoulders are painted to match the armor and helmet.
  • Shoulders are mounted to the shoulder strap via a bracket and 1" (25.4mm) or 1.25" (40mm) webbing strap.
  • Optional rank stripes located on the left shoulder may be present. The stripes are painted on. The white stripe is approximately 1" (25mm" wide bordered by a black stripe approximately 5⁄16" (6.5mm) wide. The stripes may be semi gloss to gloss in color.

  • Bicep cover strips are raised and beveled with an added strip layer on top.
  • Biceps are painted to match the armor and helmet.

  • Black gloves made of smooth leather or leather-like material.
  • Gloves shall have all logos removed.
  • There is no decorative stitching on the gloves.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Gloves shall have a U-shaped adjustment at the wrist.
  • Dents brand gloves or accurate replica of Dents gloves.

  • The belt is constructed from a non-textured leather or leather-like material.
  • Approximately 2" (50.8 mm) in width, up to 3" (76.2 mm) is acceptable.
  • There are no loops on the belt.
  • A single large snap or rivet is visible approximately 1" (25.4 mm) to the wearers left from the buckle.
  • The buckle is constructed from a horizontally brushed metal, or metal looking material.
  • The buckle size is approximately 2 5⁄8" (66.7 mm) high and 4 1⁄8" (104.5 mm) wide with 0.5" (12.7 mm) radius rounded corners.
  • Buckle is adorned with a Rogue One type Code Disk without grooves at the center. The belt is worn above the top of the lower pocket flap top edge.
  • The belt features two boxes, one on either side of the buckle.
  • The boxes are Rogue One style boxes, the dimensions are approximately 3" (76.2mm) tall x 2" (50.8mm) wide, x 1" (25.4mm) thick.
  • Boxes shall be painted olive grey or gunmetal with a flat finish.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Belt is made of leather.
  • Belt has a groove at top and bottom edge of the belt along its length.
  • Belt boxes are smaller than Rogue One boxes, being 2.5" (67mm) tall x 1.75" wide (45mm) x 1" (25.4mm) thick.
  • Belt boxes feature a pill shaped indentation at the top of the box.

  • Olive green pants matching the tunic and hat.
  • Fabric is a denim textured material with a visible weave.
  • There are no visible pockets.
  • Trousers feature a long reinforcement panel on the front of the leg from mid-thigh to below the knee. This panel is double row stitched. It does not extend to the side seams of the trouser leg.

  • Calf high black leather or leather like material.
  • Free of laces, decorative stitching, buckles on the instep or any other embellishments.
  • If seams are present on the shaft, they are at the rear only.
  • Boots may have a single adjustment strap at the top outside of the boot, with the buckle no wider than 1" (25.4mm).
  • This need not be functional.
  • Jackboot buckles should not be shiny/can be painted dingy grey or gun-metal color.
  • Zippers on the inside of the boot are acceptable, so long as they are concealed.
  • If the zipper is not covered by vinyl/ leather, it is painted black.
  • German “jack boot” style boots are most canon.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Boots are made of leather.




Optional Accessories

Items below are optional costume accessories. These items are not required for approval, but if present appear as described below. If adding in an accessory after initial approval, the item still needs to be submitted to local GML for approval before use.

  • Based on a real or replica Sterling sub-machine gun, scratch-built, cast, 3D print or a modified commercial toy Stormtrooper blaster.
  • The magazine is longer than Original Trilogy blasters.
  • Power Cylinders shall be mounted on top of the magazine well. R1 style power cylinders are preferred over ANH style.
  • A sliding stock is mounted on the endcap of the Blaster. The retractable feature need not function.
  • A Sling may be attached on one or two points of the Blaster.


OPTIONAL Level two certification (if applicable):
  • Blaster shall be based on a real or replica S&T Sterling L2A1 AEG Airsoft Gun. (Folding Stock does not need to function) If an Airsoft Sterling is used, it must not function.
  • Grip assembly and blaster dimensions are based on an S&T Airsoft sterling.
  • The recessed strip behind the bolt may be hollow, filled or partially filled.
  • Scope shall be a real or replica M.H.R. (Minneapolis Honeywell Regulator Co.) 1943 model M38 Telescope.
  • Counter shall be a real or replica Hengstler 400 Series counter with small eagle logo. Large eagle logo is not allowed.
  • A grille shaped detail piece is attached on top of the Magazine. It features 8 slots.
  • 6 rows of T-Tracks cover the Sterling receiver holes except for the lower left row with the bayonet lug.
  • A sling swivel may be fitted near the muzzle, on the same lower left row as the bayonet lug.
  • A 3-Slot Picatinny rail is fitted on the row above the bayonet lug. The rail is affixed with two screws. The screws do not interfere with the rail slots.
  • A sling swivel is fitted underneath the stock extension.
  • If a sling is attached, it is made of webbing and uses snap hook buckles. The sling is attached to the swivel underneath the stock.
  • The stock is modelled after a 416C pattern. The buttplate on the stock is smooth and has a pill shaped greeblie with three holes. Two of the holes are circular, the central is rectangular.
  • The buttstock matches the size and shape of those seen on screen, being shorter overall than other Rogue One era buttstocks. The stock has the appearance of being two pieces joined together.
