🌎 Global Wetland Watch Updates 🛰 Forested wetlands, also known as swamps, are a type of inland palustrine wetland dominated by trees and characterised by the presence of standing water or saturated soil. Forested wetlands are biological hotspots, home to many endemic species, and play a crucial role in supporting surrounding ecosystems. They provide habitats for species such as river dolphins, giant otters, pirarucu, armadillos, anteaters, tapirs and jaguars.🐬 Beyond their rich biodiversity, these wetlands offer flood and erosion control, serve as transportation corridors and produce opportunities for fishing and tourism.🐟  Due to the dense canopy cover, detecting these wetlands and differentiating them from other forests using satellite imagery can be challenging. But in a pilot project from the Amazon Basin in Colombia, Global Wetland Watch has demonstrated that synthetic aperture radar (SAR) sensors can penetrate through the vegetation canopy and detect the seasonal 'flood pulses' in the swamps. 🛰 👉 You can learn more about the pilot project and the importance of wetlands here: https://lnkd.in/gWmGZ8ba The Global Wetland Watch is an alliance between DHI, UNEP DHI Partnership - Centre on Water and Environment and UN Environment Programme made possible with a grant from Google.org. #ForNature #ClimateAction #GlobalWetlandWatch #EO #Satellites

Last week, we shared behind-the-scenes of DHI’s biologists onsite during one of the environmental surveys for the Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link. Now, let’s have a look at the monitoring stations and equipment that collect data on the water environment. Several buoys with monitoring equipment continuously gather water data near the project areas and along the coasts of Fehmarn and Lolland. These monitor the sediment content in the water, current speeds, wave heights and more. Specialised surveyors regularly go out to clean and maintain the equipment to make sure the instruments work properly and to safeguard the moorings and markers. Environmental data from the instruments, including data gathered during violent storms and high waves during fall/winter, are sent online and accessible on Femern A/S’ open access portal ÆGIR: https://lnkd.in/efmD8f63 📸 1 and 2: Environmental monitoring stations in the water off the coasts of Fehmarn and Lolland collecting data on the water environment. 📸 3: Specialist surveyors from DHI regularly clean and maintain the buoys. This buoy is monitoring the currents and waves. 📸 4: Plants and fauna gather and grow on the equipment. These instruments have small wipers to keep them clean, but nevertheless need regular cleaning. 📸 5: A clean and serviced instrument for measuring the water sediments is ready to go in the water again. 𝐂𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐮𝐬 𝐡𝐨𝐰 𝐰𝐞 𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐧𝐬𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦 𝐜𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐲? 𝐒𝐞𝐞 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐩 𝐢𝐧 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧! When we say we prioritise the user experience, we truly mean it! DHI's ecosystem of digital solutions and cross-cutting infrastructure is constantly evolving. A key focus for our User Research & UX Design team is to enhance user experiences every step of the way. An effective approach we use is through internal workshops, such as an earlier in-person session on MIKE Cloud at our HQ in Denmark. With its various touchpoints—including multiple applications, cloud simulations, IT infrastructure and of course our clients— it’s important that we continue to identify improvement opportunities for MIKE Cloud. Workshops like these highlight that UX design goes beyond the visual design of buttons and icons. It encompasses the entire customer journey and considers critical elements like login and payment processes. At its core, UX design ensures that every interaction with our services is seamless and intuitive, ultimately enhancing the overall customer experience. How do you work with User Research and UX design in your company? Share your insights with us! To know more about UX in DHI, link up with Marie Svane Rizk Vestergaard, Eva Henkel, Felix Tollan and Anna Katrine Høgh Andersen! #UX #UI #userexperience #userdesign

The Fehmarnbelt Fixed Link will be the world’s longest immersed tunnel once completed. DHI has been involved in the project since 1997 – from doing pre-investigations to EIA work and to being environmental consultants for Femern A/S starting 2014, assisting in managing hydrography, sediments and marine biology. At this time of the year, we are busy with the yearly floral and fauna monitoring campaigns. Not only is marine life at the seabed monitored, but the seabed sediments itself are also scrutinised to track changes in its characteristics and hence living conditions for plants and animals during the dredging phase. Our divers were out four times in 2023 and have just completed the benthic flora-focused and diver-based monitoring for 2024 with four more campaigns planned this year, to collect biological samples for benthic fauna and biodiversity monitoring and to analyse the layering and the grain size composition of the upper seabed material. In today's #DHIPeople, we chat with Mark Bailes, who just celebrated his 10th year at DHI. Outside of work, Mark is a qualified cycling guide! Get to know him 👇🏻👇🏻 𝙌: 𝑯𝒊 𝑴𝒂𝒓𝒌! 𝑪𝒐𝒏𝒈𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏𝒔 𝒐𝒏 𝒓𝒆𝒄𝒆𝒏𝒕𝒍𝒚 𝒄𝒆𝒍𝒆𝒃𝒓𝒂𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 10𝒕𝒉 𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒔𝒂𝒓𝒚 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝑫𝑯𝑰. 𝑷𝒍𝒆𝒂𝒔𝒆 𝒕𝒆𝒍𝒍 𝒖𝒔 𝒂 𝒃𝒊𝒕 𝒂𝒃𝒐𝒖𝒕 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒓𝒐𝒍𝒆 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒉𝒐𝒘 𝒚𝒐𝒖𝒓 𝒋𝒐𝒖𝒓𝒏𝒆𝒚 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒑𝒂𝒏𝒚 𝒉𝒂𝒔 𝒆𝒗𝒐𝒍𝒗𝒆𝒅 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒑𝒂𝒔𝒕 𝒅𝒆𝒄𝒂𝒅𝒆? Throughout my 10 years at DHI, I have been involved in sales and support of the MIKE software to clients in the United Kingdom and Ireland. My MIKE clients include Engineering Consultants, Environmental regulators, Water companies & Aquaculture companies – so a full spectrum of the MIKE software user base.   I have always been client-facing and speaking to MIKE clients every single day keeps me grounded and reminds me the client should be the focus of everything we do. My MIKE clients ask tough questions and they demand high quality answers to in a timely manner. Providing that support is crucial to securing future MIKE revenue (Service and Maintenance Agreement renewals or new/additional Subscriptions). My role today is to function as the first point of contact for all the UK & Ireland MIKE users. 𝙌: 𝑨 𝒔𝒂𝒍𝒆𝒔 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒔𝒖𝒑𝒑𝒐𝒓𝒕 𝒓𝒐𝒍𝒆 𝒐𝒇𝒕𝒆𝒏 𝒄𝒐𝒎𝒆𝒔 𝒘𝒊𝒕𝒉 𝒊𝒕𝒔 𝒔𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒍𝒍𝒆𝒏𝒈𝒆𝒔. For example, their MIKE model might not be working as they expect and they come to DHI wanting our advice. Typically, I will ask a MIKE client to share their model setup and a detailed description of the behaviour they observe. My first job is to try to replicate the behaviour they describe in the current version of the software. If the issue arises because of the model setup then we can provide help and suggestions on how to do things better. If the issue arises because of a software bug then a change to the software will be required.   Support cases often act as an opportunity for me to identify a need to improve a workflow or to add a missing feature to the software. In these cases, I provide feedback to the Product Owners to consider implementation in a future MIKE release. In the case where the client reported an issue (or we identify the workflow could be better), there is a great sense of satisfaction when I can go back to the client at later date and advise them the issue is now resolved or that a new feature has been added to the software.
