Gunter was developed greatly in the middle of the 19th century on pleasure craft (raced on the Seine). Not aware of any RS that says that it is used in lifeboats. Advantages of unstepped mast fitting inside hull - why not state the points made in the cited source? "Most modern used in pleasure craft" - and most historic uses too! undo

  • curprev 19:5319:53, 17 April 2020ThoughtIdRetired talk contribs 7,071 bytes −52 The whole point of gunter rig is that you do not need a particularly tall mast. Its is quite usual to set a jib with a gunter mainsail, so what is the significance of the mast placement: it is entirely normal. undo
  • curprev 18:3318:33, 17 April 2020ThoughtIdRetired talk contribs 7,123 bytes −133 The use of the word "gunter" as a name for an actual item (spar, wire strop or whatever) has appeared before in this article - but has never been supported by a reference. A search of authoritative sources does not support a "gunter" being any material object, it seems simply to be the name of the rig. undo
